yes, and paying for a half page ad they could have pictured the beauty of Sonora.
In quarters, 1/4 beach & Sea, 1/4 Golf & dunes. 1/4 Food & dancing,
1/4 ad Text, for the ones that want to have a good time, "we welcome People from Arizona",
Sonora Turismo, Gotosonora . com, MEXICO.
Instead of "we are looking for people from AZ, We See YOU!!!
(I picture Robert De'Niro in Meet the Parents. pointing "I see you")
Well people I talk to in AZ think there will be backlash from ordinary mexicans because of the 1070 crap, this just makes it seem so. There is no backlash but people perceive what they will
Let's try this again....the ad was in the previous post...but disappeared.... To me the ad can be misinterpreted...to be very sinister...definitely could scare off those on the fence about coming to Mexico!!!
today's ad was on Page A-10 same size, half page.
Can someone post it for the record?
Sonoran PR people must not speak English and in this is "Lost in Translation"
Would love to hear what they were thinking using this spread?
Anyone? Please explain their train of thought.
Today's difference is in the binoculars, white Americans frolicking clueless "not in Rocky Point" and not a "dune beach" which is Sonora's trade mark. Yikes.
The beaches have Green growth (jungle) up from the beaches, one thinks of Caribbean or south Pacific.
not for the record, i mean for other to see, many do not get the Arizona Republic, the biggest circulation news paper in the state of Arizona. I would think Cali eyeballs are here?
I just looked at it. I think it's just weird, Yesterday, you couldn't tell what was reflected in the glasses. Today it looks like a girl in a bathing suit. It's just wierd and not very eye-catching. If I hadn't been looking for it, I would have never even seen it.
Now it's even wierder. You don't think someone used the SonoraTurismo name to put this up in retaliation for SB1070? That would cost someone a lot of money.....and not make sense because we, the people, didn't vote for it.....I hope the info becomes public. I'm curious now.....

That ad will only hurt tourism in Mexico/Rocky Point....so that would be crazy.....
Wonder if someone claiming to be Sonora Tourism placed the ad in retaliation for Calderon's comments this week????and AZ Republic didn't bother to check who it was? ....A little conspiracy theory...
The ad was conceived and paid for by Sonora Turismo. It imho was not properly vetted in view of the stuff going on and the tender relations between Mex and AZ but it is what it is. It is totally innocent in its meaning but perception is reality, I fight the perception thing all day long and it gets me banned (lol Stu) but this is a classic example of a faux paux it just didn't come out as cute as it was intentioned! Next time maybe a bit better...............
If I was advising Sonoro Turismo, I would advise full damage control mode, by admitting and apologising for a cultural misunderstanding with no offense intended to US tourists. This would be for starters until the result could be observed. Sadly this is one more self inflicted shot in the foot at a time when Mexico can't afford it.
Well, I hope it is just a big gaffe on the part of Sonora Turismo. I really didn't want to go look for my tin foil hat!!! I just can't imagine that they wouldn't see this as not appropriate this week. The publicity on all of this (SB1070 and Calderone's visit) has been huge.......Nobody in the Turismo department said "Um, this might not be a good time for this?????" I really need my aagh smilie here, Stuart! We'll see what unfolds this week. 5 more days until I'm there!!!!!!!!!!
Look at Russ the martyr. How about you tackle racism, ageism, maybe even sexual orientation discrimination when you get done with 'fighting' biased perceptions against Mexico?
Should I cancel my family trip? I am 7 days away from coming down for a week. The family has been looking forward to our trip. However, if Mexico is watching and does not want us there, I guess I could drive another 5 hours and go to San Diego.
Don't cancel your trip. RP is safe. This guy Russ is a clown who thinks he speaks for the Mexican people. He is nothing but a mealy mouth gringo who is part of the tourism board. This ad does not represent what the Mexicans feel as I have been told by many.
Dan's right, you should go on down and enjoy yourself.
I don't agree with the banning though. It's not like he came after someone etc, like the Grim did with me. That seemed to be perfectly acceptable at that time, and trust me, I know why it was.
Beach walker, do not cancel, Rocky point and the citizens of RP, will take good care of you.
They know who butters their bread and it is people like you.
Rocky Point is beautiful and you will not regret the life time memories you will have with your family.
OK....everybody....CHILL.....most of us know the motives behind what SOME people post on here.....we don't need to get into a pissin' contest over that.....:coldone:
And to the poster asking about it being safe....come on down...I come down with my teenage daughter (oops....correction she is no longer a teenager!!!).....I wouldn't if I felt threatened at all!!!!:deadhorse:
The people of Penasco are not stupid....they have been going thru a rough time with the lack of tourists the last 2 years....and they're not going to go out of their way to make things worse!!! Regardless of what some idiot who didn't know better put out as an ad!!!!
Joe, you of all people should know that Dan and I are friends, and have been for years... As far as the Happy go's, who else besides myself has spent two day's with him, and lived to tell about it?
EDIT!... How many times, and years now, have I told you I'm the Lone Wolf, and not a pack member HAPPY?... As far as fishing on the runner, it needs to get on the water first!

This really reminds me of an incident in the late 1980s in Cabo (before Cabo was big and famous). Hubby and I were driving out of town toward our condo in Cabo Bello and we passed a flatbed truck packed full of young Mexican soldiers, all in uniform and armed to the teeth with assault rifles. They smiled and waved as we drove by. What was funny (hilarious, really) about that was the big sign draped across the side of the truck. It essentially said something like "The Mexican Army is here to protect you" and was meant to reassure gringo tourists who thought Pancho Villa was still on the loose out there.
Thanks for quoting me and then not talking bad about me and what I do. I swear there is a lot of anger on this forum and I am not sure why that is. But then why should I know as I am just a mealy mouthed tourist clapping cotton candy server with nothing but bad intentions?
