Manny's Cantina on the Mirador has closed....and is up for sale.

The Tequila Factory is staying open.
Mentiras y Traición
Whoa! Changes. Glad the Tequila Factory is staying open though!
Terry C
As in Manny's Beach Club?
Dezracer
WOW...i thought is was strange that it had a huge sign blocking the road that said "CLOSED"
Roberto
Wow, Manny's was THE place for many years. Who can't recall the elbow to elbow crowds. I had tourists ask me several times recently "What's the big deal about Mannys, it's dead there."
Stuart
Very sorry to see it go! Spent many, many nights in Manny's and loved every minute of it. Another victim of the economic/Mexico slowdown. Hopefully, someone else will buy it and it will live on, but it's got to be tough to make it when your only business these days seems to come one month a year and an occasional holiday here or there.

And yes, just outside Manny's on the beach was the 1st time I was ever approached by the Black Widow!

One and the same....
PitiquitoRosy
You gotta realize that Manny's Beach Club took a hard hit when the trailer parks in the Mirador were evacuated. Those people always stopped by for happy hour and dinner. Selling to those shysters that never even proceeded to build just made things harder for the existing businesses. Add to that the economic warfare we've been dealing with and the media attacks and there you go.
Encanto
Wow, this is too sad. I Love Manny's and all of the great people that work there.
PitiquitoRosy
Yep, they're gone. I frequently stop by to shoot the bull with Manny and hope he gets a buyer soon.
joester
is the Pit (Sammy's) still open?
I liked their upstairs patio being such a close stumble from PDO - nice place to watch a sunset with
an inexpensive pina colada...or 3
PitiquitoRosy
You guys would be surprised to know the number of places in this town I've never been to or even heard of. This would be one of them. Anyone care to enlighten me? I'm a true creature of habit. Everyone thinks that I know everyone...in reality I simply go only to the places where I know people. It's an optical illusion. What is Sammy's? Hmm...must I go exploring?
rockyptjoe
Rosy, I think he's referring to the Pithaya....

From what I've seen the last couple of months, the upstairs bar has not been open much. The little bar downstairs has. Maybe the PDO regulars can pipe in.
PitiquitoRosy
Oh! Now I get it. I was at an AMPI event upstairs over a year ago and found the place pleasant enough. Mel150 and I stopped in to the downstairs bar this last summer and found that they had no ice and after two beers apiece, they ran out of beer! It was hot and muggy out there anyway, so we moved on.

I prefer a bit more comfort in my old age, although I can be suitably distracted if there is something fun going on...
Ladyjeeper
Don't get me started guys.......

Evacuated is not the word, evicted is the word! So many nights of walking...OK....staggering home from such fun..dancing and drinking........Kids and adults all having a great time together. Singing Sweet Home Alabama and Amarillo by Morning and a thousand other songs together!!!! Going to Manny's for breakfast because it was cheap and I was too lazy to cook! Getting in a fight over a pink ball cap(Don't ask LOL!......)Hearing a million different pick up lines over the years and laughing at all of them. What a landmark... I watched them build it in the 70's..... And add on to it.... ARGH!!!!! Yea, I have stories.....Oh, the memories......
Mentiras y Traición
Yea. Sad.
RPChar
Joe,
I am crushed to hear that Manny's has closed. Whenever I tell anyone where my place is in RP, they have no clue where PDO is or where Mirador is,
but they all know where Manny's is, or should I say, was.... remember what happened the first time we went there together????
TucsonBarbie
OK Manny sharpen that pencil; how much? PowerBall drawing Saturday night
Kelney
I think Chuck should share a few of his favorite photos of the landmark....
PitiquitoRosy
I would love to see photos! In fact, send them via email to [email protected] if possible.

