Sure quiet here on the forum.

I haven't seen much about security in Puerto Penasco.
With Spring Breakers coming soon is RP planning any additional security from border to RP?
I have friends who cancelled their trip for mid March.
Any updated information?

We've been down several times over the past month. We now drive during the morning to get to Penasco, and leave around 4. Outside of Sonoyta, there are inspections from state police. We haven't seen any problems other than it's has been slow, both in town and at the Mayan.

I share Miramar's experience -- just got back. All was very quiet. Too quiet. Penasco seems to be still reeling from the border closure and scary stories. I'm waiting for (surprised not to see yet) the predictable, annual-like-clockwork, pre-spring-break "warning" by the State Department to avoid travel to Mexico. Oh well, beach to myself . . . .

We have been travelling to PP for many years.
So far we are still going in March for a few weeks and also hear that Puerto Penasco is very quiet.
All I'm wanting to hear if its still a safe pace for Americans.

Hope to hear more from the local Americans down there.

Weird….crossed on Sunday at 11 am ( end of rodeo weekend for Tucson people) and only 3 cars in front of me……don't get me wrong this battle between cartel factions is real but so far Puerto Penasco is off limits to gun play

So typical stuff like always.

We made a round trip up to Phx and back this past Sunday. Very few cars on the way out. We came back across the border about 4 and I'd guess about 30-40 cars in line coming back into the US.

Rich , before the shut down it would have been a couple hundred at least!

I agree...I was shocked when we came back across with how few cars there were.

I have another perspective. I have a short term rental home in Pinetop where rental business has also dropped off. My measures of tourist volume are different for the two places. In Pinetop I'm measuring rental vacancies; I don't know if tourism there is actually down since the supply of Pinetop rentals could simply be too high for the market. For Rocky Point, we're measuring cars going through the border on weekends when the volume should be higher. Neither approach is a very scientific, but assuming seasonally adjusted volume is down in both places, maybe there's a common cause. Gas prices? Inflation especially at restaurants? Or are we seeing changes in public preferences for how to spend vacations?

Maybe it's just a coincidence and the business declines in both places are caused by forces unique to each place, but I have to wonder.

I agree... Its just the cost of living, gas, inflation, and people just dont have cash like they use too.... When is the crazy spring breaks???

Mexican interests doing these huge condo builds have pulled a lot of business away from older properties.Anyone thinking of making money on renting their house needs to rethink that plan.
Seeing those gun battles in Sonoyta not to mention the closure had an effect plus the greed factor has too.You can fly from Tucson to Ontario for as low as $130 rt and Uber to Laguna Beach etc. and nab a nice motel for $120 a night

Edit: travel is booming everywhere but 2024 looks epic. Could the border wait and speed trap issues also be discouraging visitors?

spring break is happening soon. go to your local hang outs see some new faces.

We're here at the Reef Rv park. Stay for a month. Been fairly empty, except for two caravans. So Fantasy tours seems to be doing ok. Problem is , there are alot of empty spaces. Waiting to see how many roll in for the weekend. The people here seem to be waiting for spring break as a kind of "yardstick" as to what the tourism is going to be. We'll see.

Well my sandy beach rental that wasn’t booked for spring did book last minute. So getting more optimistic for a normal return!

I saw on a news report that because the border was closed, a lot of people booked Spring Break other places, so even now that we're open, it was too late for many people.

90 minute wait to cross late yesterday afternoon…
