Lukeville border Crossing

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will temporarily close the Lukeville crossing on the Arizona-Mexico border from all traffic, starting Monday, due to the migrant surge, the agency announced Friday.

"Both northbound and southbound pedestrian and vehicle traffic at Lukeville Port of Entry will be suspended until further notice. Travelers can cross into or out of the United States through either the Nogales Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona or the San Luis Port of Entry in San Luis, Arizona," CBP said.

From Lukeville, Nogales is about 200 miles distant and San Luis is about 130 miles away. The Lukeville crossing is popular with Arizonans traveling to to Puerto Peñasco, known in the U.S. as Rocky Point or "Arizona’s beach".

CBP said:

“In response to increased levels of migrant encounters at the Southwest Border, fueled by smugglers peddling disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals, CBP is surging all available resources to expeditiously and safely process migrants. CBP will continue to prioritize our border security mission as necessary in response to this evolving situation.

“Beginning on Monday, December 4th, CBP’s Office of Field Operations will temporarily suspend operations in Lukeville, Arizona, in order to redirect personnel to assist the U.S. Border Patrol with taking migrants into custody. ...

“As we respond with additional resources and apply consequences for unlawful entry, the migration trends shift as well. We continue to adjust our operational plans to maximize enforcement efforts against those noncitizens who do not use lawful pathways or processes such as CBP One™ and those without a legal basis to remain in the United States.”

Don’t understand how or why they are closing southbound traffic?
joanC
Hope the last person leaving Penasco puts the lights out!

I expect some of the motive for this action is political, to shine some light on Biden, Hobbs and the amoeba, Mayorkas.
joanC
I calculate the required driving time from Penasco to PHX via Nogales to be 8.5 hrs and via San Luis/Yuma to be 6.5 hrs, both plus whatever time it takes to clear the border.
Kea
Which crossing /route is more "motorhome towing a car" friendly?
randy and patty
Isn’t there still going to be cbp there anyway to stop people just walking through both directions?
joanC
Choose either one...your chances of getting RV Jacked and losing the towed car are about the same.
joanC
I question how many men will actually be freed up to catch the Guineans?
MIRAMAR
Border closing indefinitely on Sunday at 8, according to Border Patrol. We just crossed. Make sure you get out in time- there's a lot of traffic coming down who may not realize about the border closure.

Go Nogales Kea . Take Maraposa and the toll road not the free one at Magdalena . Turn off at the exit to Santa Ana then head to Caborca. Bring Pesos for the tolls and try not to drive at night……shit is heating up in Caborca again and cattle on the Coastal as you head from Caborca to Puerto Penasco.

Close to Zero ….ignore the fear trolls you got this!
Kea
How is Caborca during the day?

How mountainous is this route? (Motorhomes don’t like mountains - LOL)

Early as hell start from Phoenix is in order . I take it occasionally from Tucson to Santo zTomas and with no traffic problems can make it in 4 1/2 hours…so figure 7 from Phoenix to RP

No problem Toll road all the way to Caborca then flat as a board . Watch for potholes
joanC
I say San Luis. Great signage thru town and once on #3 straight thru. No other towns to deal with etc. You'll come in NW of Town.
Forget the headaches of the Caborca / Penasco Hwy. Which is usually full of potholes etc.

This is obviously a political move by Bp to get the extra funding put back in that is threatened by the House leadership

I travel to Mexicali along hwy 2 fairly often. There are no more safety concerns than driving from Penasco to Sonoyta.
Kea
FWIW, our destination will be in TX. So San Luis is further out of the way. But we are more familiar with it, having driven through en route to Mexicali. But that was without the RV.

Which Hwy 2 or 3? I've done both. #3 is my preferred route going to CA. I can't comment on the Nogales to Caborca but can on PP to Caborca.
Kea
We’ve done both, also. No real preference. One is a little longer, the other has sand dunes. Longer would probably be better with motorhome.
randy and patty
Still don’t understand how CBP can close border going south? We never have any interaction with US side going in to Mexico.
JayT
From Phoenix, I'd recommend going through Yuma/San Luis and taking the toll road south of San Luis to the coastal highway 3, which will probably tack on another 2.5 hours to the usual straight shot trip through Lukeville. Getting through San Luis is pretty easy - the streets are well marked and filled with a combination of local and commercial traffic. The toll road south of San Luis is really nice, well maintained and can feel like your own private road when the traffic is light (I think the toll is 120 pesos, but don't remember exactly). Once you're off the toll road to the south and on the coastal highway, it's a beautiful and very desolate trip to Penasco with El Golfo being the only small town between. Make sure you have plenty of gas and water. You'll see sand dunes, salt flats and rocky bluffs along the ocean. The road twists in spots and you need to watch out for piles of blown sand on the road.

