just got a phone call from a person in Texas who is going to PP in two weeks and he said that a friend of his that works for the FBI called him to let him know about a shooting that took place in the road somewhere between Sonoyta and PP sometime today, does anybody heard anything? or is another government/FBI false alarm?
Chari left a note at my house and in it she said... "we passed a shot up vehicle at 4:30 at Kilometer #73, 4 bullet holes and a million Feds" sounds like it's the truth...
Oh no, Ink. We passed a shot up black I think it was a Merceds SUV at kilometer 73. There were a gazillion Feds around it. I tried to visit mark but he was not at home. We can't get Magic jack up here tonight. We just got into the internet, I'll go visit Rosie tomorrow and post up.
That's a different car, time and place..did I miss it?
On the morning of Saturday, June 12, agents of the state and municipal police response telephone report to C-4, came to a point located on Cliff Road, Sonoita, approximately at kilometer 87, where they found an abandoned vehicle in The wagon type vehicle had four bullet holes in the bodywork, there were no traces of blood inside the vehicle, it is presumed it was a "surge".
At approximately 09:30 am on Saturday, June 12, the C-4 reported to the state and municipal police have received notice that on the road Sonoyta Cliff-type vehicle had left a white van, police officers reporting in effect, on the edge of the cavalcade had before it a wagon type vehicle, Toyota, Sequoia line, model 2003, 164WVM plates for the state of Arizona, 5TDZT34A435152416 serial number, according to the report prepared by officers rushed to the scene, there was not anyone inside or outside the vehicle, had four bullet holes in the rear, at the door, and in the crystal, it is noted in the report that the vehicle had no traces of blood.
Calm heads people the story has not yet to begin to unfold, it is hard to believe that if someone was missing from the states we would not have heard about it by now,...... no? Lets see what the investigation proves before we freak out! I am just trying to keep it real.
unfortunatelly it seems as real as the teenager found dead in lakeside park a couple of days ago in Tucson, but that does not change the fact that it is going to be blown out of proportion by the media as always and even worst with the vehicle having a AZ license plate, lets hope that the VIN tells us more and comes up as stolen vehicle!!
I met a guy last night at Flavios who had driven by this and asked me if I heard anything about it.
He said there was a car that was all shot up. It was about 5 miles outside of Puerto Penasco on the main highway. I happened around 4:30pm. It was right in the middle of the road.
I searched news sources but could not find anything. There was this article about 2 separate shootings yesterday in Sonoyta, but nothing on the one near Puerto Penasco.
What is being discussed/posted about are actually a combination of four separate incidents. Let me see if I can help unravel the facts for you:
1. On June 12, a white 2003 Toyota Sequoia with AZ plates was found on the Sonoyta-Penasco highway with four bullet holes in it. There was no one found with the vehicle, and there were no traces of blood inside it. The vehicle had been reported stolen approximately 8 months ago in Arizona. Authorities surmise that since the theft, it had been used for illicit purposes and that the driver was forced to stop on the highway by a rival, after which he was taken to parts unknown.
2. Yesterday morning, June 18th at 10:30am, a man by the name of Jorge Mitre Bitar Tosen was shot several times as he exited his black Suburban in Sonoyta. This happened practically in front of the hospital and he received immediate medical attention. At this time it appears he will survive the attempt on his life. The assailants got away.
3. Shortly after 3pm on June 18th, Mario Madueno of Puerto Penasco, his brother-in-law and another man were ambushed and killed in the parking lot of an OXXO. The victims were aged 34, 35 and 37, respectively. The shooters, reportedly in a grey Jeep Grand Cherokee, were seen in pursuit of black Jeep Cherokee on their way out of Sonoyta, headed towards Penasco.
4. At 3:30pm June 18th, a black 2001 Jeep Cherokee, presumed to be the one that had been chased by the shooters in the above shooting, was found abandoned and riddled with bullet holes on the highway. Again, there were no traces of blood either in or around the vehicle, leading authorities to surmise that those in the vehicle were forced to leave the scene.
I knew Mario Madueno. He operated one of his family's businesses, SJJ, the heavy machinery place on the highway outside Penasco. I didn't know him well, but remember, this is indeed a small town. He was always courteous and friendly to me.
I ,for one, hate to hear about this. I am sorry for the victims and more sorry for the panic and bad press this will create. The shootings in Phoenix are tolerated by the press but not in RP area. I will not be bullied into not going to RP and I will make sure that everyone knows that it is still a safe place to go.
Rosi, as always you bring us the information on a platter and make us understand that all this, although with ties in PP is not directed to americans or tourist in general, I just hope that the media in US takes the same approach, I'll be on the road to paradise anytime now!!
Mario was a good person to many that i know including me. He will be missed and if anyone sees Julio, please tell him Derek said that he is very sorry for the loss to him and his family. Thank you.
I heard that the Chief of Police of PP was shot at and wounded badly last night along with another officer. Good thoughts and prayers that they both recover from their injuries.
I have been in town at my home in las conchas the past 2 weeks and heard the same thing. Police Chief is still alive but barely. Where was the consctruction compny owner killed? In Penasco or Sonoyta or elsewhere.
I don't have to tell anyone here how much I love Penasco. These reports disturb me greatly. Inka, you state: "is not directed to americans or tourist in general." Very true. But, as the intensity and frequency of these gun battles and direct attacks on authority figures grow, it doesn't take a crystal ball to see that it's only a matter of time before an innocent gets caught in the crossfire. I truly dread that day that a gringo family, possibly with children, gets caught up in this simply by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or perhaps they happen to be driving a vehicle similar to what the narcos are targeting (mistaken identity).
This has been my worst fear about the violence. When this inevitably happens, roll up the carpet, turn out the lights, and stick a fork in it - Penasco tourism will be done, plain and simple. I hope I do not live to see this day.
Jeez not good for u,s, visitors and people trying to make a buck working in Sonora alike. Maybe golden bullet proof vests for the new Realtors that were just certified is in order. I was told by a hitch hiker (Realtor who's car broke down) that the condos have kept rp safe from most of the trouble because everyone has money sunk in them.A rising tide lifts all boats but a well placed bullet hole could sink them all too!

