is this place still open to buy frozen shrimp? I've seen posts about it for a long time, but have yet to stop. Would like to know so this trip down it can be added to my list. Thanks.

I've bought my shrimp there for a couple of years, but wow, the prices are really getting high. Anyone know what the big shrimp go for at the shrimp market these days. I've never had a bad shrimp from Jesse's. Maybe it's time to go back.

Thanks Jim! Looks like the place by Burger King is still a better deal considering the quality of the shrimp. Boy it's good and tastes so fresh! Going down there in a couple hours to get 5 boxes of U-15.

If you pay with pesos it is even a better price as they are only offering 12.22 peso/dollar.

We stopped on our way out Monday morning - they were out of the U-10 blues, but I did get a 2 Kilo block of the U-12 blues for $48 usd. comes out to just under $11/lb - they look great!
fwiw, I did buy 5 kilos of U-12's from the fish guy who drives into PDO most mornings, I think is name is Armando. I asked for them to be cleaned and de-veined, no shells at all on the tips either. He said to give him til about noon so he could go back to his guy and get that prepared, and he came back about 11:40 - 11 separate bags of cleaned blues. I gave him $100 - about 9/lb. we boiled those up that afternoon and I have to say - they were awesome! what we didn't eat with garlic butter, we ate Sunday cold with cocktail sauce I made while we watched football - yummy!

Leigh,
I'll check the box, but it had better be 2K for $48, or I got hosed. He had some fresh blues too, which I thought was a bit odd - are there some local shrimpers who bring in fresh shrimp without freezing it? I have heard of this, but didn't expect to see it at this place.

I got some of those fresh blues. Had no shrimp smell whatsoever. The were so big I had to fold them in half to put them on the skewers. Wrapped in bacon with a slice of chili, grilled them while drinking a cold cerveza. Heaven on earth!

I don't think so. Not on the menu board I attached above. Most of what they carry is flash frozen. They explained that they freeze their products much colder than most home freezers will. Said the ice I asked for would cause the fish I bought to thaw as the fish was much colder than ice. o_O

Temperature is the most important factor controlling the rate at which fish go bad. For example, cod will remain edible for up to 15 days at 0°C, the temperature of melting ice, whereas it may be unfit to eat after only six days at 5°C. White fish frozen quickly and then stored at a controlled temperature of - 30°C will keep in good condition for nine months or more; the same fish kept at a temperature of - 10°C will not remain in good condition for much longer than a month.