I've also taken the Mexico 2 along the border from San Luis to Sonoyta, but don't recommend it. It is packed with commercial trucks with no place to turn off the elevated road in many places.

Safe travels!

People have the legal right under our laws to request asylum but we need to fund hundreds and hundreds of facilities and judges at the point of apprehension to quickly weed out the 90% who dont have a case.Guess who is holding that money up? .

Time to re-think asylum and immigration in general. The world isn't the same anymore. Offering the prospect of asylum is bringing misery to more people than it helps. I've always hated the concept of the wall, but I'm ready to give in.

The border crossing at Sasabe may be the closest.

I would not go through Sasabe with the Cartel violence. Nogales would be safest, but only during the day

I’m looking past this closure to when the border re-opens. Will we be subjected to future border closures on shorter notice. How can we trust this administration. Will we be given 24 hours next time. Could this be the new normal? What a mess.

It might reopen. Or it might become the permanent new gateway to a city overlaying the former Organ Pipe National Monument. (Google Glen Beck, Is This The Shady Reason . . . ) I'd wondered why they've been widening the northbound road at the gate. . . .

[/QUOTE Algodones is northwest of San Luis, leaving San Luis west on Hwy. 2, you will come also to hwy. 2 headed north to Algodones. It foliows a canal and a bunch of shacks until you are on the outskirts of town.. (its the worst road ever, it is elevated and full of pot holes).. You can drive across, there is only 1 lane and traffic is light some days and some days it's an hour or 2. and you will pop out in California.. Lots of burned adobe comes from here and lots of Algodon when in season...[/QUOTE]

Because they've converted it (diverted all funds) from a border crossing to a northbound gateway.

Talk about erosion of a country. There will be more crime, gangs ,drugs and costly infrastructure upgrades to housing, schools medical you name it. Here north of the border our Prime minster hedged all bets that immigration was key to increasing more jobs to house and provide essentials for immigrants. Although legally done and on a much smaller scale as to what is happening in the USA it has back fired. This will only lead to division as these immigrants start buying business and carve out their dream of living better life.

The CPB is down about 2000 agents (that's 80,000 man hours of work each week). The funding is tied up in congress and being as objective as I can be it appears neither side is really interested in moving things forward because border funding creates great publicity for them and if the border gets funded they lose news time.

The State of Sonora has no control over what's happening, but I expect AML0 is giggling!

Sonora State cannot pay anything for the Africans and Mid East folks if they can't waltz through the actual border facility. Why bother squeezing through a cut out in the wall?

You need to understand migration crossing international borders is a federal govt issue. If the 'hugger no bullet boy' AMLO decides to stop sticking it to the US in retribution for whatever wacko theory he's embracing this week, he can close his southern border. Within 24 hrs the single males from every hell-hole country in Africa, India, China, Israel, Syria, Yemen, etc, etc, will stop leaving their homes, and most will turn tail and return to their family. In the meantime, the AZ governor wimpette, Hobbs, is playing coy, sniffing the political wind before she moves to help 'zonans'.

I am trying to figure this out. You adamantly state that the borders are a federal government issue (I happen to agree) then you slam Hobbs, who is a governor, after you implied states can't do anything. I agree this whole thing is a mess, but many of your posts feel like you close your eyes and throw a dart. And no, I am not new to Penasco. Any advice for a motorhome towing a car to get through San Luis crossing (size-wise)? We’ll need to be in the correct lane ahead of time. We can’t backup without jackknifing the car.

What about Andrade? Wait times appear to be shorter. But I read some of the streets are narrow (but I don’t know when that article was written, so could be different now?)

Thanks

This was posted on RP Times: "Crossed San Luis during rush hour image yesterday (Friday) and line was back about 3 miles on Hwy. 95 at 4:30pm. Got across at 5:30pm and got pulled into Secondary where I spent about 5 min. talking about my dog image while he barely looked in my truck and cooler. NOTE!!! All side roads were blocked, so you need to be on Hwy. 95 or flip some u-turns as they were not letting anyone onto Main St. from the side roads. (I came in I-8 to Hwy. 195). Assuming this was just a Friday thing. Went that way since I hadn't been in awhile, but I much prefer going through town and coming down Hwy. 95. "

But at least the players on Wisconsin are Midwest local and not imported from Europe and Mali with two to three years of European experience playing European professional basketball and going back in the summer to horn more of their skills. Disgusting the amount of trash!

