First I love this site and almost all of the folks that post on it.
When I first signed on it was rely active with great input and help for people new to Rocky Point. It provided information about the town, fishing and more. But now it is in decline and that makes me sad.
This weekend I ask some of the folks what they thought was happening and what could be done to get it back. It seemed the consensus was people were no longer posting or even viewing due to the few that go off on tantrums and hijack threads. These few have spoiled it for so many.
I only speak for myself but I feel if the site is to servive those few need to be blocked in some way they are identified more closely. It seems some are so intent on destruction that the have posted under different names etc. I don't see this type of action on othersites I visit and we do not need it here

Stuart Please bring it back and lets move forward to a great site.
Thanksfor reading Your friend Bill

If it's any consolation, this same person is also doing it on a very large hi tech forum that I frequent as well.
Stuart
Bill, I understand your sentiment. And thank-you for caring.

This forum is like any community. There are those that love it and are actively involved, those that stop in once in awhile to see what's going on, and those that are naysayers for any number of reasons. Over the years, this forum has evolved and offers lots of information for many different users, be it fishing, real estate, crossing the border, whatever. For the most part, I'm pleased with what we offer and the folks that come here on a regular basis. There is no advertising revenue, which is even rarer these days -- not being deluged by an onslaught of pop-up advertisements everywhere you look.

Yes, there are some bad apples and weeding them out is an ongoing process. We have open registration and charge nothing to participate here, which creates part of the problem you mention. We do monitor multiple registrations and who's who under different names. Why? In some cases, both husbands and wives use the same computer to visit this site, each using their own name. Nothing wrong with that at all. We want folks to visit and share. But, it also creates the problem of "certain unnamed users" being able to create a new name from a different IP and fake email address, as has happened a couple times lately.

So rather than restrict things for the majority of the good people in this community, we sometimes have to put up with the bullsh!t from the few losers that seem to have nothing better to do with their time than cause hate and discontent. I often bear the brunt and focus of these attacks and make every effort to ban, control and delete when they do occur. But nobody can sit here and monitor this site 24/7.

I've also been making an effort to control thread hijacking. Some of the worst offenders have been warned about this and I've seen improvement, but it will always happen to some degree as topics evolve and shift. That I have no problem with -- deliberate attempts to derail will get you a ticket to banned camp.

If you (or any other user) has a specific issue, report the post to me and I or Jeeper will check it out ASAP. Neither of us try to be the censors or content police, but if somebody is out and out being a jerk, we will put the dunce cap on them and make them go stand in time out for awhile. Otherwise, you are free to ignore any other user so that you don't have to see any nonsense they post.

As I mentioned, our only real alternative to the openness we offer here is to restrict access and moderate every post, which would destroy the real-time aspect of the information you get here. I'm not in favor of that and, in essence, it's giving into the jerks and letting them win.

Thanks,
Stuart
GV Jack
Stuart....

I can honestly say that had I not found this site, I for one would probably have not gone to RP at all over the last few years.

I thank You, Tyler and LJ for all you do here. As hard as they may try, we can't let the few ruin it for the many.

Thanks, again.

My guess is you were at Chuck's place and he is pissed abou the health care thing i reported about his bro (love you chuck!)...except for dog hater Happy the forum has had peace break out since the political stuff was put behind the wall....i think it has been great lately...good posts on ATVing pro and con...fishing stuff .....road trip stuff...warnings on crooked cops....safety stuff....home repair stuff....joking around (Asu fans suck!) great places to eat and shop reports.....i love the forum
Stuart
And even Jerry likes it...

I agree. Locking up Rants has caused peace to blossom (for the most part).

What suggestions do you have for Stuart 'to bring it back'?

Also, this person could be stopped very easily on this site and what ever other sites he does this to. Cyberharassment ( annoy, abuse, threaten, harass) is a federal crime. If the powers to be don't do anything, then they enable this person and his behavior.

I'm in full agreement with Wood Spinner (Bill), though I lack his sense of the forum's history. As a new resident and new forumisto this year, the small group of masturbatory posters who seem to service only their desire to see their own name in print probably drive thoughtful users away. Tough and thankless job, Stuart. But I hope the pay makes the effort worthwhile.

I find it unbelievable how easy you guys go on Joe. What is the favoritism ?? Occasionally he posts something with common sense and worthwhile but it is ridiculous how many times he posts absolute HATE and RAGE and VULGARITY and VENOM without any rebuttal . Why is Joe protected when others who post such profanity and hate and they get banned?? (which is appropriate ! ) I think I know why, but that is no excuse.