Whats this? Bullet ridden vehicles on the Mexican Highway? Crazy.
Word of the day (and what a day
Schadenfreude (pronounced /ˈʃɑːdənfrɔɪdə/ Audio (US) (help·info), German pronunciation: [ˈʃaːdənˌfʁɔʏdə]) is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.[1] This German word is used as a loanword in English and some other languages
We were driving into Rocky Point at about noon on Friday 6/18, and we passed 3 black vehicles on the side of the road pulling out large machine guns from the back of an older model jeep cherokee around kilometer 82. I called the emergency 066, and told them about it. A few minutes later the black vehicles came flying around us chasing newer model white vehicles (all suv’s or trucks). Later that evening we told a restaurant owner we know what we saw, and he happened to see the same thing, but later on around 3:30. He also saw them dragging someone out of one of the vehicles. He turned around and headed back to Sonoyta, but they came charging up behind him, then passed him, so he turned back around and headed to Rocky Point.
I couldn’t believe what I saw, and never have been so scared!
We later heard that 3 or 4 bodies had been found in the desert. Our neighbor in Rocky Point heard that the men we saw may have been undercover federales. Anyone else hear that rumor?
Coming back to AZ Firday the 18th I saw a white ford truck riddeled with bullet holes at a store OXXO I believe and what appeared to be a body next to it. It was by the Arizona Supermarket about 7 miles from the Lukeville checkpoint. Federales where on the scene. Scary all the same...
Highway from Sonyota to Rocky Point we saw a shot up Blue Jeep grand cherokee. Had bullet holes in the back of the vehicle and on the driver side. Cops all over, the road was not closed we made it to our resort just fine. After hearing about the shooting on Saturday night with the police chief we will NOT return to RP!

