What's the difference if the bullet comes from a group of narc runners or 1 crazed gunman....a nine year old girl lies at a morgue tonight in Tucson as well as 5 other innocent people....
Look I'm not saying that this drug war is nothing to worry about...because it is. But Rocky Point is not Juarez, at least not yet. Hence there is no need to press the panic button...as the level of overall crime is still below the city that you probably live in.
My heart goes out to all the victims and their families....
I agree....dead is dead....regardless of how it happened....a lone crazed gunman or a bunch of cartel gunman....
I'm in big, bad, dangerous, Penasco right now....most of my comments were directed at someone who was poo-pooing the danger (or potential danger) in Penasco.....and trying to use violence in the states as measuring stick. I believe that Stuart's comments also had the same intent. You can have someone go off the deep end and start blasting away at a group of people....or set off a bomb to kill a bunch of people....it is not the same as the organized mayhem/violence with the cartels. It has nothing to do with body count.
Penasco isn't Juarez....yet....but it has the potential of becoming the same.....I hope it does not!!!
This topic is akin to any discussion we could have on politics or religion (which I try to avoid like the plague)...I won't convince you and you won't convince me....we have different viewpoints, or are looking through different glasses.....
We've also had posts about guns, concealed carry permits, etc.....all the usual knee jerk reactions ....would any type of gun control been able to prevent this brutality? If someone wants to kill someone, all the laws in the world won't prevent it.
Most telling line in that story? (forget the 14 headless bodies and 27 people killed the same day): At least 30,196 people have died in drug-related violence since late 2006. I'm sorry, but over 30,000 dead people is an astounding number.
Agreed, and according to Wikipedia, Crime continues at high levels, and is repeatedly marked by violence, especially in Monterrey, Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, Nuevo Laredo, Michoacan, and the state of Sinaloa. - according to Wiki
Luckily Sonora (Rocky Point) is not seeing the level of violence that other areas of Mexico are seeing. Hopefully it will remain this way. As for the violence that has been seen there, although it certainly has picked up over what it once was, seems to be comparable to the level of crime here in the states. Whether it be nonsensical murders or drug related violence.
My two cents, Im not sure why a forum for Puerto Penasco is debating and comparing issues to the USA, but, I believe that most U.S. citizens fear going to Mexico because of the information there provided, whether it be the news papers ,television , Or Forums( like this one , that is basically just for one town in Mexico). Obviously all news doesnt give all the details, maybe less info is good for tourism. You have to beleive that everyone wants to feel safe on their vacation or they will go somewhere else or stay home
Ive been visiting Mexico for over thirty years from tijuana to buenavista , & Mazatlan to Penasco. I live in the Phoenix area & visited Penasco first in I think it was 2000 With my wife & kids, hadnt arrived at the hotel before I got stopped by the Police for a bogus traffic stop & paid the officer. I left and didnt come back for 7 years, I was with two other Anglers and I had the money for our fishing trip , by myself when I was robbed by police officers for $1500.00 US dollars. I had to have money wired to me to pay for our trip & get home. I didnt come back for three years, and thats when my truck was stolen at the Penasco Del Sol Hotel in front of the security Guard Office!!!
I will never stop going to Mexico but Puerto Penasco is the only city Ive ever had a problem.
I think a solution would be if Roberto would talk to the corrupt officials & the murderers & just ask them to stop there criminal ways, and everythink should stop . That would restore faith in people like myself.

