If you have pets, especially dogs, please be aware of the fact that Peurto Penasco has gone back to electrocuting 'pest' dogs and cats through genital probes! Therefore, if your pet, especially dogs, run loose and off leash and do not return to you when you call them, they may be picked up by the city's dog catchers. Be aware!
rockyptjoe
Who are you kidding...Penasco has dog catchers?  They would spend every hour of the day and night rounding up strays in town if they did!

I doubt seriously that Penasco would go out of it's way to antagonize tourists!

And if you were possibly referring to our own residednt "dog" on here....he has been very well behaved as of late!!!:moon:

They do and have a dog pound too.
Seadweller
Joe they do have dog catchers and they have been taking the dogs to Nancy at the Animal Adoption center... but I haven't heard anything about them being cruelly destroyed as gunnar mentioned...

Gunner must of had a few drinks before he posted, check his spelling.

Well, they must have about 1 dog catcher for every 50,000 stray dogs in Penasco!!!:stir:

Although Mark, I will admit that I'm seeing fewer strays around town then I remember a couple of years ago.....probably somewhat of a result of fewer tourists in town feeding them scraps....

re. caution

The dogs with red collars are taken to a local animal adoption agency, when there is space; otherwise, the original statement stands, as barbaric as it is.

The police shocked the hell out of my brother in laws tallywacker to get him to talk so it doesn't surprise me that they use it on animals.

Ladyjeeper, mistreatment of any animals is uncalled for, I cant even kill a mouse. I dont know what they used to inject the dogs and cats with but I understand it was extremly a long and painful death. if they are electrocuting the animals it may be no worse than our electric chair.10 years ago I invited a contractor from San Luis to fish with me out at 51 we caught 3 black sea bass and he started pouring tequila in their eyes and I about knocked him overboard.
Ladyjeeper
I can't kill anything either. What was the purpose of tequila in the eyes? This thread is really bumming me out.......

To be mean to an animal thats already suffering and thats what he was drinking.
Wood Spinner
They used to use either pentathol or phenobarbital (? Sp) and neither of them was slow or painful. The animal just went to sleep. This is a fact as I worked many years for a Veterinarian. I believe the cities used a vacuum chamber and I know nothing about that method. I would have to think it also had to be humane.
Ladyjeeper
A$$hole! El va a quemar solo! That's all I got to say! That just burns me up!

Maybe in the states but I think somebody caused a big ruckus about what they were using. If it were that simple why wouldn't they still be doing it ? It has to be easier than probing for a wet spot to conduct electricity.
Ladyjeeper
OMG! Now I need mind bleach!!!!! :-(((((((((((
AZ ROB
I hate to see any cruelty to any animal. but to see all the animals that are starving and dieing in the streets that tears me up more. Somebody has to do somthing or disease will start to spread from the decay of these animals. So what is better a controled means of thinning the heard or going the other way and cause many more problems?
rockyptjoe
Rob....I'm seeing fewer strays around Penasco then there were 2 or more years ago.... There are a couple of people that have been trying to help with adoption centers, and I believe there used to be some vets that came down from the states to spay/neuter.....don't know if they still do. It was always very sad to see the rv park strays that were fairly well fed during the cooler months, and then see them starving during the summer when most of the gringos stayed home. With the depressed tourist business, now it's been year round that they are starving.
Ladyjeeper
Back in the day in Playa Miramar trailer park, we fed a big ole orange tom we named TC, (trailer cat). We fed him for around 3 years or so. We came down one time and he was just gone! I asked at the office but they hemmed and hawed and said they didn't know..... Now I knew they knew because that cat had been there for so long. I still remember yelling and crying at Arturo and he looked so uncomfortable..... He was a cool cat.....
gunnar
The city at one time used humane injection as they do in the states. They now say they 'have no money' for the medicine.
Roberto
I heard that a local dentist was charging 90 cents or so per animal?

Who are you beachboy? The new judge and jury. For you to say there is no truth here really pi$$e$ me off. I beleive what gunner says, Roberto I am sure did here about a dentist helping out. Ladyjeeper didn't say anything wrong at all and in my case my brother in law was caught with 8800 rounds of high caliber ammo and was tortured. I cant prove they tortured him but I do have the newspaper article from when he was caught. I would put it on here but its none of your business. We all dont have white anglo saxon protestant inlaws. You should be waterboarded or pranced around naked.

thank you all for your responses. My aim was to raise awareness re. the cruelty visited upon stray cats/dogs as wellas the occasional 'pet', should it be caught and... I have no wish to engage in any political diatribe. Awareness, education and caring people will eventually bring about a reversal in means of 'dispatching' of helpless animals.

roberto: As for the dentist in town who you heard was charging .90 or so...probably Dr. Soccoro. She is also currently head of Penasco's 'Health Department and has control over how the animals are put down.

Do what you want with the dog:thumbsup:, but think twice about the "naked" part, there are innocent people to think of... Oh, what's wrong with having a W.A.S.P. inlaw, or better yet, what's right about it?:-?
