Add that to the 14 snuffed out in Nuevo Laredo and their bodies hung from a bridge last week, with the heads neatly delivered in a cooler right in front of City Hall. Granted, as you say - "somewhere else in Mexico," but can you blame people for being afraid to travel there with this kind of stuff taking place? Could you imagine the reaction if stuff like this was happening within our borders?
Terribly brutal stuff going on and I don't know that Calderon's war against the cartels has made much of a difference, other than consolidate the power structure of the Sinaloa cartel and beat down the Zetas and some of the other players.
It was interesting to see an interview with Vincente Fox a couple of weeks ago where he was pushing for the legalization of all drugs-no exceptions. Not sure that would have an impact on violence in Mexico as the vast majority of the drugs head to the U.S. Maybe it's time we started to look into decriminalizing certain drugs like weed and see what kind of an impact that has. It would certainly reduce the prison populations throughout the country.
I don't disagree with what you say. When you consider the number of people imprisoned for marijuana violations-and I am not talking about the big time dealers because they never get caught-it just doesn't make sense given the cost of imprisonment as well as the unbelievable amount of money that is spent and has been spent in the so called war on drugs. It seems every major drug bust story you see on the news is a marijuana bust. Instead, go after the cocaine, heroin, crack, meth and other drug dealers and see if that makes a difference in the reduction of overall criminal activity.