i dont think a debate is in order here. I agree with you that this info is not good for tourism and that everyone wants to feels safe when they travel.
It sounds like you have had a lot of trouble in Penasco.... Not sure why that is though. So if I take your stories and blend them with my experiences do we come out with a truer story or do we just get blah blah?
I have been here full time for more than a few years, I conduct business here and I think I am doing ok. I own a boat, I own several nice vehicles and I go in and out of town many times a day and much more on the weekend, I have not had any of this stuff jacked, or stolen.... whats the deal if it is soooo bad here why cant I have more problems? The answer is that bad news travels fast and is sexier than the truth. Go ahead and post your bad experiences in Penasco or Mexico in general, but then you have to post your crap from wherever you travel. I have traveled this country (Mexico) for 28 years. I understand the stuff that is going on but I will not play the victim. Stay alert and be aware of the stuff going on around you! If you dont It does not matter where you are you will have problems ......I am drinking a beer cooking pork and otherwise enjoying my quiet life in Mexico AJUA! Be safe and be thirsty my friends.......
I went back and read Bait and fish's previous post's, just to see if maybe this was a bait and switch post, and it appears it's not. I know that more than a few of us who have been going down for decades, and have not had the problems, or even close to what he's had in his few visits to PP. My advice would be to just stay away from this guy.:notme: I know he's a friend of your's Stuart, or appears to be, but this guy just has some bad Ju Ju for some reason.
Wow, what a string if bad luck! I have been coming to PP for almost 45 years and have only had the usual petty theft, after I left it out or unattended or forgot to lock a cabinet when I left. I've never even been pulled over in 37 years of driving........Wow!
Our family, too, Chari. Our only problems have been with an individual's character, not the town or the country. My middle son got pulled over by the police once a couple of years ago, but the dumb kid outran them and nothing ever happened. They stopped him, wanted money, and said they would take him to the ATM. He was close to the road to Las Conchas, and had a muscle car, so he took off, turned off his lights and hi-tailed it to our garage where the car sat for about a week and then we left town...he was pretty frickin' lucky that night. Notwithstanding the tongue lashing from Mom (me):duh::happens: That is about all that ever happened to us that was negative.
this is why people dont report crimes or make posts on forums like this , when they are victims , people like Kenny and others like to attack victims of crimes , they dont want to have the truth be told that will hurt their financial interest , they are the same as the ones that commit the crimes

Just how did I "attack " you? I said I went back to check your past post's to see if it was legit, and then said I thought it was. If you think that was a attack, you sure have a thin skin, or misinterpreted what I wrote.
The part about bad Ju Juj stands though, and yes, I'd think twice about hanging out with you in Mexico..LOL
I have no interests in Mexico, except to have fun..So please stop attacking me with unfounded accusations.:notme:
I would only have to point out your own self disclaimer of only half the lies are not true.
Im not going any further with this post or getting in a debate . what I stated are facts you guys can do what you want with that info
Man either your friends/guide set you up or your fish has gotten bigger.....The guy that is a owner of the roofing store on 16th in Tucson was just telling me a "robbery by the police of all their money in Rp" story last week.I felt the bullshit alarm going off...pressed him...he got pissed...and as the guys were putting the Elastek in my truck they started laughing and told me they hear the guys were ripped off at a topless bar. Hey that is bad too but you pick your locations carefully in a new town or shit happens.

Most people judge people by themselves, so I'll take that as if you didn't tell us the whole truth about how these incidents happened... That said, calling me a 1/2 a liar for unknown reasons is kind of funny, and I'll need some help with that. Just what was I lying about, that I haven't had any of the problems that you've had in PP? Actually, you inferred we were all a bunch of lier's protecting vested interest.

Yeah Jerry....probably too many $40 back room "private dances"....that does burn up the money fast!!!! Can't believe I'm agreeing with Jerry on something!

