This last week and even today we have had a major fly infestation in Las Conchas so much so you can't even go outside without being swarmed with big black flies. I have read that Las Conchas HOA has donated 30 bags of lime for the dump, but this has hardly helped at all. If the City of Puerto Penasco wants tourism to continue to rise they must do something about this fly and dump problem.

The flies were everywhere in PP this last weekend. I'm on the Mirador and they were everywhere.......
playaperro
Couldn't agree with you more Cortez, you could get your house sprayed so they won't come around.

Encanto was bad as well. Really put a damper on enjoying our patio, especially the days the wind was blowing from the north.

:hairout:

Last year they where smoke bombing every afternoon at the Mayan. These are not your ordinary house fly but horseflies. They come in the afternoon when the winds die down to scrounge on dead carcasses on the beach. They have serrated teeth to cut through flesh. Dead whales and sea lions a favorite diet. What is eary is that you can be happily on the beach and hear a strange a slow hum which suddenly becomes a crescendo as they arrive to feast.

Yikes!

The major problem is the city dump. The fishermen dump tons of fish parts and guts in the dump and the flies feast on it. Roger Cliffton used to donate lime to cover these fish parts and stop the fly population. I think Roger is gone now and no one is keeping the lime campaign going. The city should address the problem just for the tourist traffic.

Why aren't the fish parts being dumped back in the ocean instead of ending up in a dump?
Roberto
I know the dump contributes to the problem but it is everywhere at times. I stopped on Highway 2, before the Agriculture/military stop, out in the middle of nowhere all desert, and the flies mobbed into the car. Ag inspector asked if we had any fruits or plants and I replied, "No, solo moskas".

HMMMMM no flies at the Condos.:notme:

No problem in the Mirador at my house anyway.

flies-

I've always felt that the flies were, at least in part, coming from what I called the "open
t*rd sewage farm" on the N. side of the road back in to town from Playa Encanto.
It"s the large tree foliage area and the area where you want close outside car vents, to ovoid the stench.

The city fathers saw fit to enclose the sewage plants in town!!!

Anyone have any secrets or tips to best deal with these pests? Or is it a lost cause?

Seriously this works great in conjunction with the disposable bag fly traps at home depot. It also keeps little kids inline.

OMG, I got one of these at a White Elephant X-Mas party years ago. Shocked myself so bad from accidentally touching it I could feel the current surge from my hand through my heart and back. Keep those away from children!
Roberto
This infestation seems to occur then go away. The regular fly problem here is just not that great. I wonder if it has to do with the big rain we had, somehow markedly increasing the survival rate of the eggs laid. BTW the usual life span is 20 to 30 days but the females are fertile almost immediately after leaving the maggot world and lay eggs in large numbers. We need an entomologist consult on this one.

I seen two flies (explicit) on my dash board on the way out. the other 150 in my truck were watching.

Does anyone have an updated or current report on the flies in Las Conchas? We have family going down this weekend and we were thinking about joining them but with it being cold and flies on top of it, not sure that sounds so great?

Any update on the flies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Cortez2
Even with the rain yesterday it did not hamper the fly population. It is impossible to sit on your deck without being swarmed by flies.

What a bummer. Thank you for this info Cortez!

Does anyone know if citronella candles or any other trick might work to keep these pests away?

Just out of curiosity, how much did it rain yesterday? I had roofing being torn off by a handyman yesterday and hopefully will have new foam roof applied today by a roofing
company. Hope I'm not in trouble!

Good question. Casa wezz say's no rainfall..Rained quite a bit here in Tucson!

Does anyone remember seeing clear plastic bags, such as a BAGGIE sandwich bag filled with water and hanging from a string, on the patios of local business'... I once asked what was the purpose of this, and was told it keeps the flys away... and as I recall there were no flys around...

it doesn't kill them but it may bring some releif to the constant annoyance of flies buzzing your head and landing on the top of your beer can.... (just a thought)

It rained yesterday enough to make the main road muddy, and left puddles in my driveway.
The sun is shining bright today, hopefully your new roof is OK

I remember, & still see some business do that. If possible try to hang near windows, the extra reflection from the glass really bugs the pests.
Roberto
I make tiny little notes "Please Flies Not allowed" and place them all over. That seems to work as I don' t have flies.

That is a great idea, flies have millions of eyes and any reflection will spook them. How about making a "mobile" using old CD's... they will think it is an attack of dragonflies from outer space....

too funny,lol.
the fly has two eyes, one on each side of its head. each eye is a compound eye meaning the same facet is repeated 800 times (for fruit flies), each facet is called an ommatidia or simple eye. each ommatidia is composed of a set of photoreceptor neurons that detect light.
I bet Roberto's flies wear glasses! just a guess
MIRAMAR
Seadweller, about the bag- are you talking about the bags you purchase at Home Depot? You add water, and hang up the bag- they stink, but capture flies.
Seadweller
These were just regular clear plastic bags... they didn't stink or capture the flies, they just scared them off...
MIRAMAR
They probably "heard" from the other flies how much the other bags stink, so they stay away.

OK, a million is high.... here is the Yahoo answer;

>>>In an insects eye, there are many facets called ommatidia that each have a corneal lens (like the cornea in humans), crystalline cone (like the lens in humans), rhabdom (like the photoreceptors in humans), and a retinula cell.

However, even though their eyes have all these surfaces, the insect sees one single image and not a kalidescope of images like movies often portray. Insects have a very wide field of view and are great at detecting motion, but they are poor at seeing clearly at only about 20/1200.

Beetles have about 300 ommatidia, a dragonfly has about 25,000, a fruit fly has about 800, a horsefly has about 10,000<<<

Bottom line is each Rocky point beach fly has 10,000 eyes. But since they are never alone but swarm in groups of 1,000 minimum, that is one million eyes looking at you..

