Coastal Highway to Sandy Beach

I understand that the road coming down from the Coastal Highway to Sandy Beach area is due to be finished within a week or two. Also, that it would be a little longer, by a few miles, coming down from Sonoyta but would save time.

Of course, coming in from San Luis/California it would save both time and miles.

How long does it take to grive from San Diego to PP? Is it better to go thru Yuma or Calexico?

Where would a person access the coastal highway in Sonoyta?
El Gato
It doesn't access from Sonoyta - I think it is at the roundabout as you are getting close to town. I've never taken it so not positive.

6 hours or less from Tijuana to Penasco. You can also cross at Mexicali or San Luis depending on what you want to do. I drive to TJ a couple of times a year and it gets easier every time!
AZ ROB
Is there a map of the new coastal highway? I need to go to Yuma and wanted to drop down to Penasco for the weekend.

Rob...it's showing up on Google maps now.....

http://maps.google.com/?ll=31.798224,-114.430847&spn=0.95474,1.234589&t=h&z=10

The coast highway to El Golfo is great (took it about 2-3 years ago)...some nice scenery too.

just zoom and scroll.....Hwy 3 is showing connecting to Hwy 40 in Mexico, and going up to San Luis.....looks like it connects to 95 on the US side....

Maybe Bill Cox can verify if they've finished the stretch from the US border to El Golfo...

Rob, when you cross the border at San Luis, the first street you will come to is Avenida Obregon, you want to be on that street, but you cant make a left there, so go to the next street, go left and come back around the block to Obregon, just keep headed east until you come to the turn off to highway 3 El Golfo. Obregon is Highway 2 and also will take you to Sonoyta. Yes, Joe it is finished.

Bill, is Hwy 3 not showing accurately on the current Google....by the border, right off Hwy 2? cause the map shows it ending further south and merging into Hwy 40??? (see the link I posted)

You need to go east on hwy 2 about 3 mile out of town. There you will find the new toll road. It is well marked now. The cost for the toll road is 8.75 each way. Kind of expensive. I updated my Tom Tom with Mexico maps which work well for getting around were there are not street names down there. My favorite way to go is when you cross the border in San Luis I cross hwy 2 on Second ave and take a right on Constitution, then I follow it out on the rural road which turns into hwy 3.

We have driven San Diego to Rocky Point many many times. I've found the best route to be going through Tecate and taking the toll road. You by-pass Mexicali and the congestion there and the posted speed is 110 km/hr. The road to Tecate and the switchbacks at La Rumorosa are hairy and car-sickness is a factor. Therefore, we mainly cross at Calexico East. No incoming inspection, 3 left turns and you are on the highway. We make it from North San Diego County to Rocky Point in 5-1/2 hours. Have also taken the Hwy 5/4/3 route and it is quicker and less miles. You do go through many small towns, the roads are in so-so shape and you have to be aware of farm equipment and animals. Crossing at San Luis will add about 45 minutes to the trip.
BIG MAC
Diego XX neglects to tell you that he drives 100 MPH, and runs every red light in PP to make the 5-1/2 hour mark. And when he passes the El Golfo police chief at 90 MPH it adds two hours to the trip.

Not entirely true. It was only 2 lights and it was on the way out of town. The new by-pass will eliminate this problem area. The El Golfo police chief was unmarked and "escorting" 5 vehicles into town late at night. The fine police staff in El Golfo was very courteous and did not issue a ticket as they were tired of trying to figure out my spanglish. And I rarely break 80 mph as far as I know.

Maybe a slight exaggeration on my part. I was remembering the trip to Catalina.

Hey Roberto...Here's a man after my own heart.

I wonder if he can teach me Spanglish.

We were in PP this past weekend. They were working on the new road from the Coastal Highway to Sandy Beach over the weekend. On the "Coastal Hwy" end, the bulk of the paving is complete and looks as though you could drive on it. The turning lanes look to need a little more work, but all in all, it looks good!

Coming from Sonoyta, north of town, take the turn towards Laguna Shores. You will see the new road on the left, just over the railroad tracks!
PintoPoint
I have been taking the new section for a couple months now. We follow it to the end then jump off onto a dirt road that follows the rail road tracks. Its going to be nice when finished.

I went to Black Mountain via the new road yesterday. It is paved all the way to both ends. Really a time saver from Sandy Beach.

I wonder if they (the city) are going to promote this as the primary entrance to the Sandy Beach resort area? I love all parts of the town myself, but I feel that the easier the drive, the more likely people are to come down here and enjoy PP. On the other hand it would also alienate all the business owners on the main road into town if they diverted traffic.

Where is Calexico East?

From Interstate 8 take Hwy 7 South. It is about 5 miles east of El Centro.

I looked on a map and it looked like after crossing the border I would take Hiway 1 to the 3. Is that the best way?

Just back from the weekend in RP.....the new road is WONDERFUL!! It got us into the town REALLY quick; especially since our place is off the Coastal Hwy! All paving complete and markings in place. Woo Hoo ! ! !

How far along is the road from Coastal Hwy at Black Mtn to Sandy Beach. In December they were still grading dirt by the Old Circle K at the round about.