Is that all they are I have been spending way too much money on fishing lol:notme:
Read the true book...God's middle finger into the Sierra Madres". As long as the drug cartels are in control and a lot of people in Mex itself can't fight back because of fear of what will happen to them or their families, it isn't a safe place for families. We had visitors here from out of the country and a Mexican person (from Mex) told them to only cross the border with a large group of people, in daytime and NEVER take a baby there.
Bingo. Everyone in Mexico who wants "peace" has to decide whether they want to submit to the armed Cartels, or the armed Government agents...
Either scenario would make me uneasy. I'd rather simply arm myself .... ooops, that's right I forgot- you can't do that or else the government agents instantly group you with the narcos, and the narcos instantly perceive you as a threat.
The fact that children in Mexico grow up aspiring to be narcos (criminals) so that they can live the life of easy money and easy women tells me that Roberto is right- things are very different in Mexico than the US.
Just as every European serf and peasant in the Middle Ages knew first first hand- Submission to any false authority is the ultimate surrendering of freedom.
The fact that children in Mexico grow up aspiring to be narcos (criminals) so that they can live the life of easy money and easy women tells me that Roberto is right- things are very different in Mexico than the US.
Well that's not quite the way I see it anyway. It's more like you grow up and work if you can, no car, get married, have a couple of children and can't take care of them cause there is no work. Kids are hungry, need shoes, out trying to wash cars all day. There is NO public assistance. Friend of a friend says you can make $1,000, just walk and carry a pack. Kids are hungry, need shoes.....love your wife dearly but she suffers with no money, CFE wants a payment....what would you do? People from the US cannot seem to understand the crushing poverty here in Mexico. "There are NO jobs" in the states usually means no jobs that pay well but Walmart or McDonalds is almost always hiring, a person can find SOMETHING. Here, No jobs means just that, none, nunca, nada, nada.
If my kids were cryng because they are hungry, I'd be packin and walkin, what would you do?
Roberto, I do agree with you, it is very different to be a tourist and come and go nth times a month or year to enjoy the place you are visiting even if it is the same place, it is very different to live and see the life as it unravels in front of you in a daily basis and understand what it is to be living in a third world country.
The fact that children in Mexico grow up aspiring to be narcos (criminals) so that they can live the life of easy money and easy women tells me that Roberto is right- things are very different in Mexico than the US.
I have no idea where you've been, but the truth is that many impoverished kids in the USA have aspired to be like some of the high rolling dope dealers in their neighborhood.
I have no idea where you've been, but the truth is that many impoverished kids in the USA have aspired to be like some of the high rolling dope dealers in their neighborhood.
Absolutely. Gonna be a big bad gangsta in the 'hood. The most idiotic thing in the world is when well-to-do white kids from the 'burbs try to act all gangsta. If they had any idea of just how stupid they look with the saggin' pants, sports jersey, and hat on sideways, talkin' like their best homeys are all from the hood and flashing gang signs. My teenage nephew stopped by this summer with the in-laws dressed and acting like this. I immediately picked his happy young ass up, gangsta clothes and all, and into the pool he went. He hasn't been back since; I can't understand why.
I have no idea where you've been, but the truth is that many impoverished kids in the USA have aspired to be like some of the high rolling dope dealers in their neighborhood.
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
Thank You Kenny. Without going too far off the rails- I've been there. Having been fortuante enough to live the "privileged" gringo lifestyle, and also having spent years in a home where the former "breadwinner" was dying of cancer while the former "Homemaker" worked as a clerk at a used car lot just to keep pasta and ketchup in the house.
and Roberto's point about desperation is also very well taken...
All of these conditions (people at the brink of desperation driven there by poverty, and kids growing up wanting to emulate "criminals") is all simply a mater of perspective.
Legality (and technicality) is the only factor that determines that someone is a criminal. If the drugs were not illegal in the north, then the cartels would not have nearly the monopoly on production that they do (because Mexico AND the US are both over-flowing with qualified farmers just looking for something to grow and harvest).
so, remove the law against dope, and every ethical person who is impoverished in Mexico (those who are doing their best to abide by the laws) could suddenly go back to work growing, manufacturing, and shipping with no fear of legal retribution.
Roberto's example of the deperate father being bribed into carrying the backpack would fly out the window, because:
1) The cartel guys could carry thier OWN backpacks, since the shipping and logistics would be allowed out and into the open
2) The desparate father could get a LEGITMATE job growing product (or whatever)
this, in turn, increases the global supply of dope, thereby reducing prices in the free market. As prices fall, addicts will (naturally) consume more and probably drop dead sooner, leaving a market flush in available supply countered by increasingly diminished demand over time...
and the "problem" eventually solves itself.
The drug trade is a perfect example of how legitimate commerce yields benefit to humanity- only it is bastardized by those who seek to impose their morality over others, and by those who wish to maintain control of those things which are uncontrollable (like human nature)....
And no, I've never done drugs, nor would I ever choose to (except maybe when I'm old and bored :) ), but I'd be the first to invest in the stock of a legitimate street narcotic company once the laws were changed...
Just how did I "attack " you? I said I went back to check your past post's to see if it was legit, and then said I thought it was. If you think that was a attack, you sure have a thin skin, or misinterpreted what I wrote.

He must be A CONSERVATIVE Eh Kenny ( I dont know where you guys get the smileys, but this one would be stirrin the pot)
OK I'll try.....Gee, I wonder why we haven't heard from Kenny or Jerry defending their fearless leader Obama.
I was waiting for the Bush did it thing, thank you.
Now just suppose that YOU KENNY were trying to stop an oil leak on the bottom of the ocean. Would you?
Gees liberal, wake up.

Maybe you guys want to give me crap also but this guy is saying nothing that should invoke any anger from this forum.
Those of us who frequent RP regularly don't have the fear level of occasional visitors to a different country anymore and don't take the cops crap.
RP is getting to be safer every day and the cops don't seem to be robbing the gringoes lately yet we all know this guy isn't spouting propaganda, only experience.
I warn visiting friends of the dangers of walking the streets late and where to avoid but not every one is as savvy as us regulars,
I read an interesting article from a frequent visitor in the RP times today and she declared uniquivically that there are no drug cartels in Penasco. This is good information for all of you folks, yes Russ, who wear blinders and seem to think that Penasco is the same as 20 years ago, but it's not, and it will never again be as safe as it once was. This is progress folks and it started w/ the condos and all the stuff that big money drags in
Who would have thought twenty years ago that calle trece would be the center of porn in one way or the other. I get tired of the hustling pimps selling there wares even when I'm with my wife and grand kids. My nickels worth.

That's hardly a attack Dan... As far as my joking about his bad Ju Ju, and not wanting to hang out with him because of it, well to bad if he can't take a little ribbing.
If you noticed he was also being a smart ass with his ending comments about Roberto, so it's not as if he didn't have a agenda.
I think a solution would be if Roberto would talk to the corrupt officials & the murderers & just ask them to stop there criminal ways, and everythink should stop . That would restore faith in people like myself.
Once more this guy is a victim, and instead of the perps being all the currupt cops, etc in PP, it's little old me.:D
There were two things, and besides the condos that made it clear to me things were going down hill. One the kid's started selling chicklets, and two, strip joints on calle 13.
Not sure why or if I got slammed boy, but you may want to reconsider your view of me, just sayin it as I see it as a full timer not a bystander....

That statement shows that maybe you've got huevos, but sounds like it could be a threat Russ, All I am saying Russ is sometimes you sugarcoat things too much. I know it is your love of Mexico speaking but sheesh, there's some nasty stuff been going down.
Kenny, ded you see all the Rif raf coming off the trains while they were building? Crime went way up. Calle trece is out of control and people hardly walk the streets w/family any more. Even the chicle vendors don't let the kids go there. I am not trying to offend anyone, only defending strangers rights on this forum.

I went back and read some and skimmed others of our bad Ju Ju's guy's previous threads before I made the statement that it seemed to be a legit post, and he knew Stuart. I surmised he was a big boy (sorry Dan LOL)and after his shot at Roberto, and I thought a little ribbing wouldn't bring him to tears...Like I said, his parting shot at Roberto showed that he was no innocent who was just here to tell his story again.
Ask Chuck especially, but the rest of our friends over in the parks too, how the rif raf that came to town changed their lives.
OK, I've stopped laughing once more, and wiped the tears from my eyes... "Boy" Russ? Are you drinking or what? Oh no! Here it comes again.:rofl:I had to read it twice, and check the author three times before it sank in. Oh no, not again.
I consider all on this forum to be my friends(since cactus left), even Russ, I've heard nothing but good things about him. Like all families there are often diferent points of view and I express mine freely
Well, I'll post up here with some trepidation.....I have seen so much change since 1966....I was told quite recently that I should write a book, after telling a few of you some of my stories at one of our get-togethers..... When the money came in, it took off....I watched as the Mirador died, bawled like a baby when I was forced to move, watched as crime went up and now, these shootings.....All of you know that I am single and travel alone. I have changed 2 things about that in the last couple of years. I don't drive in Mexico at night any more, (well except this last time) and I was recently browbeaten by a few of you, you know who you are, into getting a Mexican cell phone so if I get stranded between Sonoyta and PP, I can call for help. I am still not afraid but I am mindful of my surroundings and don't go where I don't belong. If I go out at night, I am with other people and never walk anywhere. I am not a full time resident but come often enough to be able to have a feel for it. I still feel safe enough to come but I AM worried a little about what may happen in the future. This paradise has been a part of my life since I was 8 years old! 45 years! (I can't believe it either!) I don't know how I could live without it. But, for now, I feel safe enough to continue doing what I always have. My non Rocky Point loved ones have been giving me grief this last year and I just tell 'em, I'll let you know when it isn't safe anymore. I'll know.......
The oscar meyer car broke down by my shop 10 years or so ago.i actually got to set in it....it smelled like mustard because the driver would give out samples at some stops...yellow mustard ...the horror!
Well frankly Cholla i think the show should be called the Jerry and Kenny show with special guest Roberto

