This story is being reported at several of the Phoenix area news stations. I saw it this morning at abc15.com. It really surprises me that the police would let this happen (road blocks). This is really going to hurt travel to RP this Holiday weekend, I believe.

That would be the point I am afraid. All of this is still unconfirmed but it makes for fantastic attention getting. We will report what we know after our meeting tonight

That's just the point! It's not happening!

Why doesn't the media focus on something real like the oil spill in the gulf... rather than make up news to distract us from what is not being done to resolve the spill???

It really surprises me that the police would let this happen (road blocks).

Please; read this complete thread. There has not been any road blocks on the road into Rocky point as far as anyone and everyone has been able to tell. There is no confirmation on any of the so called report... All this stuff is just pulled out of a hat that says Mexico on it.
VacationVanessa
Good point. I just saw on the RP Facebook page that someone said they and their family were stopped at a non-police sanctioned checkpoint and let go. Nothing bad happened but it scared them. I'm wondering how the local police and mayor in RP are taking this. I would assume they would beef up patrols on that stretch of highway like they did following the spring break advisory last year.

Nobody that lives here Mexicans included know anything about this and if it were true it would be on the local news here. I may have said that before but whatever it is ok to say it again, this has been my topic of conversation all day and will continue well into the evening. We hope to have some answers soon.

Tuesday May 18 and Friday May 21 went to PP, both trips were at night, Tuesday arrived to PP at 8:30 pm and Friday at 10pm, this times are aprox. and did not see anything in the roads that resemble a check point between Sonoyta to Penasco, I have some cheese for the whinners and some tequila for the non-whinners, in the last 19 years the media never changed my opinion about Puerto Penasco, I love it now that it is slower but it is hurting the business and the good people of PP and this "incident" is the typical "let's try to keep the dollars home for the holidays" scam that we have seen for the last few years, I be done this weekend too!!

Hey! A friend of a guy I work with cousin got stopped on the road by a rogue Mexican dentist! He capped two teeth, repaired a cavity, then disappeared into the desert! Nearly scared him to death because he though he'd actually have to pay the guy! IT'S TRUE!!! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!

I just drove back to Phx from Rocky Point last night at 10pm & saw nothing out of the ordinary. I drive back & fourth usually twice a month for years now & I almost always drive at night. I've never seen or heard of any type of check point like they describe. This story sounds a little odd to me as well & what a non story also. AZ Republic.........extra extra read all about it....." TRAVEL ADVISORY TO RP" !!! " police check point on highway stops people ask's to see their id then lets them proceed".........OH MY !! time to alert the public !!!!

I drove down on May 15- crossed the border at 1pm, and drove into Penasco without incident except for a brief delay due to an accident at the Laguna/Caborca highway exchange.

The children's hospital collections people weren't even out that day.

Drove back up on May 18 made it from Penasco to Sonoyta without incident.

Now, that being said- I haven't driven that road at night in over 15 years, nor will I plan to do so anytime soon...

No, no one forgot to mention those events. They have been public knowledge, word of mouth and local news. So has the bit about the abogado. No secrets here. I guess the AZ media just missed out on a couple of jucie stories, a little late now to call them News.

My wife and a gal friend crossed the border about 2:00 PM today and guess what? Not one dead body or burnt out car or anything and no day time check points.

**Long Post Alert**

Hola Amigos! It's been interesting reading. Just heard about all of the media reports from a friend who knew we were headed to RP in the relatively near future who wanted to give us a heads up, so I came here to see what I could see, given the fact that y'all have been a great (and balanced) source of info in the past when these types of stories have surfaced. (Thank you for that, BTW.)

Also, we (like most of you) are fairly busy peeps and don't watch alot of TV, so we missed the initial news reports and the laughable AD for Sonora that was supposedly designed to entice visitors (talk about missing the mark, but that is a whole other thread for which I do not have time).

So, now that you've got a little background, I wanted to share our experience:

I used to go to RP in the late '80's & early '90's. I went to the U of A and it was a quick and cheap get-a-way. I'd only been a few times (never over Spring break!) and camped on the beach (this was RP pre-condo) and never had any issues.

Fast forward to a few years ago, when I convinced my husband to **finally** go for the weekend. He had never been and was always leery of Mexico, citing safety concerns.

We'll, we went down in January 2008 with a friend who has a small shack in Cholla (or is it Choya?) Bay and my husband loved it!

We had great time, he felt safe, regretted all those years we'd stayed away and we've been back several times since (May and June in 2008, January/February, June and ??? in 2009 and January and another trip planned in the near term for 2010).

Each time we travelled over a weekend and during the day (although for our trip in January 2010, we drove the last several miles in the dark as we left PHX late in the afternoon).

