Rick Hammer's Trick for Rocked Up Groupers

Art Pina and I were hanging out at Safe Marina last Saturday morning trying to wait out the wind so that we could go fishing. It turned out that the wind beat us that day, but it was still a pleasant morning. Rick Hammer stopped by to say hello and we had a great conversation about fishing for big grouper. I didn’t know it, but Rick was friends with Wally Schmerfeld who wrote the book "The Secrets of Super Grouper". Rick told us something that Wally had taught him that I found fascinating. Wally had a trick for getting rocked up groupers out of their caves that involved sliding a gizmo down the line to “bonk” the grouper on the head. Wally’s gizmo was a ten penny nail pounded through a round flat lead sinker and sharpened on both ends. The sinker was then tied to a loop of heavy mono or wire. If he hooked a grouper and it got stuck in the rocks, Wally would put the gizmo around the line and let it slide down the line to spook the grouper out of the cave. Rick says it works, so I plan to give it a try someday. Amazing!

Rick’s a great guy. The very first time that I ever tangled with a big grouper was on Rick’s old super panga back in 2003 with my buddy Ryan Jenkins. We were tired of catching triggerfish and spotted bass. Back then Rick was the only captain that we knew that would take us out far enough to catch grouper. Ryan and I had caught a few bigmouth leatherjacks (pomano) from shore the day before for bait and we had our 4/0 Penn reels spooled with 40# mono. Rick had brought us to the 14 mile reef and was watching the sonar and working the boat along the drop off. When Rick told us to drop, Ryan and I let our pompanos sink to the bottom and we were both instantly hooked up and broken off by big fish. We didn’t catch a big one that day, but we learned that 40# mono is like cotton candy to big groupers and we were hooked for life.

100 lb.PowerPro Spectra is like cotton candy to grouper! Unbelievably, I had one snap 250 lb. test Spectra this summer. Snapped the rod in half, too. The top half of the rod is now pinned to the wall in my office with a small tag that says "Fish - 1, Stuart - 0"

Anytime we grouper fish, I always feel lucky if we can get one out of every 3 we hook into the boat. Neat trick about bonking them in the head. Not sure I'd be able to use that trick with the live bait leaders I make for grouper. Should work with a scampi setup, though.

Assuming we make them the same Stuart, It would be a little difficult for it to get past a 3 way swivel.

Back in the day, I used to hang out with Wally and Rojo of an evening and drink beer until we were so full that we'd switch to rum and talk about fishing. Never had the pleasure of fishing with Wally but he sure had some great stories. Too bad I was always too drunk to remember. Rick Hammer is a great guy and very knowledgeable along with Ric Felder they know a lot of Wally's secrets.

Dan... Old wally was one of the first people we met when we moved to Rocky Point, we used to see him at La Curva all the time... and when we were partners on the old Island Explorer with Margaritavilla I used to see Rojo and his Capt. Ken, down at the docks all the time... and Rick Hammer is one of my best friends you may have seen him in one or two of my videos... I haven't met Ric Felder yet but maybe some day... although we are friends on YouTube...

thanks everyone for your support. wally adopted me back when i first met him. he never gave me to much info at once . he made me work for it . he always told me you have to hunt for big fish . it is sad to me that my best years grouper fishing were after he was gone. i helped wally go out to sea one last time with his family, ashes to ashes he is out there looking after me. i miss him like everyone that knew him, peace and chicken grease!

scott, i had 3 customers that flew in from nebraska to fish with me . we tried 2 days in a row but even with a million dollars worth of boat it was just to big to fish . we did catch bait at the pitaya reef right around the corner and that was fun but out of nowhere the wind got us as we tried to get out and we headed home in some nasty trailing waves. should have named this place windy point not rocky point. maybe manana

Great tip, Thanks! We spoke of carrying scuba gear with us for rocked up groupers, but that would be a lot easier and no depth restrictions.

Got a story/tip for you guys.

One of my fishing buddies was taught a unique trick by an Inuit Eskimo in AK. This old man would go halibut fishing in an old row boat. He had inexpensive fishing gear, zebco rods and reels. He fished for halibut. He was taught by his Father that one could put halibut to sleep by tapping on the rod with the back of your knife. So, Bob was taught by his surrogate Grandfather to tap rapidly on the back of fishing rod to put these giants to sleep, and they could easily brought up from the depths. BTW, Bob started fishing with his surrogate grandfather when he was 6 and fished with him every summer for 5 years. Bob has an old black and white photo of himself and his grandfather standing next to a huge halibut. Bob is holding what appears to be an old zebco rod/reel and is all smiles. From what I remember that halibut was marked at 108 #s'. He said these fish wouldn't struggle, you could just crank 'em up, and then shoot 'im with a .22 before you brought them aboard.
I've yet to try this on a rocked grouper (always seem to forget), but maybe one of you fellas can give it a go.

THIS IS SO EPIC!!! SHAWNO!! Time to pass on the lineage my man! I need LOCAL KNOWLEDGE!!! Is Rick Hammer still port captain of Lake Pleasant Harbor or Scorpion Bay I can't remember which one it was... That guy is hilarious!! Man! This old thread has me smiling my ears off right now. Back in 2011, 2012 right after I became handicap I was driving down to RP once or twice a month by myself to go kayak fishing. Every night I would go to the Boo Bar and wait for the regulars to come in. That dude was always so cool. He'd come over and ask if I got anything and we'd start bullshitting about fishing and I'd start picking his brain for information. Not too long after that is when he left Rocky Point for a new life I guess. I think I'm still friends with him on FB... I should reach out and see if he remembers me. Maybe he'd be willing to give me some good started MARKS.

HEY RICK ---- SABOR COMPLETO!!!! jajajajaja

Whatever happened to Ric Feld????? He learned everything he knew from Lucky Chucky (self admittedly)... I'd love to do a fishing education lineage tree... Chuck Blair influenced a lot of Cholla Bay fishermen for a lot of years. He told stories of taking Ric Feld out when he was young and now a lot of you from this era are getting older. Crazy how that works. Information passed down to the next worthy individual. I'm ready to take the torch!!! Just reading this post from Shawno is amazing. 2003 he's talking about being fed up catching in shore fish... LOL wow!! I guess that's how it starts for us all.

How can I learn more about crazy charlie?
Very little written about him that I know of, mostly just word of mouth anecdotes from those that fished with him or knew him around Cholla. He had a lot of Grouper tricks and knew the reefs very well.

Sad that I can't ask Chuck about him now. Chuck's dad to my understanding was the founder or one of two founders of the Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club. Chucks dad built most of the Cholla Bay boats in the 50's to my understanding. All wood. Just the photos from back then of Totoaba they were catching is absolutely insane to think there were abundant SeaTrout that were regularly 60+ pounds???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I scoured the internet for The Secrets of Super Grouper and can't find anything. I see it reference here and there but nothing. I even searched Ebay to see if there were any old copies floating around. Nope!

Call Gowdy down at Phoenix Fishing Supply and see if he has it. He used to stock it, it's where I got my copy years ago. If I can find mine, I'll let you borrow it.

Good to know. I will stop in there to ask. He gave me a free hat a couple of months ago and we lost it at the lake yesterday so I need to go there regardless to buy another one.

I love how he rings you up at the register. He asks, how much are these again??? I'm like I think they are $2/per... Ok so you have 6 so that's $12, let's call it $10.... and that trolling plug is $20, let's call it $17.50... LOL

Every time I'm in there, the UPS guy, some local knowledge pro and the rest of the family are sitting there BS'ing and having lunch.

Those guys are awesome. Gowdy is the man. I feel guilty when I don't go there.
