Here is a picture from the border taken late 8/7/11 - Apparently they got flooded out at Lukeville - store and duty free still closed. Mud everywhere.

.... MSNBC reports that environmentalists have denounced Homeland Defense Secretary Michael Chertoff's for executing waivers to natural studies that has caused this flooding along the Border Fence. The fence acts like a Dam and collects the rich debris from the Organ Pipe Cactus Reserve and clogs up releases built using small wire mesh outlets.

the flooding picture at the top is from this weekend - the article is a couple of years old but clearly shows why this is happening.

rain in the desert is ... normal stuff for July and August....

Dry rivers become full of life giving waters for the thirsty Sonaran desert. Rejoice.

I made it home BEFORE the rains hit yesterday. Left Penasco before 9:00 and it looked like a lot of cloud buildup then. Had a little sprinkle outside Gila Bend. With the bridge in Sonoita under construction, you detour through the river bottom. There was water flowing under the detour, but not on the road when we went through. Audi wasn't so lucky. Talked to him at 7:00 last night; he was just outside Ajo. He didn't leave until after noon. He said he barely made it through Sonoita and used his truck to push a car through the wash and out the other side. He said at least five of the washes through Organ Pipe were ripping and traffic was stopped at all of them with people just waiting and wandering around in the road.

Leave early to avoid the storms! :desert:
