Came thru Friday about 7PM. Mexico agents wanted to see my Passport, Car registration and papers for my two dogs. Didn't check the contents of the car. Caution, if you get the red light and have dogs they will ask for papers

I stopped last week on the Mexican side to declare a new gas engine, a gas engine air compressor and a new water pump, I had my dogs, dog food and dog snacks. the agent came over looked in my pickup, never said a word about anything and went back to the office came up with a figure of 360.00 pesos, I went to the bank and paid the money and was on my way.

You are fortunate as I have been asked evry time I get the light
Esperanza
Funny, but we've been stopped a couple of times by the guy who sits on the right hand side just past the light! He's asked for our dogs' papers EVEN THOUGH we had the GREEN LIGHT! This last time, Rafael (DH who is a Mexican Citizen), basically told him FO because we had a green light and he had no right to stop us. LOL! We always carry the dogs' papers, but I guess DH was in a fiesty mood that day..LOL!

When we came through last Sept with our car loaded to the gills and our cat in his case between us we got the green light - only they took one look at our car and motioned us over to be checked. They glanced in the car briefly - had DH open the truck - which I had used as a suitcase - said, "okay, have a good trip" in Spanish. Never asked to see the cat's papers - which we actually had. I think the red/green light is a random thing - but they have the option of changing their minds if they want to. Every time we've come through they have been very nice.

The peeps on the right side are like a secondary inspection for pets.
Roberto
Red ight , Green light

The red/green light is just an automated control, randomly selecting who is to be inspected, for the convenience of the inspectors. If you get the green you can still be stopped for inspection at the discretion on the ADUANA staff. Getting the green is not a 'pass' on inspection.

I arrived at the border 6 years ago, after dark maybe 10 PM. Largest UHaul trailer available, full sized pickup loaded. I looked like an Okie headed to Cali during the dust bowl. Had prepared a sort of inventory and prices of all the stuff I had, mostly used furniture and bicycles. Ignorent of procedure I did not stop to pay and got the green and started through. Frantic waving of an armed ADUANA agent got my attention and I stopped. He opened the trailer and a bunch of junk fell out. He was jumping up and down saying I needed an importer. I said where do I pay. He walked to the side of the truck, looked around and held out his hand behind him and said "under the wire, $100" I paid and drove through !! As I was pulling out of Sonoita a vehicle behind started flashing it's lights, oh crap stopped again. It was some US folk who told me the trailer door was partially open! Some stuff probably fell out but I just headed to my new home.:cruisin::cruisin:

If you have a Chihuahua, do you still need papers? ;)

Yes, women need papers just like men, border crossing is not based on gender.

It's a male chihuahua tho...I thought if you owned a chihuahua, they would let you in w/o pet papers. (you realize I'm just messin' with you right :) )

Yea, me too with you.

Yea they will take your dog if you have no papers. My neighbor had a dog that barked all night and guess where he is living...

Crossing the border at Lukeville
On my trip to RP they didn't stop or ask a thing south bound at Lukeville AZ. But coming back the US ask for passports and asked if we were bringing in any waepons of mass destruction. I laughed and said no.
Then asked about my miniture french poodle in the back seat. I said she was a Chihuahua going into Mexico and now she turned into a french Poodle coming back.
He laughed and said have a great day.

What papers do y'all usually bring to RP for your pets? We bring our two dogs every time with out any problems. We bring their shot records. We hand them to the border guards with our passports and they don't ever look at them. We have never been questioned about them going into MX. I am aware that you are supposed to bring some sort of certificate from your vet that is good for ten days and is $90 per pet. I hope they don't start asking for those papers.

I keep updated shot records and that's it. Never had them ask for anything and even if they did I doubt if they can understand the information. I also heard about the Vet. certificate but called Lukeville and they told me it wasn't needed.

They really checked the pet paper work close on the way South today. They also said no beef allowed ..period... personal amounts of chicken and pork or it would be taken too...not sure what that amount is....also on the dirt, meal type food (think Alpo dry) If you get the left lane they check closer

Thanks for the update. What papers did you show them?
Kea
How closely are they now checking the date of the health certificate? Or do they only check vaccination record?

We only get the health certificate once a year at their annual vet visit, but we travel to Peñasco several times a year. They've only asked for our pets' records at the border once & at that time they didn't seem concerned that the health certificate was about 6 or 7 months old. (I believe it's "supposed" to be less than 72 hours old?)

Thanks
jerry
Think you are ok...but the guy even made sure the dogs answered to the names on the certificate...

Anybody ever take a cat? I thought all I needed was proof of shots - what's the health certificate?
Kea
There's a form you can request at the vet when your pets travel internationally. Although I think we were able to get a "cheaper?" one because Mexico didn't require as complex a one as other countries. Not really sure. We just told the vet where we were going and they filled out a form (and charged us for it - but I don't remember how much). I've read that Mexico requires the certificate, but as I mentioned, ours usually isn't as current as it should be. But we do get a new one each year when they get their vaccines.

Our little dog will be parking at anyone approaching our car, regardless of what name you call her. Our older dog (14) may respond to his name or may decide he prefers his nap. He's pretty mellow these days. They are total opposites.

Just ask your vet for a document that shows the shots and dates. Mine has a picture of my dog on it as well
rockyptjoe
Most vets charge an arm and a leg for the actual form....mine wanted something like $40 and that was a few years ago.....I've just carried a copy of the shot record....and mine has the tag from the county....
garyd
I didn't pay extra, it just came with the shot documents for the tags

My dogs carry Mexican Passports and never have a problem, no pictures for obvious reasons 3-13-2012 8;04;00 PM.jpg3-13-2012 8;04;30 PM.jpg

At our vet in Rocky Point, it's set up alot like a people passport, about 10 pages in it, for the dogs name, address, they're picture and a couple pages for the shot stickers and vet signatures. You can see, the first date was in 2007, and the last date is 2012, it makes it easy.

Melissa, I am moving back to Puerto Penasco after the 21st of this month, when I get down there I will see if the vet still has any and will pick one up for you.

That would be awesome! Thanks, Bill! I actually received my new passport in the mail yesterday (3rd in my lifetime) and thought about taking apart my old one to make one for my gatita.

Sorry to hear about Fabiola - I hope she's doing well. Is that why you're moving back full time?

Melissa, a couple weeks ago, I went to see my dogs vet and asked about the pet passports. He said he changed suppliers and didn't have anymore, so I went to VIPets on Simon Morua (Ace Hardware Street) and asked if they had them and they do. He wouldn't sell me one though, he explained his supplier gives him one for each vaccination he purchases, so he gives them away when you vaccinate your pet. VIPets is the building painted like a cow.

Thanks Bill!
