Started work on Walmart today

Looks like they started breaking ground on Walmart (or it may be Bodega Aurrera, a Walmart subsidiary in Mexico) today. It is across Benito Juarez from Santa Fe Market as you come into town. Lots of people lined up looking for work. I have mixed feelings about bringing one here. May be good for jobs and I like seeing movement again but it will hurt some smaller businesses - and I just don't like Walmart in general.
Terry C
Jim, I agree with you on Walmart. Should not be there IMO. Just like I won't go to Circle K there.
Esperanza
Have to agree with the both of you. Progress is great, but I remember how I felt when I saw the Burger King in PP after many years absence.
Ladyjeeper
Oh, so that's what that was. I wondered why so many people would be standing around in the freezing cold at 7:30 in the morning as I started home this morning! Yea, I don't shop at the circle K's there either and I will NEVER eat at the Burger King! Grrrrrr!
AZ ROB
BOOOO I really hoped that the Walmart rumor was just that....I don't shop at Walmart in the states I'll be damned if I will shop at one in Rocky Point...I hope this will not hurt the small local economy as they will sale at a loss untill all the competition is gone...

We had a go round about this some time ago and I got hacked pretty bad because of my thoughts on this one. So here we go again.

At the risk of being chopped up and fried, I'm sayin YEAH to having a store with a good selection of decent items and and a decent price. So it happens to be WalMart, I don't care. The local people deserve a better selection and a better price. Sorry but Super Ley and Coppel and the few other clothing and general merchandise stores, just don't cut it. Crappy selection, poor quality and many times high prices. Have you ever checked prices at Coppel? They are ripping the people off badly with realtively easy credit and monster prices. Numeros and their two family owned sister stores seems to buy whatever they can get cheap, all from CHINA, so don't bother bashing Wally on that one in this instance. I love the way they arrange the products on the shelves too. You will find ALL aerosol products together, insecticide, air fresheners, etc. You know you usually cannot buy dishwashing detergent for a dishwasher in Penasco? I could go on.

Some say it will really hurt the small local stores, but I think very little. They will be buyng stuff at Walmart to resell. They exist in the neighborhoods for convenience, most folk here don' t have a car ya know. It's llike the US was 100 years ago, lots of little neighborhod stores within walking distance of housing. I won't cry if Coppel and Super Ley go away personally.

I've been in Wal Mart stores in Hermosillo, Mexicali, and Nogales. Clean, good selection and good prices. My Mexican friends deserve that.

So, hate WalMart all you want and shop in the US before you come down to avoid Walmart because you already know you won't find what you want here at the price you want to pay. But is that OK for the Mexican people and the rest of us residents? I buy almost 100% of what I need here in Penasco.

Blast away !!

Clipity clop, clilpity clop, neeeeiigh.

This is what happens when you stay out till 3 in the morning Roberto. In a sense you are right. When I had the lumber yard I never expected customers to pay me more than they would pay at Home Depot. It will break a lot of businesses if they cant figure out how to compete. A year or 2 ago the Bank of Walmart was approved in Mexico and if they put one in Rp they probably will teach the other banks about customer service.

My point is that the locals should not have to pay, in money and crappy stuff because the businesses can't figure out how or have no motivation to provide decent goods and service. You are so right about the local banks and you are just jealous about the 3AM stuff, and I said I didn't get to sleep until 3.

Regardless of what people may think of Walmart....but I have to agree with Roberto....that the people deserve better then what Super Ley has become. Not impressed with their meats, and even their vegetables. The last time I was there, they had no limes.....what is Mexico with lime??? I was impressed when they originally opened....but as time went on....I'm shopping less and less there. They stack so much stuff in the aisles, you can even move around. The lines are awful at certain times. Aren';t they associated in some way with Safeway??? I've also been in Coppel....unbelievable prices.....how can the locals afford to shop there?
Ladyjeeper
Me too, I went to Coppels just to check it out and was horrified to see a cloth purse for 60 dollars American! Cloth! I beat feet out of there......Never again!
lagrimas85
Coppels is popular because of their easy credit policy. Almost as easy as a Rent a Center is here. Some people just must not be able to analyze the final costs.
ernesto
Right on Roberto!
Stuart
Walmart is a fact of life nearly everywhere. I JUST HOPE THEY HAVE A DAMNED GOOD SELECTION OF SALTWATER FISHING STUFF!!! :veg:
bahiatrader
I don't really give a hoot!
dmcauley
Two thumbs up Roberto/ The average visitor to RP has no idea about how much money is spent on junk by the locals. Walmart is at least 2 steps in the right direction.
mexicoruss
When we go to the States (infrequent at best) we almost always visit Walmart for essentials that we cant get here. However the Walmart chain carries those items witnessed first hand in Hermosillo. So we would be saving ourselves a trip to Walmart in the States in favor of the Walmart in Mexico. Precios bajo - Siempre! Shop local Rock global!
InkaRoads
not only are the prices cheaper overall but they have the product in stock all the time, like most I don't use Super ley, other than for tequila, or Coppel, always buy from the local stores as in smaller stores and the only thing I bring from USA is money and clothes, imo if I am going to visit any place may as well buy what I need there unless I know of a particular item I might not find
Jim
Another reason that I dislike Walmart... They are not hiring local workers. They brought all the people from somewhere down South because labor was cheaper. Hundreds of poor locals have tried to get work on the project and have been turned away. They don't give a shit about the community and it's all about the bottom line for them. You guys go ahead and shop there. You won't be seeing me. BTW, I hear that it will be Aurrera, not an actual Walmart.
Roberto
They probably brought in people who have worked on their buildings before. Hard to think people would work cheaper than the meger salaries paid here. Part of those salaries will stay here anyway. I wish they gave the locals a chance. There should be more jobs when they open, but you know they will bring managers from elsewhere in Mexico. Like the Mayan and other chains.
mexicoruss
I would guess that some of the permanent employees will be former owners of their own small tiendas and I am sure they will make more working for Wally or Arrora or whoever than they did with their own store IMHO
Wood Spinner
I hate Walmart but because of warranties I do buy all my auto batteties there. Where ever I am there is a place to exchange.
Other than that verry little is spent in the store
Roberto
First post was 11/29 by Jim announcing groundbreaking. Drove by yesterday 12/29 and Three of the 4 block walls are up, steel interior suports are in, and about 1/3 of the roof steel structures are in. They were actively pouring inside the walls when I drove by, may be the slab, and pouring the bond beam on top of the block walls.

I'm betting on sooner rather than later.

There is no way around it this store will effect some of the small businesses. As the the normal habit of shopping in your own neighberhood I have to believe this will continue. In general people do not change habits. I for one know I will continue to shop in the same places I do today. Even though there is some bashing of Super Ley I still like the store partly because it employees so many locals. The employee attitude is great and they are always ready to help if you need it. Across the street, I do not go there! Produce I buy over close to La Curva and we will continue buying there. BUY LOCAL AND THE MONEY YOU SPEND STAYS IN RP AND HELPS THE LOCALS.
IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE ENJOYING PP FOR WHAT IT IS WE MUST SUPORT THE LOCAL PEOPLE.
Mentiras y Traición
I agree, Bill. I think Walmart is going to have a devastating effect on the smaller "mom & pop" stores in Penasco. What happens to Ace Hardware when Home Depot moves in...gonna be cheaper, easier to find, and for a while, a novelty...just long enough to put the little guys out of business.
El Gato
Went by the Bodega Aurrera site yesterday (Jan 25) and were amazed at how much was done just from a few days ago. Walls up (and some looked like they might be painted) and there were some workers on the roof. Looked like an April opening date might be a possibility. Of course "boxes" aren't as difficult to build. Hopefully it will make trips to the States less needed. Would prefer to do all our shopping here - hate the long drive, miss Penasco as soon as we hit the road, and would prefer to help the economy here - which from our spending we seem to do already lol
Rocky Point Rides
As of yesterday, the roof and 4 walls are completed lots of workers working, oximoron? only if use in the City of Tucson!!, in the parking lot, might be even finished by the end of February!!
Jim
It is scheduled to open towards the end of April.

On a lighter notes LOL

Things you don't want to hear during surgery:

Better save that. We'll need it for the autopsy.

"Accept this sacrifice, O Great Lord of Darkness."

Bo! Bo! Come back with that. Bad dog!

Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that?

Hand me that... uh... that uh... that thingy there.

Oh no! Where's my Rolex.

Oops! Hey, has anyone ever survived from 500 ml of this stuff before?

There go the lights again?

"Ya know, there's big money in kidneys? and this guy's got two of 'em."

Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens!

Could you stop that thing from beating; it's throwing off my concentration.

What's this doing here?

I hate it when they're missing stuff in here.

That's cool. Now can you make his leg twitch by pressing that one?!

Well folks, this will be an experiment for all of us.

Sterile schmerile. The floor's clean, right?

OK, now take a picture from this angle. This is truly a freak of nature.

This patient has already had some kids, am I correct?

Nurse, did this patient sign an organ donation card?

Don't worry. I think it is sharp enough.

What do you mean "You want a divorce?!?"

FIRE! FIRE! Everyone get out!

Oh no! Page 47 of the manual is missing!

and my own addition to this list is:

GET IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME DOC ! NONE OF THIS THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM CRAP OK !!!!

Update photos 2-9-2011

Heres a few pictures I shot 2-9-2011 on the progress of Bodega Aurrera, it is coming along nicely and we anticipate a grand opening mid to late March or early April as scheduled. It appears to be ahead of schedule and they are working 7 days a week.DSCN3683.jpg DSCN3687.jpg DSCN3686.jpgDSCN3684.jpg DSCN3688.jpg DSCN3685.jpg