Thats too bad you are not coming back to RP anymore. This had had nothing to do with you! It was crime it was bad yes but it is not unique to Mexico......When you find a place that is crime free please forward that info to all of us, till then.
Colorado,
We lost a police officer 2 weeks ago. We have lost many police officers over the years. This happens a lot here in the states. Why is it different in Mexico? If you stay in the tourist areas and don't go looking for trouble, your chances of getting shot are negligible. I have 45 years in Rocky Point and I am not scared yet. Please come back. It's beautiful!!!!!
When did you last hear a police chief and his security escort were ambushed in the US? Full auto machine guns, vehicles riddled with 80 plus gun shots, hospitals held captive while assailants finish the job of killing the patient that was just brought in from the street shootout, and the list is growing by the day!
By comparison the shootings that happen here in the valley of how many million people? And of these shootings in the Phoenix metro area how many of them involve automatic weapons?
The loss of police officers life’s here have mainly been a lone shooter not involved in a drug cartel. Much of the crime here that involve large quantity of drugs and human smuggling is spill over that has roots from south of the border.
Guaranteed that many will still dispute these facts and just suggest to others to dawn their rose colored glasses when crossing the border and all will be fine because the members of the drug cartels would not purposely kill a visitor. No longer is it a matter of if it will happen as it is now when it will happen.
Until the situation across the border changes drastically no one can continue to claim that Rocky Point, Sonoyta, or the road between them is safe.

Well....I guess I'm going to do some of my own rambling....
I've been going to Penasco for about 25 years now.....I love it there.....mainly because I love the ocean and the stress relief it gives me. I've also made some great friends over the years down there. I hate California....the other possible source for my stress relief....the water is too cold, it takes twice as long for me to get there, and it will cost me 3 times as much to play. And yes, I don't live there permanently, or have a heavy investment in Penasco(like a house or condo)....I'm one of the trailer trash.....so it makes it easy to "cut and run" without losing my shirt (this was for the benefit of Rosy, Mexicoruss and a few others). I can respect your opinions and your reasons for staying, but please respect mine, and don't try to poo-poo them because of the reasons you may have for staying.
I also am not much of a believer of the concept that if it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Maybe it's true, but I'm not going to intentionally walk in front of a bus or into the middle of a narco war.
Statistically, the violence in Penasco may not be anywhere near what we see in Phoenix or Tucson, but the type of violence that we've seen in the past week or so is something that we don't experience. Just look at the police fatalities that we've had the past year or so.....how quickly were the shooters apprehended? How many of our police chiefs have been targeted? At least in Phoenix, I have a pretty good idea of what parts of town to avoid, at least if I'm not armed. Yeah, there are gang type shootings, the occasional road rage shooting, but for the remainder of the homicides, usually the people involved know each other in some way. In Penasco, the shootings have not occurred in what I would consider "seedy" areas. One last year was in the Vina del Mar parking lot, and then the target was finished off in the clinic. Another was on the main drag right ouside the bank (Calle 13/Benito Juarez). The police chief was shot up near where the new hospital is. So, what parts of town do I avoid? In addition, there is no possibility of being armed when in Mexico. As someone mentioned, a bullet doesn't go around another target to get to it's intended victim. Eventually, if this continues or escalates, some innocent bystanders will be hit....be it locals or tourists. It's inevitable when several shooters are firing automatic weapons like an AK-47. The bullets will eventually ricochet or go thru some walls or vehicles and hit an "unintended" victim (as if killers fire "discriminantly" trying to avoid "innocent bystanders")!!!
I've got a couple of friends in Penasco that I've been in touch with the past week.....asking them some specific questions. One is married to a Mexican lady who has contacts in the police department. I haven't heard anything back from him. The "no news" is what is disconcerting! Another friend wrote back to say that even the local mob bosses were upset about the police chief shooting. Are they upset about losing business in their legitimate businesses, are they upset that someone else is muscling in, or are they upset that they may have some rogue elements that they can't control? We've heard that the police chief is relatively new, but no one has shed any light as to why he was possibly targeted. Was he applying pressure on someone? Was he supporting some faction of the narcos and another faction decided to make him an example?
So, I'm not writing off Penasco....yet! I'm taking a wait and see attitude to see how things develop and play out. I'm hoping to be down over the 4th for a long weekend. But I'm also not going to put on some rosy (sorry!!!) colored glasses or stick my head in the sand and say everything is back to being peachy keen!!!

