My secretary was down in RP this weekend. Her car was stolen from in front of the condo complex she was staying in in Las Concahs on Saturday. The vehicle was recovered in Sonoyta at a checkpoint and returned to R.P. However, the police are refusing to release the vehicle back to her without payment of $3,000.00. She does not speak Spanish and it made things difficult. she stayed in RP until last night and shuttled back to Phoenix. Police still have car. She did not have Mexican Insurance but i don't think that justifies $3,000.00. They are not saying what the fee is for. She contacted the US Consulate, they said just get a Mexican lawyer. Is there anyone on the list serve that can help? If so, please call me at my office - Geoff Fish 602-200-8183 or email me privately and i can pass your name to her. She does not have much money and is very stressed out - email is [email protected]

Any help appreciated. Rosie - i gave her the tourism number thinking maybe they can help. If i was down there i would've done things different, but she just didn't know what to do.

thanks

geoff
Stuart
$3000 dollars to get your own vehicle back after it was stolen?? Sheesh! Are you sure it's not 3000 pesos? Perhaps to cover the towing and impound fees? That's not unreasonable and would be about what you'd pay here in the US. I'd try to get that clarified first. Granted, it still sucks, especially after having your vehicle stolen. She's one of the 1st I've heard of whose car has actually been recovered.

Unfortunately, the rate of auto theft in Penasco seems to be increasing substantially. No, I won't <beat dead horse smiley here> go on about the Ford truck thing, but there seem to be an increasing number of vehicle theft reports here. And that's only from folks that know of the forum and come here; I can't imagine what the real overall rate is.

Hopefully, Rosie will chime in and might be able to shed some light on and help with this. $3000 USD sure ain't helping support tourism!!

Update - My secretary has spoken with Rosie who is assisting in getting the car released. Apparently, my secreatary already gave the clerk $1,000.00 US cash - she doesn't have a receipt and therefore that money is all but gone. Rosie has arranged the impound fee and hopefully the car will be out of impound by today - However, it still steams me that my secretary is out the extra $1,000.00. I know its her fault for not getting a receipt, however, she is a young nieve person who was in a state of panic, not speaking the foreign language and didn't know what to do. Apparently, they gave her until tommorrow (thurs.) to come up with the rest of the money. I think many of us would've handled things differently, but i understand why she did what she did. She does have the name of the clerk that she gave the money to and i told her to make some sort of complaint, but i don't really expect that to go anywhere.

Thank You Rosie for your help.
jerry
You should post the clerks name (after getting the car back)

It's sad that it happened....with my limited knowledge of the language, I've always been grateful that the one time I ran into any kind of problems, I knew someone to call for help!!!

BTW, I've always wondered about the effectiveness of the "rent-a-cops"....err...the security at the entrance to Las Conchas....I have never been stopped or questioned whenever I've driven in. I think they're only there to stop renters from coming in with atv's....
Casa Alina
Why would the L C guards stop you? Most people stop and say Hi to them, get to know them. Does the police stop you from going into Cholla?
rockyptjoe
Then what is the point of the Security Booth???? Down at the Mayan, you wind up going thru 2 separate gates...and get the "third degree" to get by....I was visiting a friend who was staying there, and they actually called the lobby to verify that that person was registered!
Casa Alina
I don't have all day to explain.
GringoZona
I don't think they should stop and inspect everyone coming in and out of Las Conchas (outside of the off-roading jackasses I've seen them chase down the beach!), but it'd be nice if they had a couple of security cameras on each side. Outside of the slim chance they'd catch someone, it might be a slight deterrent. Couldn't hurt!
Seadweller
I think the gaurds at Las Conchas would do better to stop and question cars as they leave... anyone can walk in from the beach or desert and drive out with your car... if they question a would be car theif on the way in, do you think they would say "We're only here to steal a car"

Typical Las Conchas cranky person!I stopped renting there years ago because of the profound unfriendliness of the place. Must be getting ripped off on the desal. unit has made them worse...wait till the pigeon coops are finished!