As for check points and/or road blocks, unlike most of you, we've encountered two (we're just lucky, I guess!) just outside of Sonoyta (once we'd past thru the town) on the way to RP.

We've also seen the people with the cans collecting for a charity, but the two check points/road blocks we encountered were hosted by armed men (both young and middle aged) who looked to be official (although we did not ask any questions for obvious reasons).

Each time, they were stopping cars in both directions (if I remember correctly) and were polite. Each time, there were other cars that were also stopped and in the process of being searched. One time (the first time, I think) we were asked to step out of our car. The other time, they just looked thru the windows and waved us through.

Both times I was a bit unnerved (such young men so heavily armed) but nothing they did was of concern or caused us to think that we were stopped at anything other than an "official" ck point.

The last several times we traveled to RP, we did not encounter any check points.

Since there is not much of a WOW factor to this post, some of you may be wondering why I even posted our story at all. The reason is that a few people earlier in this thread mentioned that they travel to RP all the time and had never been stopped or encountered a ck point and a lot of the info that has been shared/posted was from "someone who knew someone who heard that someone else had seen or been stopped at a ck point in the road to RP", so I figured I'd share our first-hand account of our experience during our travel. Hope it helps a bit.

As for us, we're looking forward to Russ' report re: the meeting and will make a decision about our upcoming trip based on our assessment of the info we gather.

Really looking forward to our upcoming trip and do not anticipate having to cxl, but also keeping an open mind and not taking any unnecessary risks. Mexico and RP will always be there, so if we end up postponing this trip based on what we learn here and from other sources, we *will* be back!

Where have you been? I used to run into (what I assumed) was a military checkpoint almost every time I went down in the late 80's and 90's. It always scared the hell out of my wife. They always had a deuce and a half or a Humvee, M-60's and M-16's at the ready. These soldiers never spoke english but would make motions with their hands like they either were looking for pot or wanted pot I don't know. I noticed they would do a full search on Mexican vehicles.

These were either right outside of town or sometimes close to Sonoyta.

None of the people I sent it to posted it on here for good reason, because unlike what you would have done, they were trying to find out about the truth to it, and see if it was a hoax or not. In a nut shell, I didn't think you were responsible enough to react to it a rational manner. That could be why I didn't send it to you, but it's not.LOL... The bottom line is that it was not true, those things did not happen on the road to PP...Your original post about the burnt out cars etc was nothing but a perfect example of "yellow journalism". Now after the head in the sand remark you say, "I always assumed they were accidents", could have said that earlier, don't ya think?

That's just ridiculous Kenny. Do you think trying to suppress this publicly posted information worked very well? I may or may not of just posted the link or copy of the message. I had no idea what a "consulate warden" was so I would have gone through the .gov site myself and not trusted a random link.

Since when did my posts become 'journalism' yellow or otherwise? When I drive by a burned out car, either in the U.S. or Mexico, I assume just like any reasonable person that it's an accident. This seriously worded travel message caused me to wonder whether my assumptions were wrong, or do I have to spell this out for everyone? Don't we all have at least a high school education here?

Ehh, I am not sure what all the fuss is. I look at the bright side, my next condo rental will be even cheaper, the harbor just a little less crowded and the wait at the border will be just a little shorter. Life is getting better in RP!
Kenny
I've seen some right as you entered town in the last few years, but I was always just waved around them. Never stopped, never a car search etc.
One night a few years ago I was sitting with Chuck, and after dark on the wall at his old place that was right on the beach when Angel, his dog, started barking toward the water. We couldn't see what she was barking at, at first, but suddenly these guy's dressed in camo with mask's and AK's were coming right straight up the beach from the water at us until they saw where Angel was at. At that time they split up and went around us, and up the road next to the trailer court.
Those guy's were more afraid of Angel, than we were of them. If I remember right, we found the whole thing amusing, not threatening.

Thank you for that post and that pretty much mirrors my experience with the checkpoints (though I've been through more of them). I just chalked it up to "that's Mexico" and went along my oblivious way.

I seem to recall more checkpoints in the late 80's and early to mid 90's; then they seemed to disappear when the Policia in RP became militarized (when they went from normal dark blue uniforms to the grey urban camo and trucks with the jump seats in back that you see today. Mexico in general seems to have an obsssion with militaristic uniforms IMO and going to the grey urban camo was a poor choice.) I guess seeing these SWAT like guys driving around town in some strange way isn't quite as unnerving as the military out on the open highway.
------

But like I've been saying all along it's up to each individual to make their own informed choice about the risks they take. Trying to suppress negative information only makes it worse when it comes out. THis latest debacle is a perfect example; I don't think any ad campaign is going to be fixing this one. Diehard Rocky Point veterans will most likely stlll go, but I think getting new people is going to be a really hard sell now.

