If you remember LJ, Rosy, now owner of Rosy's Donut's Restaurant, was a waitress there forever. It was a faulty propane tank that caused the explosion, since it was near the time of 9/11 the FBI also showed up to investigate, because of the U.S. tourist trade in Penasco.

I loaned the trailer to a friend of mine that weekend who said the explosion knocked him out of bed and this was Playa Miramar RV Park....Oh, all the Frida Kahlo paintings that burned up with the restaurant. So many dollars worth of history. So many good times and food... Does anybody remember the Chateaubriand they used to bring out on a big raised crystal platter. They sat it in the middle of the table and everyone served themselves.... Now I am gonna cry...

The blown up and burned cars sat there forever, i thought they were never gonna clean the place up. When they reopened, down the street, it was never the same.

They had all men and then let the Mayan Palace sales team, have the run of the place, great just what I needed, while I am eating. i think we only went twice also.

My son and I stayed at the hotel shortly before the explosion. It was terribly run down at that time, filthy dirty, crappy furniture. I thinkwe were the only people in the whole place. When I heard about the explosion it really startled me and thought it might have been their solution to a run down old hotel on the skids. We were very fortunate and hopefully there was no one in the hotel at the time. I never heard if anyone was there.

Cause of the explosion was a BLEVE from flame impingement on the tank. Once the tank ruptured it went like a missile into the hotel second floor. I ate their a few times giving it a chance each time and never cared for the quality of the food. Restaurant always had a sewer smell, or was that propane? Service was so so.

Roberto, there were some people there. No deaths that I heard of in the hotel. It sat like that for so long because of the Insurance claims to be settled.

Kitchen explosion hurts 16 in Mexico

Four Americans are among the injured when a propane tank explodes at the Costa Brava hotel in Rocky Point. Foul play is not suspected.

An estimated 16 people, including four Americans, were injured when a propane tank exploded in a kitchen at a Rocky Point hotel.
The cause of Tuesday afternoon’s explosion was not known yesterday. No foul play was suspected by authorities.
The Americans injured include 92-year-old Rose Simon, from Sedona, who was thrown to the floor in her hotel room by the blast, said Norberto Guzman, director of Clinica San Jose, a full-service emergency hospital in Rocky Point.
He said she has fractures in her hands, which she used to help break her fall, and bruises on her chest.
Guzman said 16 were hurt when the propane tank exploded in the kitchen of the Costa Brava hotel.
Earlier, it was believed 15 were hurt. According to a Rocky Point Web site, the hotel is about 20 years old.
A family from Utah, David Coyner, 39; Penny Coyner, 38, his wife; and their 5-year-old daughter, Kathelina, had first- and second-degree burns from the fire.
Guzman said the family was eating in the restaurant when the tank exploded.
Sarah Harper, spokeswoman for Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, said the Coyners were admitted to the hospital’s burn center. Their conditions could not be determined last night.
Simon was treated in Clinica San Jose on Tuesday night, Guzman said, so her condition could be stabilized and arrangements made to move her to an Arizona hospital.
It could not be determined last night where she was taken, but Guzman said she left the Rocky Point hospital yesterday morning.
Five workers were seriously hurt in the incident and taken to a hospital in Mexicali.
Puerto Peñasco police officer Jorge Castañeda, who was at the scene, said it was the largest disaster he had ever seen.
He said he has been a police officer in the booming town of 45,000 for nearly three years.
Guzman said fully outfitted acute-care ambulances took the injured to the Arizona border, where they were taken by air to hospitals.
Puerto Peñasco, the popular town in Sonora called Rocky Point, is a year-round weekend destination for Tucsonans and was filled with college students during spring break just two weeks ago.
Arizona Republic reporter Hernàn Rozemberg contributed to this report.