Jerry, it's a little more than "getting frustrated as old men yelling at clouds".

While some comments can elicit some "gray", Joe can be very "black & white" with his nasty diatribe at times. Vulgarity on Joe's part is probably an understatement.

I know, this probably will not the most popular post because Joe does get some weird protection from the forum, but it is TRUE !!!!! He is a loose cannon. Just go back and read his nasty ramblings. In fact, they remind me a little of when Jerry came back on his HIGH-HORSE (no pun intended) form Amsterdam and found himself thrown in the slammer (banned from the forum) in no time.

I'd say one of the reasons for declining posts is that there just isn't all the much going on in Rocky Pt. much of the time, especially at this time of year. It's a small town.

Losing Seadweller didn't help. He was a local who knew a lot about what was going on. I think he quit posting after someone got obnoxious with him, but I never really got the story.

I only get down to Rocky Point and surrounding area about once a year, mainly because I can't get others to go with me more often than that. But the place is often in my mind, and I check the forum at least a couple of times a day. Some posts are garbage, but some are entertaining, and I get a lot of useful information that helps me enjoy my visits there more.

I'm a regular visitor to four other forums, two for hunting, one for trout fishing and one for bass/crappie fishing. I occasionally visit other forums. I have noticed that there's a bit more belligerence and quarreling among the regulars on this forum compared to the others. I don't know why.
jerry

It's my opinion that political stuff on this type of forum is best kept to a minimum. It's hard to avoid it completely since the war on drugs, illegal immigration and cultural aspects of the U.S. and Mexico have impacts on Rocky Point and the border in general, but the less the better. I don't come here for political debates or discussions. If I'm learning about the local fishing and marine life, or local color and history in the northern Sea of Cortez, or the best place to buy seafood or tortillas, I don't care whether I'm getting it from a tea party activist or a socialist. Appreciation of the Sea of Cortez experience and Mexican culture should be the common glue that holds this forum's community together and obviates other differences we might have as individuals.

It's not that I don't have strong opinions. It took me a while (maybe 30 years), but I finally realized that most people don't want my help in improving their minds. Right or wrong, they've established their own subjective realities that they're comfortable with and would just like to be left alone to believe in them. I don't enjoy discussing (arguing) with people who aren't even hearing me. I also realize that there probably isn't a soul on Earth who doesn't hold some opinion on some subject that is radically at odds with my own. So if shared knowledge and enjoyment of the northern Sea of Cortez is my goal, why post remarks that can interfere with that?

With their ratings so high, that sounds about right that there would only be 4 of you !

I'm involved in many forums for motorcycles, motorhomes/RV, guns and fishing. The same people that are giving you helpful advice in the technical posts then turn around and cast aspersions on your parentage in a political post. It has to do with the anonymity of the web I think because I'm pretty sure nobody would talk that kind of sh*t to my face (6'4" 280 pounds). But I digress.

My gun forum has "watercooler" section where anything goes. However, you must have 50 posts to participate. That seems to work well, but you can't be easily butthurt as it is dominated by the wackiest of the right wing whack-jobs. You go in there and have an opposing viewpoint you will be crushed. Not cool. Not fair. But it is a private site and if you don't like it you can leave. ALL of the other forums I participate in have a strict no politics policy and any infighting is dealt with quickly. Your post is removed and you are warned via PM. If you fail to heed said warning you are banned.

If it is not dealt with, it will kill the forum.

Same here. It's why we have Rants and Raves and why it is now only by requested access. It took a long time to reign in the political bull crap. The couple of other forums I'm involved with are the same.
Roberto
Also we should remember that this is a free forum supported and maintained by Tyler, Stuart and Jeeps. Archie Bunker is the "him" you're looking for. The show was "All in the Family." And the "stifle yourself..." phrase was most commonly followed by the word I posted and directed at his wife, Edith Bunker.

The show explored a LOT of working class issues of the day and Archie was about as bigoted a racist as one could be. You have to wonder, given the rampant political correctness of today, if any station would even dare air a show like All in the Family.

I've seen some reruns in the last few years and I watched the show as a kid. I doubt any network would air a show like that now. It made fun of Archie, and show just how ignorant he was which was a good thing at the time, but we've swung to an extreme opposite now.
GV Jack
Interesting thing is that Carroll O'Connor who played Archie was quite liberal.

I guess it was his way of protesting. You're right...it would never get out there today.

Too bad we don't have the good variety shows and good comedies these days.

Mash...Dean Martin..Carol Burnett..Red Skelton.....I haven't laughed at the TV for years.

