    Fishing Posters

This poster is not accurate. The totuava and white sea bass are mixed up. Groupers are anything but slow growing and long lived-that would be black sea bass!

    The Last Vaquita?

Jim you are right on with your understanding of how the ocean reclaims all this stuff. The "parking lot" bottom is by far, in my opinion, the most devastating situation to the eco-system in the upper SOC.

    Grouper Problems

Typically phytoplankton is a good thing-heathly ecosystem?

    Grouper Problems

Floating grouper is not a good sign.. Typically floating groupers are fish released from a fisherman (not many fishermen release groupers) after being caught at depth. Populations of gulf grouper, leopard grouper, red snapper, and white sea bass are in my opinion way down, trigger fish seem to...

    Sea of Cortez Fish Populations

Just talked to Tom Alber who fishes Lobos every other weekend-he said last weekend he just quit fishing-only thing they caught over three days was trigger! He said the shell divers take is way down too. I haven't fished much this year but it has really been lousy compared to other years for...

    Sea of Cortez Fish Populations

We recently returned from an annual trip to Isla La Guardia. Lots of us were diving and lots of us were fishing. We saw fish, we caught fish but nothing like it has been in the past. Puerto Lobos has been good for small yellowtail, and some nice gold spots but the quality fish are rare now...

    Rocky Pt. Fishing 5-11-14

Captain Ralph took us back out to his snapper spot at the 43. Another beautiful, calm day, lots of whales, blue, blue water, and sweaty hot!!! We had to use diamond jigs as we could not catch any live mackerel for bait, but still had a great day. Nice triple hookup on big reds. Chuck caught...

    Rocky Pt. Fishing 5-3-2014

Thx Robert. Glad CJ was along to take pictures. Yes it has been a strange season so far, just part of the allure to the beautiful SOC.

    Rocky Pt. Fishing 5-3-2014

There has been some question as to the identification of that fish-sawtail or broom-tail. Pictures have been sent to a fish expert for confirmation. We were out at the 43 mile reef.

    Boating Safety/Communications

I agree with Stu-VHF, cell phone, travel with others and let people know your plans and good maintainence is your best bet. I had the Spot and a satellite phone but they were both a pain. There is pretty much always someone within radio contact, the cell towers are strung out along the coast...

    Rocky Pt. Fishing 5-3-2014

Perfect weather and great fishing action aboard Ralph's big comfortable ProCat with my wife CJ and Capones Dave . We found a hole with some big healthy red snappers, 15 to 20 pounders! Dave served an awesome platter of snapper collars last night at the restaurant while the Mayweather boxing...