We were stopped once a few years ago with the "KID" looking with guns. They only searched the Mexican cars and sent the rest on. It was a big weekend and a big backup and it took over an hour to get through it. It was about 2 or so miles out of town.

Exactly! I can understand not wanting your mother calling and trying to get you to cancel a trip but who cares if the general public won't come down? This whole thing is comical at best (but I can just see Russ and Bob firing off angry letters to the editor!) Oh boo hoo hoo the investors don't make any money, the mexicans don't get to charge us U.S. prices for beer. They'll move on to more fertile grounds like Cancun or Cabo. There will still be beachhouses to rent, fish in the sea, and La Curva for an Especial #2.

As they have been for a long time now Jerry. If you remember the guy's on bloody decks have been posting for years now on how they've had to change the way, and time of day they travel down. Surfers getting ripped of at Rosarita, bass fisherman getting ripped off in the interior. The cop station shot up, and what, 6 killed at the Y last year, and on it go's.

Hey y'all...I may be a little late on the uptake on this (or not), but here is some mixed (and somewhat better?) news, at least from a tourist's perspective:

http://www.kgun9.com/Global/story.asp?S=12535326

Was especialy happy to see the following in the story:

The message also states some people who have not stopped at these unofficial checkpoints have been shot at and killed. We asked the U.S. State Department for more information on these killings. All they could say is they do not have any information regarding American citizens being injured.

So we called Rocky Points Director of International Relations and Tourism. Fausto Soto told us these reports are rumors. Soto says the state police, the federal attorney's office and the mayor's office have all investigated and found nothing.

"So far we have been trying to find out about this information and so far it's unfounded, it's untrue," Fausto Soto said.

The consulate's office first sent out this message to it's employees then released it to the general public because it could affect anyone.

Soto also told us the beach city is planning to have extra roadside assistance and patrols in the area during the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Missed the PHX story that Seaside posted about earlier today, but will keep and eye on the net for it.

Also, any word from Russ on the meeting earlier today?

I've been around...I just keep quiet most of the time and stay out of the fray :-D. As for us, never ran into any ck points in the 80's or 90's, so were really surprised when we saw them on visits in 2008/2009! And I completely understand how she felt...freaked me out a bit, too...just not used to seeing that much firepower in one location, but we just came to expect it as the "way things are" south of the Border and choose to believe that their presence was helping to keep the bad guys away.

Happy the recap of our experience helped illustrate your experience, too! Still looking forward to going, but adopting a wait and see attitude at present...don't want to be all chicken little about this, just trying to be prudent and reasonably cautious.

Thanks Manny!

Also wanted to pass this along as well:

Watching Mike Watkis' report on Channel 3 (in Phoenix). Mike sounds tired (or weary) and they've got a statement by the Phoenix based AAA spokesperson, but no new info in this report.

So, on another note, what do y'all think about the Suns...even the president has some thoughts around this (LOL) so, GO SUNS!

Ehh, I am not sure what all the fuss is. I look at the bright side, my next condo rental will be even cheaper, the harbor just a little less crowded and the wait at the border will be just a little shorter. Life is getting better in RP!

Nope, and I'm going to be updating it soon, because that "bs" as you call it is FACT. But I'm thoroughly enjoying that it annoys you, Pete, Russ, Bob and more!

I hope the whole damn lot of you become penniless, then you can sweep the sand out of my trailer on Sandy Beach for a pittance.

Any questions?

You know what Kenny? I'm going to make it a special mission to monitor the consulate and other Government websites. There wont be a 5 day delay next time.
Submarine
I think caravaning is unsafe because people don't drive fast enough.

Well this story is still alive and well. Interesting comments on KTAR:

Last time I went to Rocky Point
Minuteman

with the kids I was pulled over and had a gun pointed at my head and was asked for money and laughed at in front of my kids. Never again will I go to Mexico.

Not much to tell I was following a
Minuteman

friend and his family to the Sandy Beach area and lost him at a Stop light. As the light changed a police car pulled in right behind me and followed until we were heading towards that open part passed the town onto the highway and they pulled us over and signaled for me to get out of the car and then spoke in Spanish which I didn't know they laughed and then got mad because they wanted money I just didn't know how much thats when one pulled his gun the other looked at my kids and laughed I handed them $40.00 the guy with the gun tapped me on the shoulder and left. I left Mexico at that point.

Personally I like how you dismiss this official message because you basically asked everyone who you were circulating the email with "did you hear anything like this? No? Guess it's not true."

I think the U.S. consulate would have significantly better sources of accurate information than the RP rumor mill.

Sub it is a little hard to believe a guy writing about this who calls himself "minuteman" Must be his wife's nickname for him!