Tahiti is sort of like hawaii...long plane flight, beautiful, real expensive but in the end you are stuck on a island with people that hate you (some hide it better than others) if i had the time i would head South of Tulum...great beaches, amazing ruins, isolated parks, fresh fruit and the ability to explore a big area on your own at modest prices..
Russ are you rethinking the casual "no problem" attitude you have about people driving east of caborca yet? The boosters and the "sky is falling" crew both need to get real.the chance of a tourist getting wacked is near zero in our area but there is a criminal element that seems to be controling rocky Point. The fish rots from the head down (The Godfather?)

Not sure how to answer that Jerry. I travel east of Caborca with some regularity with no problems. I guess I could be a victim there pretty easy but I have been a traveler for a long time and not too worried about stuff.
There is a reality that crime is here. That there are those who control things to some degree but I stand on my soap box still and say "dont join them in anyway shape or form and you wont have a problem with them.
Jerry are you here or in the States? (if you are here buy me a beer) We could have a very interesting conversation on this subject but not here on this forum......
You got it next time I'm in RP.I know from personal reports that there is at least one car jacking crew that works around Altar. Many victims (mostly Mexicans)

Tahiti is nothing like Hawaii Jerry, and the people don't hate us at all. If anything, they have a beef with the French. For example, I was 'stranded' on Tahiti Iti for less than an hour when I was figuring out the Le Truck (bus) system, and had two rides within minutes of each other right to my hotel room door. Both refused any money whatsoever even the second guy who was driving on an empty tank with the fuel light on. It's a completely different culture than anywhere I've ever experienced. No tipping, no hautiness, no rudeness, no haggling, no unfriendliness.
I've actually found it to be cheaper than Hawaii, but for your average traveler it's not. People get too caught up in the Honeymoon destination and it's inflated price tag. I pay less to stay in Tahiti than I do in Rocky Point, usually around $100/night for an overwater bungalow. The trick is scooping up a cheap flight deal, which can be as cheap as a flight to Hawaii.

That's kind of ironic because 20 years ago you would have to carjack a Mexican car every 10 miles to make it to Sonoyta. I guess that's a product of manufacturing moving to Mexico that Mexicans can now afford better, newer cars and therfore carjackers have more opportunity.
Hermosillo .- Two municipal government officials were killed Tubutama with heavy weapons near the ejido San Jorge, after finishing their working day, reported PGJE.
The spokesman for the Attorney General of the State (PGJE), José Larrinaga Talamante, said the bodies were found yesterday in the municipal comptroller, Sergio Vázquez Díaz, and the Director of Public Services, Gerardo González Méndez.
The bodies were in a vehicle pick-up 1994 model Ford without license plates.
Vazquez Diaz was driving the vehicle at the time of the events, while Gonzalez Mendez was in the passenger seat.
Agents of the State Police Investigator (PEI) began research on the double homicide occurred in a breach of the ejido San Jorge, located toward the town of Atil.
In the scene personnel Expert Services of the PGJE up shell casings from AK-47s rifles known as the "goat horn" and AR-15.
The above happens down there too often,
I think it's more free lance gun crews down that way(Altar-Tubatama) The new chief in Altar is no help at best (the whole department is rotten)

Hey Sub, if you're going to quote me in your signature, then please find a way to establish that the last few words are your own. You taking something I wrote and twisting it to suit your own agenda is not kosher. At least add quotations or otherwise own your own editorial content at the end.
There was a reported shoot out on the road from Sonoya to PP (km post 32) today with a police and ambulance convoy that was headed to PP to give medical attention to a suspected gunman from last nights ambush and shoot out at the Circle K in Sonyota. The gunmen did take away the wounded man. None of the police or ambulance attendants were injured.
Did anyone see anything?

Sadly, this looks new- take a look at the website Anita posted.
This is new. Yesterday a shooting occurred in Sonoyta. Today the gunman was shot by authorities. He wasn't killed (don't know if he has since died). As his injuries were very serious and he needed immediate attention, he was brought to Penasco for treatment. As a precaution checkpoints were immediately set up on the highway at the entrances to Penasco and Sonoyta. I went out and drove the highway to make assure myself of the way it's being handled. The military checkpoints were only inspecting some vehicles and Americans were passing without incident. A guard was placed outside the clinic as well. I would've posted sooner but my car overheated from the quick drive to Sonoyta and back. Crap.
