Halibut this morning

Appreciate the tips guys. Was able to have a good few hours of fishing this morning. Zman diesel minnow smoke shad color I believe. 3/8 jig head.

My understanding is they're Cortez Halibut.

Correct.

I think a few might be CA Halibut. They are the darker brown and the color is more solid vs the Cortez Halibut are those spotty ones in the picture that have the really cool patterns and camo coloring. I could be wrong.

Varying opinions on keeping smaller fish yes, 5 fish limit law???? No. Unless you can provide a link and share your knowledge... There are certain SPORT FISH species that DO have limit regulation in Mexico but to my knowledge Halibut are not on the list. To my knowledge GROUPER are NOT even on the list!!! WTFFFFFFFFF?!

Technically, I think yes. The exact genus and specie does have a name. The two that are found in coastal RP water is the California Halibut and Cortez Halibut.

But to answer your question in a more informal way, yes, most people would accept that as suitable alternative. You could say yea I was down in RP this weekend and I caught a couple of Flounder from shore... that would be acceptable to 99% of people. Then you'd have some asshole like me be like yea, I love catching those Halibut down there... This conversation/topic has been had sooooo many times on this forum LOL I mean going back and forth if they're Halibut or Flounder. The Cholla Bay Sportmens Club trophies for the annual derby do say FLOUNDER on them for that specific category for Shore Fishing. Generally, some people will say that if you catch them from shore they are flounder but if you go out to one of the reefs on a boat and catch a bigger model, it's a Halibut. Regardless, you're generally correct if you refer to it as either but an aficionado will tell you they are Halibut and which Halibut specifically. Now, on the East Coast, North Carolina up to New York, Long Island they are Summer and Winter FLOUNDER is what I see them referred to as almost always.

↑↑↑↑ These are the more common shore caught Halibut in Rocky Point. Notice they are the ones with really cool spotting and camo coloring. If you look at them when they come out of the water their patterns are unreal. Almost 3D looking!

What's catching today? We will be down on the 8th for a week and just wondering. I want to go out to the 10-mile reef if I can find a trip that I can afford,