I also think you misread Chapos role in the larger picture. He is the guy keeping things under control in our area of concern. He may even have a secret deal with the US to look for non- Latin foreigners coming up

My point is that 'minuteman' comment is no more valid or substantiated than anything posted here. He doesn't define when that occured.

BTW, just because I copy/paste something doesn't mean I'm endorsing it as fact or fiction.

Remember that 90% of the old RP police force was fired.

I think it is time for you to change your sig. It is offensive.

You've never been asked for mordida from the Police?

Yes the truth can be offensive sometimes. 066? Who knows to dial that? Is someone going to speak English on the other end? Yeah, not comforting at all.

Sorry you don't like it, Jerry but last time we tried a script it was worse. I always count on Manny to do magic with his editing and he didn't let me down this time either. I will say the same thing to you that I say to those in Mexico who criticize the accent I speak with: Pay attention to what I say not how I say it...you might learn something. At least no one can say I'm not natural.

I can't believe all the "in-fighting" that's going on here on the Forum about this "report" from the consulate!:cry:

I am not normally into the conspiracy theory garbage, but this time it does seem unusual that this report was put out just before Memorial Day......

The other questionable part is about the Consulate's report of people being killed when they didn't stop at one of these "checkpoints"......if the consulate had reports of this happening, why is it that they are just reporting this now????? And where were the reports of these killings of gringos in the US news media if the information was available????
mexicoruss
The whole thing is a lie and made up Joe thats the point. What it did was scare people before a holiday. It is unverifiable and against the policy of the Consulate to do what they did. They did it anyway against their own writing guidelines, it is incredible. They do not even respond to reporters questions about the issue they are simply stonewalling waiting for it to go away, they did their damage, they will apologize after the weekend for the inaccuracy but it will be too late for the weekend

Hey Rosey although it was a little bit Fidel Castroish in length I (being on the non-crazy side) agree with your points but think a 30 second intro would have been helpful. This sound bite lets others link to your video easier.
That being said I still find it a bit off putting none of the locals mentioned the gun battle between the Navy and the Narcos in town last month or the story on the fireworks factory exploding.Having worked with explosives some in my past it is a real shame this was allowed in town and killed a worker.Damn i can't buy pot anymore because it puts money into the hands of criminal gangs and now i can't buy fireworks from businesses that don't value human life.i guess i have to grow my own pot and make my own skyrockets....could be a dangerous combination!

For months I had been putting out the RPNO without any real heavy news happening. No sooner do I suffer a health "situation" that interfered with my being able to keep the paper up, when all hell breaks loose. We all know that I was the source for the kind of information you've been lacking, and for letting my readers down, I apologize. I will try to do better. In the meantime, you are free to ask me questions about anything you want to know.

The fireworks storage was actually meant to hold only the containers and no powder. That there was powder made the situation much more dangerous, and it was unauthorized. Unfortunate for those who were affected. The shooting of two bad guys by local Naval authorities did occur on Lopez Portillo in an area surrounded by empty land on April 30 at about 5:30pm.

As for your critique on my camera style (lack thereof), all I can say is now you know where we got the term Ramblin' Rosie!
jerry
Rosy have you heard anything about the situation in Altar with the police basically stopping every outsider they can? Plus the car jackings between Altar and Caborca? I go that way and have never had a problem but it seems whoever controls the Altar area police are out and out crooks.
Mentiras y Traición
Rosie: I hope you are feeling better! I appreciate your no-nonsense approach to getting info out to us and am looking forward to the return of RPNO! Yours is a voice I can trust!

I've taken the liberty of publishing the RPTVA's statement as a press release in The Tides. I also embedded the video. The article I published yesterday about the whole mess got 1,065 page views, so hopefully our campaign to get the facts out and repair some of the damage done will be at least partially successful.

I liked the video, Rosy (nice editing, Manny). I thought you were especially effective explaining the ad. And Russ, the part where you explained why the Consulate did what it did was well thought out. Great job, all of you, especially on such short notice! KUDOS! :notworthy: :woo:
Mexico Joe
There are unofficial roadblocks in bad neighborhoods in South Phoenix that I wouldnt stop for called STOP SIGNS... The press and journalists should be ashamed of themselves for reporting irresponsibly. These are UN verifiable reports, by UN identifiable people, about UN official checkpoints in an UN known location somewhere on the 8! Jesus, some story there. I think the only people these stories reach are the people that think MExico is a war zone like its IRAQ or something... More RP for me and you guys then i guess lol... a complete laugher this whole situation is. 3 days before the biggest weekend in RP. I bet its Joe Arpaio, hes in it with the state of Sonora right now, claiming the tourism ads were really ads targeting Arizonans for assualt, LOL....