My memory of Manny's is of my toddler grandson (who is 18 now) going there with us and being able to order for himself. He loved fish & chips and it was #33 on the menu. He didn't talk much, but he could say "thirty twee" every time we went there to eat - and there were many, many times. When they had the band and the dancing, that place was packed. You had to get there early if you wanted a seat. How sad is it that all that is gone. It was a real landmark!
Indecomm
I will miss the old landmark myself. I agree that the closing of the trailer parks marked the end of an era. I had a trailer down there some 20 years ago and the Mirador was the place to be. Only a handful of bars left and not much business. I guess the fish market has replaced the great times we had on the Mirador.
RKYPNTJIM
THe last few months the only action seems to be the Fish Market and Changos. Changos has a great band but is rather pricey. So, what is left in the Mirador to visit on a Friday/Saturday night out dancing/drinking? I've been tempted to go to Elixer but can't handle too much 'thump' music.

Capones on Sinaloa, good food and good beer.

So if we were to go for Spring Break 2011 where are we going to party? :( I wonder if its even worth going now..Manny's was why we went before

Many places on Sandy Beach Wrecked at the Reef, Chango's, you always have the BooBar, Shark Bite, Debbies, Capones has some of the best beer in R.P. There are more than a few places still left to party and have fun
Wood Spinner
Yes The Pit is open! Serving food upstairs and drink on the beach. They have a basic egg tortilla and bean breakfast daily for $ 1.99 and it is good.
As usual a full bar and they have Indio beer. With our new space in PDO it is less than a 1 min walk for us.
We all need to go down more often, support the local economy ( not the Circle K group), Eat out more , drink more , have a good time, go out fishing on a local charter. just do what we can to support these folks and their economy. We need to think of RP as our place to go to relax and have fun at reasonable prices. If we fail to support them we will lose them. PLEASE DON'T BE A CHEAP GRINGO.
rockyptjoe
Wrecked at the Reef is moving to the old Reef Bar location. Heard that Mar Blu(restaurant below Wrecked at the Reef) was moving upstairs....don't know if they will keep both floors like the old Reef Restaurant (a few years ago).
playaperro
Wonder how many people met their wifes or husbands there?
MIRAMAR
It felt so great to be back in Penasco last weekend after a 6 week hiatus with my husband. If I were a man, Penasco would be my "mistress", but since I'm a woman, Penasco is my "Cabana Boy", and yes, I'll support it!

I can't believe Manny's is closed! WOW! That, along with the evictions, is the end of an era. But yes, the Manny's of a few years ago is not the Manny's of my college days!
rockyptjoe
Just heard that Manny's will be open for the month of March.....
Ladyjeeper
Yay!
Penasco Pirate
I spoke with Manny Jr. and Fernie this weekend...they say they are going to 'try' to open for spring break. We'll see?!? I'm hoping the slump starts to turn and Sr. decides to re-open for good!
Manny Sanchez
Its official, Manny's Beach Club will be open for the month of March.
rockyptjoe
Yeah.....there are actually people I know that miss eating over there!!!
mr.phx
Manny's Beach Club is open

^ thats good news! going to be going down there this weekend for memorial day, staying at the Granada Del Mar... Is the Mirador area even busy anymore?! If not, where is the nightlife at these days? haven't been down to RP since the PP laws went into effect.

BTW hello everyone, Im Chris
GringoZona
The Sandbar used to get pretty busy during the week, more so on the weekend, but that just recently closed. A two-story, mostly glass building just across from Manny's is consistently open, but it's mostly locals and more Mexican and hip-hop music (The Ice House, or is it Ice Box?). Manny's is great during the day, especially when there's a few sporting events on, kind of hit-and-miss at night. Most of the action is back on the Malecon; scattered bars across from Penasco del Sol on Calle 13; or Chango's near the Sonoran resorts on Sandy Beach. It's less of a wait-in-line nightlife in Penasco these days and more of a make-your-own-party atmosphere. Random patches of people here and there.

My advice is, instead of jumping from bar to bar trying to chase some elusive "scene," or the "happening spot," like back in the day, just find somewhere you enjoy that makes good drinks, plays your kind of music, make some new friends and savor the moment.
cwalsh
Sounds good. Thank you!
kazpilot25
Glad to hear that it's open. I will have to pay them a visit this weekend before it's too late.

