If you are in Puerto Penasco or close by today you will want to be out on Sandy Beach for the season opener for Thunder on the Beach! Gates open at 11:00 am and racing starts at 1:00. The beer tents are set up, the food vendors will be set up by 10:00 so you can taste local foods from Viva Mexico with tacos of Pork, beef, chicken, and fish. Plus El Torito with their Sonoran Hot Dogs and Momias which are in fact hot dogs wrapped in a flour tortilla wrapped in bacon and deep fried and served bunless with homemade salsa! Out standing, JB dogs will be there with their own style of gourmet dogs. John from Maxes Cafe will be there with his Barrel Cantina which he made himself and it is awesome serving mixed drinks - whatever you want. Several sprint cars came in yesterday and the dwarf cars were out practicing yesterday as well. I will post pics and vids after the event which will go well into the evening. If you are not here you should be! www.thunderonthebeach.mx
Saw some of them coming in yesterday. It is going to be a fantastic day for it - weather looks to be perfect. Watching races, looking at the Sea of Cortez, sipping on a Corona, etc., eating great food and meeting new friends. Tough duty.
I am biased in my opinion of the races. So pom pom alert is in full action.
The race on the oval track was super fun and exciting. We had 2 900 hp sprints and a 600 hp modified running together. We had 5 dwarf cars running together. The crowd during the day was around 300-400. The Sand dragsters starting coming in around 2:00 pm by 5:00 we had about 35 cars competing and they ran ran well past 10:00 pm Saturday night. The crowd swelled to over 1000 people as the evening came on indicating that this race day was a brand new chapter in the Thunder on the beach raceway evolution. IT WAS GREAT! I will post pics after I watermark them which takes some time - there are some great pics so check back. Dont forget to check out Thunder on the beach on Face book and www.thunderonthebeach.mx I will put one photo here that I really like
I noticed the big sand bags in the corners in someone else's photos (on FB)....but there were still some brave (or not too bright) people setup with their chairs down low!
Hey Russ...keep "cheering"...if it brings in some business for the town!
We were there Saturday afternoon until just before dark. The 2 sprint cars and the modified ran a 20 lap or so exhibition race just after we got there...perfect timing! As always, the sprint cars put on a show that everybody really enjoyed. It's hard to find race cars more fun to watch than the sprints. Next came the sand drags with everything from quads to a blown alcohol dragster. There were jeeps and pickups, from mild to wild, and even some guy with the family SUV! All of the participants seemed to have a great time. The dragster stole the show with several perfect runs down the track that were unbelievable. From the cold beers and tacos, and race cars at the beach, it was a great time. The $5 bucks to get in was well worth it. I look forward to going again!
Hey Russ, Do you know who runs the orange dragster in your post or where they are from? Everything about it was very impressive. They must have the money to do it the right way and hire a top notch mechanic to set it up and tune it because it didn't miss a beat.