My husband was in Penasco over the weekend and said the Malecon was completely dead: Flavios and BooBar closed on a Saturday night. He went to Blue Marlin and was the 3rd guest for the entire day. So sad to see what this policy is doing to our beloved community, especially during the Christmas season.

Border wait time in Nogales was 1:15 on Sunday night (Mariposa crossing).

I don't think the Administration realized the closure of a "small border crossing" would have on multiple communities: Penasco, Sonoyta, Nogales, Why, Nogales and San Luis.

We left Play Encanto at 7:30 Tuesday morning. Arrived at the San Luis Border via Highway 2 at 10:00. , correction 10:30 ..We were in the general lane < middle lane > with passports only. 2.5 hours later we crossed into San Luis Az. I asked the gal at the stop what would happen if we would’ve took the ready lane on the right hand side, she said we would immediately be sent to secondary. With a smile as you might be there a long time….. We crossed yesterday afternoon around 4 and passed through the Ready Line around 5. So painful compared to Sonoyta/Lukeville, and the potholes/shoulder issues on the Coastal Highway are scary. About 8 hour trip back to Tucson vs. 4 hours. Can't wait until they reopen (if ever) the crossing.
Kea
FYI - RVs must use General lane. Turn at border is too tight to use Ready lane (on the right) and not allowed in Sentri Lane (even with credentials).

When I checked CBP website on wait times, it mentioned there's a second border crossing- San Luis II which has a ready line. We called them to see if we could use that line, since we both have passport cards, but they said it's just for commercial crossing.

I hope they look at opening it up for passenger Ready Lane traffic.

BTW, my husband had to go to Nogales (our dog had neck surgery in San Luis on Wednesday), and we needed some antibiotic spray for his wound. He said the pedestrian line is at least 2 hours long-crazy!

We seen the same thing on the pedestrian line as we were in the middle lane. The Border agent on the other side of the fence would only let three or four people through at a time. That line moved slower than our line. I assume they were all Mexican nationals and wondered where they would be going?

On the Mexican side of the entry, they are re-doing the Inspection area and canopy also both sides of the road going
north and south are currently dirt. I am guessing that when that is all done the Lukeville entry will re-open.
Good time to do all of that since it's the slow season, but when they decided to do all this they seem to have
severely under estimated the impact on the people in the towns affected by this. Yea!! we can attach files again.:)

Haven’t seen any videos of migrants at Lukville lately. You think words is out that no one is waiting with presents for these migrants and they have chosen a new location. Sad if this is the case it only means the closure was successful and might remain closed for longer periods of time.

I went to Lukeville Friday to retrieve mail and packages, under the drive thru, there were still 30 or 40 being processed and loaded into vans.. Miguel at the Post office said earlier the drive thru was packed.. He aslo mentioned, customs let the manager of the UETA store cross to pack all inventory and send it to Calexico..

Thanks for the update Corndog. Any chance construction on the Mexico side was a planned event and the border was closed anyways. To get ready for a project of this type you would need engineers and a tendering process equipment. It just seems that this construction is not coincidental.

I just saw video from Lukeville- it's crazy as ever. Don't plan on them opening the border in January, things are going too well to stop this now.

Just an idea. If funding is essentially the problem I would be willing to pay a 10-15 dollar border fee. It would save more than that in gas and so much time!

Remember when they wanted to charge a fee to enter Organ Pipe National Park?
randy and patty
I don’t remember that but pretty much every park in Utah charges a fee.
ernesto
Yes , to use the park. We are more a pass through. There has always been a feeling of animosity from the Federal employees down there. IMHO

I just did the San Luis route last week. Not so bad on the way down, but I cannot see an easy way back after studying wait times at San Luis. They were reporting a 50 minute wait. Was actually 90. Took me 7 and a half hours, I could have gone to San Carlos in that time. No bueno.

We're observing the highly predictable bulldozing phase of the US, and Lukeville happened to have been converted to a gateway required to make it happen.

It's so sad to see the desert being decimated, trees burned, plants trampled. It will take years before the desert comes back.

Az news...not the CBP website... Lukeville crossing supposed to reopen 4 Jan, 2024. We'll see.

Hell , cattle grazing by me and my neighbors wrecked it for the last 150 years already.
