The last time I was down I saw a lot of flying fish. I don't remember seeing them in the past. Are they common or is this something new?

extremely common farther offshore when water temps are above 75 degrees.
They seem to be coming in closer this year, probably due to the warmer water conditions.

Yep. I saw bunches when we were down at the end of September. The water had to be warm because it was hot, humid miserable then.

I saw a Flying Fish about a month ago at San Clemente Island, get spooked out of the water by a Seal, and as it was cruising over a kelp forest, a Pelican flew down and ate the Flying Fish in mid-flight...that was friggin' awesome to see, wish I had gotten it on video.
