I have noticed that a lot of Americans are either staying at their resort for the weekend or they are not traveling as far for nightlife. They are going to Changos or the Reef. When we were there in October, my wife's friends didn't leave their resort except to pick up shrimp from the Malecon. And we are not old folks. We are all late 20's early 30's.
Roberto
The critical factor is numbers of people. I am guessing that visitors from the US are about 25% or less of 4 years or so ago. Mexican visitors are growing but they are big on mainly Semana Santa and summer time vacations. You can redecorate, do theme nights, that does not generate customers in the streets. Might increase market share but a share of a very small number, not enough to make a go of it. There are several markets, mainly: permanent residents and visitors and divide them each into Nationals and US folk. Each of the 4 segments probably are not attracted by the same things.

badfish...the condo crowd....generally... lays low...nothing wrong with that....the idea that mexicans don't like American culture is bullshit and racist...everyone likes our crappy materialistic vision.....Th

Yeah well most Americans are staying at those condos compared to the RV parks, hotels like Baja Cantina, and Fiesta de Cortez. We still stay at GDM on the Mirador. Those resort condos are to far from Mexico for our liking.

I don't see a edit on Jerry's post, where did the "sucks" come from? Are you messing around with what he actually said, or what?..... EDIT>>> Maybe not, I just looked and my edit is not showing.

The critical factor is numbers of people.

That's it, for the most part it really is that simple. The reasons there are not more people is multiple, and could use a thread of it's own for a discussion.

You did notice that I noted the the edit notice was missing after I edited mine.... Say that fast..LOL.. Sorry fish, I guess Jerry thought saying sucks sucked, and changed it, but it didn't show that he had.

Yep Kenny I decided I suck for saying the Pigeon Coopers suck...but it was too late

If it's anything that I took personally it is your GENERALIZATION of the gringos who used to, or still do go to Penasco and also to Manny's! And what's wrong with 80's rock? It may not be my taste in music....but at least it is music!!!:moon:

You should read my sig....I think that it applies here....on opinions....that is, and your take on business models that do or don't work in Penasco!

If there are people several deep trying to buy drinks at Elixir....they're not drinking! Maybe the bartenders are super slow? I don't ever recall seeing people 3 deep at Mannys during the craziest spring breaks waiting to get served! Whatever happened to the "other" upscale "for the locals" place in the Mirador area....BUMAYE? Is it still open? And if so, how often? I believe it followed "your" business model years ago!

Why all the Elixr hate? Coco must be doing something right because Elixir has been open for about 4 or more years now. I prefer Elixir over anything in RP on a Saturday night. You cant compare Elixir and Boo Bar or Elixir and Mannys because they are completely different. Boo Bar is great place to hang out day or night to get some good food, drink a little and watch some sports. However, after 11pm at night its Elixir time and anyone in RP knows that. Elixir does well because they provide an atmosphere that you cant get virtually anywhere else in RP. Joe if you think people arent buying drinks at Elixir you're eating too many of those ~~~~BROWNIES~~~~!!!!!! Another thing Joe, how do you not consider Elixir to be an upscale bar? Its more upscale than any other club or bar in RP, so I dont understand why you would say that. Obviously if you're 52 Elixir might not be your venue but if you're 28 then it most definitely is. Saying that the Mexicans dont spend money at Elixir is the biggest ~~~BROMA~~~~ ive heard in a while. Like someone else said they arent in line for napkins!!!

Just what is this atmosphere everyone is talking about?

Current music - young people, a nice lounge-type atmosphere with couches - bottle service.

Cocaine?

Hehe, just kidding. But yeah, Elixir is the one spot you can actually dress up while in Penasco after 10pm and not feel out of place. No flip-flops, shorts, baseball caps and "Free Mustache Rides" shirts to be found. And no Jimmy Buffet, Eagles, AC/DC, RCPM, etc. Not that I don't like some classic rock, but it's nice to show Penasco newbies that there's a side of the town other than the stereotypical beach bum "atmosphere," if you will.