Carol Burnett was one of my favorites. Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie. Even Tony Orlando and Dawn. Such good hearted silliness. Not pure violence and sex all the time on every single show. Don't even get me started on the lyrics to current pop songs now . . . it's disgusting.

I love South Park simply for the fact that there is no such thing as a sacred cow with them. But it is only available via cable, unless you go buy DVDs or something to watch it. When the shows mentioned in this thread aired, there was no such thing as "cable." Most cities had the big three alphabet stations and some had a few UHF stations to boot... all free, all public TV. It's amazing Archie cut it back then, but as said, he'd be shot down in flames today as too racist.

Cable apparently came to different parts of the country at different times. We actually had cable in the late 1950's. Living in the mountains of Pa. broadcast reception was iffy at best as the stations were quite distant. There were 3 channels, two iffy and one pretty good. We got free cable back in those days because they needed to put a large junction box or signal amplifyer on the ground at certain intervals in town. Lucky us, we were selected and a 24x24x24 silver box was mounted next to our house. Some neighbors descovered they got a great signal if they aimed their antennas at the box. Unfortunately for us our signal went to crap then!!

People often tip-toe on eggshells when dealing with persons who have physical disabilities (although I doubt Joe expects any particular form of sympathy or special treatment).

But- you also have to keep in mind that much of Joe's "energy" is merely youthful pride and exuberance finding an often "unpolished" method of expression. :ugeek:

I have no idea why Joe has zeroed in so nastily on Bill, But if I know Bill well enough, I'm sure he's not losing any sleep over Joe's "disapproval" of his social mannerisms in the forum. I echo the sentiments of others here- Bill and Edna are great folks.

Funny thing is that Joe has mentioned on a couple occasions how he wished he could fish some of the more remote beaches, but can't do so unless he has help launching his kayak - and Bill Hale is the kind of guy that would probably lend that helping hand, if asked.

Funny how the bridges we sometimes choose to burn are the ones that lead to the destinations we dream of going... pure irony.

We all understand that there are people who aggravate us... that's simply a reality that goes with being human.

Joe simply needs to consider the fact that lashing out at people who bug you does about as much social good as pissing into the wind.

Uhhhh, I certainly didn't get that context from anybody's post, Jerry. Not exactly sure where you did. Dry Heat asked a legitimate question; I provided a legitimate answer, within my limits of understanding of Joe's current condition. It was by no means meant to deride Joe or make fun of him in any way whatsoever. He has publicly posted here on a few occasions about his progress since his accident. I don't see anyone making fun of him, only offering encouragement. Please explain why you feel this way.

The silent dog whisperers on this web site crack me up.You can't say come right out and say what you think...because it is hateful. Todays example Fake concern about Joe's physical state when you really want to say "screw you cripple"

Who do you refer too?

Who expressed any sense of care or concern about Joe's physical condition?

Your self-righteousness may be at elevated levels again - It seems to have you believing that you can read minds and see what other people "really want to say" ....

You might want to get that checked out by your other buddy (you know- the Mirador Meter Maid)...

You....but hey you were just protecting a tribal elder by firing a shot at Joe by slinging some bs psychoanalytical explanation of why Joe struck out at poor Bill .Joe fired that initial shot at Bill because he smelled BS in the tone of Bill's concern trolling thread.Bill knew Happy was banned and most likely was posting this thread after talking to one or both of the exiles. He was sort of causing trouble.

Exactly, Bill was brain washed or lite up by fish fry crew. He never had the courage to post before, and as a matter of fact Bill was the first to unleash Happy on us, OH and BTH Bill is very good at starting these threads and running off for help to jeepers.

A tribal elder...? what in the HELL are you talking about?

This whole thing started when Bill welcomed a new guy to the fishing forum, and Joe decided that he had to be Bill's self-appointed "editor" and tore into him about it.

Bill does some thing (or things) that bug Joe... I get it. But Christ, why be so petty as to call people out when they bother you? It's juvenile.

and hey- Joe may be physically challenged, but at least he isn't an effing mental retard, like HIS "tribal elders"...

"Hey- remember that time, when that guy said that thing, and it pissed off that girl, and so she ran off and told that other dude to kick his ass...? "

Why would you have brought up Joe's current physical state in the first place? The answer is you were causing trouble because you like causing trouble.Bill started the thread to cause trouble,Joe smacked him around to cause trouble,Rplarry joined in because he loves trouble too.I joined the fray to back joe and more importantly to cause trouble for Larry and Mr. Moore.Perro of course had to cause trouble and even Dry heat wanted a piece of this scramble...amazingly Kenny stayed out of it...must be his new Free mason training RPJoe is strangly quiet for a troublemakers trouble maker too

What, are you asleep at the wheel or what?.. Below was on page 2 #15, it may be a to little passive aggressive, but still. LOL

think more than a few of us would miss our fiery friend Bill, so "Don't worry, be Happy". It's really not a hanging offense now is it? image

MUST BE A HOOCH THING.....

I don't care what they say, I still think you must be a girl.:crybaby:

Kenny he sort of sounds like "the church lady" on SNL... I think Medical Marijuana might help him be a better person

I'm thinking the private messages that Stuart gets are a bigger pain in the butt for him than whats posted out here in the light, and by a large margin.

I brought it up for the same reason I often bring up my own baldness (or arrogance) or Stuart's tallness, or yours and Playa's frequent, girlish drama queen acts...

Joe's walker does NOT define him - it is an ATTRIBUTE of his being.

His walker is irrelevant, quite frankly.

Larry asked a question:

I find it unbelievable how easy you guys go on Joe. What is the favoritism ?? ..... I think I know why, but that is no excuse

What I made was a PERSONAL OBSERVATION in response:

People often tip-toe on eggshells when dealing with persons who have physical disabilities

Now, what exactly about my observation offended you so?

Or, are you going to challenge the premise of my statement that some (many?) people act differently around physically different people?

I think neither is the case- I think what you REALLY wanted to do is exactly what you did- focus on me, jump on your high-horse, and then try to demonstrate to the world that you are a morally superior person - Same thing you always do.

You see, this isn't about Joe, and it isn't about Bill - it's about JERRY's need to be the ethics and morality police, and to make sure that there is fairness and equality in the world, 24x7...

You have more hair than me.... how come you never come to MY defense when people make fun of my baldness....?
jerry
Baldness wise we are pretty much a tie....you guys are saying Joe acted out because he uses a walker to get around while he rehabs. In reality all he did was throw a spitball at that clever old fox Bill. Bill is the problem here not Joe...he was causing trouble. If i had a high horse he would be crapping in your boat right now...

That is NOT so...

That is nothing more than YOUR interpretation of what you think I MEANT.... but it has nothing to do with reality.

NOBODY said that, and in my own case, I never implied it, nor did I ever even think it.

Your mind reading skills SUCK, Jerry... I'm sorry to have to be the one to break this news to you.

Larry asked why people seem to treat Joe differently, and I made an observation about human behavior (in general) towards people with physical differences. You did not challenge the basis of my premise- instead you tried to make it out like I was objectifying Joe over the condition of his legs- and to that, all I can say is that you clearly don't understand me. I have NEVER treated ANYONE with less human dignity because of their appearance, race, physical ability, or even their freaking baldness.

The condition of Joe's legs (and the existence of his walker) are NOT reasonable excuses for his sometimes poor social behavior in the forum.

In fact, these two conditions are totally IRRELEVANT and unrelated.

I have no idea why YOU decided to try and make it look like they are relevant... actually- scratch that- I think I do know why. It's because (I think) you like to gravitate toward drama like a 13 year old girl.

Mexico Joe- If/when you read this, I hope that if/when we ever meet in RP, that we will shake hands and talk about fishing, golf, DIY bait tank design, and girls in bikinis.... you know, the kind of stuff MEN talk about, and not:

"He said, and then I said, and she's all, so I'm all, and then Jerry came in and he's like... totally lame... what----everrrrrrr"

God, I HATE Jersey Shore.

A little boy was excited about his first day at school. So excited in fact, that only a few minutes after class started, he realized that he desperately needed to go to the bathroom. So he raised his hand politely to ask if he could be excused. Of course the teacher said yes, but asked him to be quick. Five minutes later he returned, looking more desperate and embarrassed. "I can't find it", he admitted. The teacher sat him down and drew him a little diagram to where he should go and asked him if he will be able to find it now. The boy looked at the diagram, said "yes" and goes on his way. Five minutes later he returned to the class room and says to the teacher "I can't find it". Frustrated, the teacher asked Jon, a boy who has been at the school for awhile, to help him find the bathroom. So two fellas go together and five minutes later they both return and sit down at their seats. The teacher asks Jon, "Well, did you find it?" Jon is quick with his reply: "Oh sure, he just had his boxer shorts on backwards"

Just a simple observation but it appears that those who fish or frequent the fishing forum (and actually have a take) have a more laid back personality and make a hell of a lot more sense and less desire to stir up ****. Except for good ole Happy. I think he just liked getting out and stroking his pole. Nonetheless, fish more, enjoy good food & drink and enjoy the company of others.