Nice "professional" response....especially from someone who is in the business of renting.....you must really be busy with all the renters that are beating down your door!!

As a home owner in Las Conchas I agree that the security really doesn't do much except maybe deter a little, chase of atv's and fireworks - however, i still feel some level of comfort having them there. I do agree that they should do a better job of checking vehicles coming in and out.

Joe, I dont think the guards at Las Conchas have any authority as the road is a public road. they are just there for looks The Mayan Road is private and they would have a right to question everybody.

The guards in Las Conchas are not responsible for the condo units The condos do not pay the homeowners association fee. Technically they are on the other side of the road.

Hi Geoffrey, I'm happy to be of service, but in the interest of fairness, the way you stated things on this forum is not exactly the way they occurred according to your secretary. I do understand, though, that people make mistakes and she will certainly get her car back, I'll see to that in the morning.

Normally I would hesitate to post details, because of confidentiality, but since you've posted, there are some corrections that must be made:

1. Her car was taken by a friend of hers. She says she was unaware of this and therefore reported it stolen.

2. The friend (for some mysterious reason) left her here without transportation and headed back to the States. Unfortunately, he was drunk at the time. When he got pulled over in Sonoyta, he was driving drunk and attempting to leave this country in a car that had been reported stolen.

3. The fine for his offense would have been over $3,000 dollars, but because by then she was pleading for his release and trying to straighten the mess out, he was fined only $1,000 for his drunk driving and taking someone's car without permission. This is cheap compared to what it would have cost him in the States, and they cut him some slack.

4. Her car (which is financed, so she doesn't have title) had been impounded. She didn't know to contact me or the Visitor Assistance office, so while at the police station, she met up with a guy (someone just hanging around outside) who offered to translate for her. She was given an amount to get the car released and told that it had to be done by Thursday or she'd lose the car. I believe the deadline was invented by the bozo she met on the street, and not from anyone in an official capacity. He was lying to her...undoubtedly in an attempt to hopefully profit from her misfortune.

5. I spoke with her several times today. She has already sent me what amounts to a fraction of the amount she was cited and she'll get her car back tomorrow. She was never in danger of losing it. She asked me if I'd talked to the guy she had dealt with, and I pointed out that no, I went straight to the top.

6. Later in the day, she called the director for International Relations (a friend of mine) to ask about getting the money back for her friend's fine. When he called me to get the story, I filled him in and promised him that I would delay my trip to Phoenix until later tomorrow, just so I can be here to be extra-sure her car is returned to her.

7. You say she's "out" the $1,000 and that she should have gotten a receipt. I already explained to her that in the same way her friend wouldn't get his bail/fine money returned in Phoenix, it isn't going to happen here. It was a fair amount for a drunk driving offense. The stolen-car charge was dropped.

8. The amount she's paying to get her car back includes towing and impound as well as a fine for filing a false police report, since she dropped the stolen vehicle charge against her friend.

Like you, I hope she learns something from this...but it isn't about questioning the authorities so much as it's about keeping her keys away from drunken friends and knowing who to call next time if she hits another snag.

I'm glad you thought to have her call me, and hope that eventually word will get out and others in similar situations will just carry my number around with them...not for me, but the Visitor Assistance office (I'm a volunteer) will become much stronger as we become more known for being of service.

Rosie,

thanks so much for the info. I obviously did not know any of the details you posted. I feel a little dumb about the $1,000.00 now, knowing it was used to pay for a fine and get her "friend" out of custody rather than a shakedown. My guess is she is embarrassed and didn't want to tell me the whole truth about what happened. I will not discuss this with her however, she can deal with it herself, i won't discuss the facts you've listed above. Also, thanks so much for helping. You were the first person i thought of when she told me what happened (at least the version she told me) - I think your organization is great and if there is a way to make a contribution, i would be glad to make a one i think your service is invaluable to tourists.

I agree with you that the resolution is a fair one - especially considering the actions of her friend - live and learn i guess. I also feel better that the police where not trying to shake her down and this restores some faith in the process.

I also told her to call Fausto and appreciate any help he has given as well.

As for your kind comments on the Visitor Assistance office, thank you. One thing we always seem to run low on is small bottles of water. Our volunteers and visitors go through those like...well, like water. As we're always operating on a shoestring, donations are encouraged. We have autographed books for sale that make great summer reading (SCOTTSDALE BLUES) and author Kerry Rose generously donates part of the proceeds. It's the first novel in a series. The next one is going to be PENASCO BLUES, a murder mystery that's really quite good!

Please come by and see me next time you're in town (and if you can, buy your Mexico auto insurance from www.proalliance.com.mx)

Thank You Stuart... just so happens that Rosie (waitress at Balboas) and I spent the morning taking Roman who also works at Balboas to the San Jose Clinic... Roman hasn't much more than the shirt on his back, a one room house and a few friends... Roman for a lack of better words is mentally challenged, but he always has time to make children happy and he offers a smile to everyone he meets...

Rosie called us at about 8:00 am saying Roman was very sick and asked if we could help because neither of them had cash to pay for him to see a doctor... turns out he was severely dehydrated and his blood sugar level was at 450... we got him to the clinic and they put him on IV's to rehydrate him and also gave him something possibly insulin (don't know,I'm not a doctor) to bring his blood sugar level down to normal... (it was the best $190.00 I ever spent)

There are so many other good people here on this forum that have helped us to help others and they have also shared stories like this, to name a few (please correct me if I'm wrong) Roberto has often helped the Two Fish Ministries lunch kitchen and gathering clothing for the needy, I remember reading dmcauley bringing down and passing out an enormous amount of turkeys at Christmas, there are many more, and I take my hat off to all of you and I wish that you would share more of these wonderful stories of helping someone just because you can....

On another note... my good friend Blanca Soto just stopped by this evening for dinner, Blanca is the Director of "La Esperanza Para Nueva Vida" Community Center and we were discussing ideas of putting together a facebook page to bring more awareness to the center and all that they do for the community... we also discussed organizing some sort of event to raise money for the community center... if any one would like to help with donations to the center please contact Harold Tuttle a.k.a. trade on this forum... Harold can tell you more of how and where to send your cash donations... or you can contact me and we can meet at the center with material donations such as food or clothing, and frankly just about anything can be put to good use...

Thank You All...

That's a lot of water, and we could sure use some if it's available. You know, I never really mention what we need because there are so many charities (like yours) that are more directly involved in helping those who truly have nothing. Our efforts are geared more towards helping promote tourism or lending a hand once they're here. Nevertheless, we do wind up needing things to keep going, and water is one thing that we need a lot of.

Quick story: We sometimes get water bottles donated by local businesses. Today I saw a couple of little kids running around the office and I noticed that it looked kinda funny that they were drinking from bottles that were labeled Blue Zebra!

Let me know if you guys still have a couple of those bottles...

I ran into a guy last week who had a problem, and the first thing I said was "go see Rosie"!! You're the greatest, and one funny lady I might add!! I'm glad everything worked out okay. Live and learn, indeed!! Mark, would something like an arts and crafts sale just before the holiday's work as a fundraiser?? I have an idea, but will start another thread on it.

Now I loved this story, and I would love to hear any and all stories that people want to tell about helping and contributing to the community. Maybe that could be a new thread and Seadwellers story be the first story in the thread. It would be quite refreshing to read stories like that and then maybe others will cough up their good stories to inspire the what is the number of readers on this forum? We can create a better world and community with these stories. My first story of helping in Puerto Penasco is small, no doubt, but on our second visit a month ago, my husband and I met at Mary's on the Malecon one of the volunteers that goes to Colonia Invasion to feed families. We talked a lot about it in our five trips to Mary's in one week and were able to contribute to the work there. I, for one, would love to hear all the "feed people" stories. My husband and I are involved in Chihuahua in women's artisans cooperatives and hunger projects. We are sooooo looking forward to sailing in Puerto Penasco. But we won't be able to resist the service projects there.