Also out of the question: Steve McCarty of Steve Miller fame, Curly Smith of Boston fame and an all Rock Star band
featuring Jimmy Crespo, Gary Moon, leon Bisquera, David Lewark, Terry Anderson and Paul Mcdermand?
Do the even make Bic lighters any more?
Ladyjeeper
That was Zippo, not Bic. And yes, I still have my Zippo.

... looks like a place for Girls to put on their high heels, doll up and flash their latest bling ... while the roosters in Penasco put on pants, shoes and collared shirts to try to impress. Sounds born in the last 1 to 3 years fill the air... no booths selling tchotchkes to the patrons....or strange Karaoke sounds welcome....

When Coco first built it it was a titty bar (maybe 2003), when his term as mayor of Penasco was up, he ran for diputado or to us like a senator or representative and won, thats how he became known as the dipu-table to the towns folk. I think Elixer as it is has been around for 6 or 7 years.

AC, I fenced it and put it up for sale. P.S. I fenced it because of Elixer, people were drinking there and dumping all of they're garbage. Not to mention what they were doing in the unfinished rooms and pool. If I was 30 I'd be doin' it to.

His term as mayor was up in 2003, and thats about when it opened, but it was run as a titty bar when he was a diputado, thats why they called him the dipu-table for table dance.

Good looking people, dancing, no hats sandals or wife beaters. Always packed after midnight, ~~~Traigos~~~ till 3am. DJ spinning the hotest ~~~~MUSICA~~~~ in RP... and everything else mentioned. After going to Elixir for so many years now, I dont think I'd ever go back to a Manny's or Baja Cantina style "CLUB" again. The NEW ERA has begun and "DANCE CLUBS" like Elixir will dominate the market! Im sure we can keep Manny's and Pink Caddy open for the bikers and wife beaters/ guy or gal that hasnt showered all spring break...

There is a big Coco and little Coco, big Coco's real name is Rodrigo, not sure about little Coco, but probably the same. .

You stick to the places you enjoy....and I'll stick to mine....probably won't ever meet at the same place....:crybaby:....NOT!!! But there is no need to put down those who do not share your "tastes" in entertainment or music. Are they enforcing the no-smoking inside Elixir?

BTW, I hardly ever bring down clothes that would meet the "dress standards" at Elixir....I prefer t's, shorts, and flip-flops/sandals when I'm in Penasco!

And all I was trying to say was why not give Elixir some competition at Manny's (after a renovation) and open a place like that on weekend afternoons too?

Maybe you should check with Manny Sr......he might be willing to take on a partner with some cash (for those renovations)! I heard those "renovations" over at the Wrecked at the Reef when it moved over to the old Reef Bar were pretty expensive!

An unnamed person once came down to my house with the "monster Hits of the 80s" cd bundle.....is it legal to murder such a person?

Definitely not enforcing the smoking ban and that in my opinion is the only downside. However, I guess neither does ~~~~ GUA GUAS~~~~ come to think of it!

When Wrecked (or The Reef Beach Club, as it was sometimes promoted as) reopened with that classy white linen and pine IKEA-looking patio lounge/DJ area, it appeared to be busy, per the promotions and photos I saw posted on their Facebook page. I haven't seen much from them in general, and every time I ask if that place does any business these days I get no reply. I feel bad for not heading out there, but by 9pm, the thought of driving all the way down in the dark is major buzzkill. If I knew the unlit sandy road towards Cholla Bay as well as I did through Las Conchas, maybe it would be a different story. That said... Maybe when they go under Manny can get that furniture on the cheap!

Turn at the corner where Pink Cadillac is located and head back up the hill. It's on the right a couple of blocks up.
mexicoruss
Wrecked at the reef is a great place not just during the night James. It has a great chef and the food and atmosphere is killer! It is clean, it is up scale a bit but it sits on a beautiful strand of beach - Sometimes we go there in the afternoon for fish and chips and it always rocks! FYI