Dm, you me,kenny, happy,Az,Ernesto,Pero,Stewart and Roberto were all calling bs on the "now is a good time to buy" crowd years ago and i can tell you we helped steer people away from buying 300k 2br. pigeon coops at the end of the boom.Prices have hit the floor and now really is a good frigging time to buy.
On the guy that claims he was robbed on every visit i just caught the faint scent of bullshit in the evening air.If wrong I'm sorry(hey i have two great fake crime stories myself). If you read old posts you will see I warned people about Tubutama/altar before the shoot out. I just don't think we're in to much jeopardy at this time.

Dm, I do not think I sugar coat things. I think I have a different perspective on things. I know there is crime here, I know that there are bad drivers here and you have to be careful when out and about....I know all of those things that you think I dont know, but...I do not see things from a tourist POV, I see them as a native or as nearly native as you can get as a white person in a a Mexican town. When I go to Phoenix or Tucson I do so because I have to not because I want to have a tourist day so I guess I must be wrong not to check out if something bad has happened the night before, or a week ago or whatever - something that may change my view of going there. I assume that if it is a city with human beings in it that sometimes bad things will happen and maybe if I am in the wrong place at the right time something bad could happen to me. I think that is true of anywhere you go where there are humans present. The entire world is slipping into a decay that has been worsening everyday for many years. It is sad and there is no doubting it. To say you feel good and safe where you LIVE is not sugar coating, it is a feeling you have because you know whats up where you live. Many of my friends feel safe in Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, heck even LA. There would be some that would say they are crazy for that feeling. I say they should be able to feel the way they want to. They know what their surroundings are. A guy in South or West Phoenix may not feel the same as a guy in Scottsdale but hey its all relative eh?
It is true I am a positive promoter of the town, the place , the world where I live. When I do tours here I dont take people to where bad people do bad things, I show them the positives that Penasco has to offer. It is so easy to go negative yet I do not, cannot see what benefit it does for anyone.
For people out there who think only bad things happen in Mexico....I think maybe that is a little sugar coating - dont you? Stay aware, enjoy life and stop stressing so much.
Basically what I said Russ. I am a frequent visitor/ local and know what's happening. Others who frequent less often have a bigger fear factor.
This is no different to me than the shootings by the mafia in Boston while I was growing up. They were careful not to harm bistanders so as not to have more problems w/authorities
I LOVE OUR GREAT BIG DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY!!! Each and every one of you. I do, no kidding! I've always considered the majority of us "regs" that post here just that -- a family. Weird Uncle Jerry (you fit that role well, Jerry, I couldn't resist), Cousin Kenny, "Mom" Chari, Brother Joe, Cousin Russ, etc., etc. I need look no further than my own real family to know that in any family, there's gonna be disagreements. No different here. It's kinda like it's okay for my brother and I to get into a fight, but let somebody outside the family mess with my brother and he's fightin' both of us!
Speakin' of family, anybody heard from Mark (Seadweller) of late? Russ, you're his neighbor, what's up? Haven't seen him post anything for awhile, didn't answer my PM. Was just curious and wanted to make sure all is okay with him and Barb.
With all the taking shots at each other on this forum, I wouldn't be suprised if someone starts blaming the shooting on Sandy Beach Road on this forum.
I LOVE OUR GREAT BIG DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY!!! Each and every one of you. I do, no kidding! I've always considered the majority of us "regs" that post here just that -- a family. Stuart...I saw Mark and Barb last weekend. They're both doing fine....have been extremely busy...with food distribution, fishing (MArk) and that new website Mark mentioned. He hasn't been very active on FB either.