Just put 5 or 6 beer bottles away from you with a little bit of beer in them and it will fill up fast. I did it with one. Try it you will be amazed. Flies like to drink too.
Jim
I took my family to the water park outside of town several years ago (when it was still open). We brought a gallon of that orange juice wannabe drink. As soon as we opened it, we were immediately overwhelmed by bees. After about 15 minutes, we thought about just leaving but I put the jug next to the fence about 50' away and the bees (and flys) hung out there and left us completely alone.

We ended up having a friend loan us one of those electric 'tennis' type rackets that kill flies. It was dark and rainy today and provided some great entertainment for the kids. Plus, 25 cents per fly is a pretty good motivator.

See, capitalism does work! (not intended to set off a political debate)

No such luck. I was there this weekend and prayed for it not to rain, but it did rather hard. Only part of the roof was covered with plastic, covering the rooms where all the furnishings were placed. Still got a bit of water in those rooms. A lot of water in the unprotected ones that already had the ceilings removed. Not a great weekend at all. But looks like the sun will be shining and the roof should be ready for the foam sometime in the next few days.

Typhoid, cholera, salmonellosis, dysentery bacilli, tuberculosis, and parasitic worms are transmitted by flies

PTO. Peñasco, SON.

A serious problem is affecting plague of flies today and for more than four months the town of Puerto Peñasco, causing a disease outbreak and serious damage to the health of the community.
The proliferation of insects in Puerto Peñasco is in largely to the exploitation of primary activity descalle clam shelling and inside the city, and that the landfill receives daily about 40 tons of shells, visors and waste.
Another determinant of fly plague in the city , is that those who exploit this activity clandestinely cast product residue on the outskirts of the city, seriously affecting the health of citizens and creating a source of infection in health.
In this situation, the director Raymundo Oomislim Blanco Ruiz, said that the para-municipal applied three times per week insecticide and lime in places where waste is deposited on fishing, which is avoided as breeding of flies and other pests to health.
"We working well in litter control, fumigation and is made of lime application in organic waste and sprayed directly into the shells every three days, but it is contaminated by illegal dumping fly. "
Blanco Ruiz acknowledged that some people engaged in this activity does not want to pay the monthly fee Oomislim and throw debris on the outskirts of the city, "are doing it because he does not pay or they do not want to go to the landfill, and we'll start to fine".
In July, August and September the peak of the exploitation of the clam genus Rocky landfill waste 250 tons per day for this activity, causing a collapse in the control of fly breeding, so that the Today we still observe this pattern in a smaller scale.
Currently the landfill receives daily an estimated 90 tons of trash, 50 tons which corresponds to shells, visors and fishing activity waste.

Playing Mass: Plague of Flies

House female can lay about 8000 thousand eggs whites in the following 24 hours the larvae hatch and begin to eat nutrient-rich organic remains, such as exist at present in the landfill to dispose of tons of shells and viscera of the fishing.
At the end of metamorphosis, the adult breaks one end of the pupa with a circular cut and flies in search of congeners to mate and complete their life cycle. Adults can live for half a month, but given the conditions in the unregulated descalladoras, proliferation and plague of flies is felt even in winter weather, although in this time of year is rare insect presence in mass .

Serious Health Problem

House flies can carry infectious diseases such as typhoid, cholera, salmonellosis, dysentery bacilli, tuberculosis, and parasitic worms and can transmit from their paws or mouth and into the food subsequently consumed.
The proliferation of large volumes of Flies are considered one of the worst household pests, surpassing the mosquitoes, ants, mice and cockroaches.

They meet health authorities to solve plague of flies

A meeting to resolve the problems emerging from the proliferation of flies in the town of Puerto Peñasco is the weekend said the health sector and municipal government, which took definitive agreements for the welfare of the community of Puerto Peñasco.
The plan of work to be undertaken by the Health Regulation Unit, the Agency Municipal Cleaning Operator, Department of Epidemiology and Health Municipal coordination is to identify the problem and call for different groups to give information talks hygiene measures must be taken to prevent reproduction and 'proliferation of flies.
"We invite companies filleting, descalladoras, and that kind of turns are what we mostly have problems or that the public identifies as problematic, there we will give a talk on the importance of hygiene, "said the head of the state unit of sanitary regulation.
Meza said Ivan Valenzuela will be starting next Wednesday, December 14 when the units mentioned above start with the work of talks and supervision in areas where these activities are conducted from the sea.
stated that she also talks will be aimed at the general population in order to eradicate the pest problems that currently flies there in Rocky Point, "the population take the same measures taken by the owners of such establishments in order to avoid diseases that can lead you flies. "
He explained that the landfill also will take stronger measures to prevent the reproduction and proliferation of flies, which is a pest in a few weeks time will tend to disappear, said the state official.
"Establishments and businesses handling seafood and above all has descallan are supervised and regulated by contract with a deposit of garbage they generate, as visors and shells. "
The main problem of the plague of flies today comes from illegal landfills that are used to dispose of such shells and organic waste generated by the proliferation of flies, said the owner of the control unit health.
To give solution to this situation felt by the population, monitor and inspect establishments that and we will be vigilant in the outskirts of the city to prevent further illegal dumping with.

Ennn I don't know... Mexico without flies is sort of like Hawaii without Japs.....;the freeze monday will get rid of them (flies not Japanese tourists) I think they just need to move the dumps....in Puerto lobos my friends invested on a beach front track North of town without knowing the town dump is their neighbor....can you picture the dump down there (think fish guts and burning trash.....needless to say the project is stalled and the "developer ran for Germany with the cash