I agree with that with the way things are here today. Granada del Mar was my favorite when I used to visit. Ground level, right on the beach, can't beat that.

If you seek a place that is rockin like in the old days, sorry, but that is not the norm any longer. Dead days are Monday through Wednesday with things picking up Thursday through Sat night. Sunday is sometimes OK, prolly good with the holiday.

Nearby in the Mirador, the Ice Box (the glass place that used to be MOAB burger joint) has had the most activity in the Mirador as described above. Late night and rockin, inside and in the streets, mainly locals. Worth a look

Pink Cadillac in the Mirador has been open sporatically on weekends but not much activity.

Newly opened by Jill, former owner of the Sandbar, is Pinky's down stairs at the pool in Pink Cadillac. Stopped by there and it looked like the old Sanbar and Black dog crowd.

Hooters toopless club, the old Blue Zebra topless club is righ there also.

Check out Mannys while you are walking the Mirador, might get hoppin.

You can stroll down Sinaloa to Capones, about 5 blocks. Varied menu, varied beers. American style bar, sports on multiple TVs, Oldies music playing and sometimes loud drinking going on. Probably the most popular place for Gringos these days.

End of Calle 13 I like Max's and the Sunset Cantina. You can walk the 100 yards between the two. Max's has a nice laid back atmosphere and good food with a nice band playing Thursday thru Sunday. EAt inside or out. The drummer, Ruben, is one of the best you will ever see, and if you are lucky the waitress, Julianna, will sing. Usually has a good crowd of locals and visitors. WiFi and free Vonage calls for customers. Thursday is half price chicken wings and it is often mobbed by locals.

Sunset Cantina, next to Max's is owned by the Shark Bite people, nice atmosphere and they have had a really good guy playing guitar and singing a nice selection of songs. Often there will be local girls here. There is a restaurant downstairs that will serve up in the bar, never tried it.

Nearby to Max's is the Barra Vieja, a local joint that starts hoppin after midnight. Live band, tequila and dancing. Ya gotta try it. Entrance is next to Kino's market and there is not much signage. You'll think you are in the wrong place.

There is a new local joint opened on Calle 13 that I have not gone to yet. When they are open the street is jammed with parked cars. It's upstairs across from Chulas topless joint, you will hear the music from the street.

Bryan's on Fremont right hand side toward La Conchas is an American style sports bar with decent food, a nice atmosphere, and always sports going on 5 or 6 big screens. Prime Rib special on Friday nights but go early.

Relax and enjoy.

Thank you Roberto! i heard Baja Cantina was super busy during sprink break.. Last time i was down there for memorial day two years ago that was the case then also, i guess i will just have to wait and see for myself, But i appreciate all the info everyone!
Roberto
Yeah, you can do a bar crawl from the hotel to the Baja one evening. Hope you don't get stuck at Hooters!!
GringoZona
Yes, we stayed across from Baja Cantina during Spring Break, it was pretty busy. Had to scare off a few wandering kids who thought our pool/jacuzzi was public. They made a big deal about BC reopening for Spring Break, so it's doubtful if it'd still be open. And thanks for the info on Pinky's, Roberto! Do they have horseshoes in the back, like at the old Sandbar?
Roberto
No report on the horseshoes. Lo siento !
InkaRoads
no horse shoes for pinky's but they have started the tournament at Pitaya on wednesday, Roberto are you sure that Jill was the owner of Sandbar? I thouth it was Joe and Barb from Scottsdale.
yola

Well since I do not know Jill that is second hand information from me. Someone told me Jill was behind the bar working.

Hey Just wanted to let everyone know there is a labor day weekend special @ Manny's Beach Club:
All you can drink for $15 Dlls. from 8pm to 1am. Fri & Sat only.

Hope to see all you guys there! :)
GringoZona
yeah, may want to start a new thread for that special. if a person is unfamiliar to forums (and you always want to assume your reader is not as web savvy as yourself), chances are they're only going to read the first entry or page.

I also put this in the "pictures" section-- a photo of Manny's from Google Earth's Panoramio photos taken in 2004
