A formal announcement, with a commitment from at least one cruise operator, is expected sometime in February, with construction to commence in March or April. Two 330 meter platforms will accommodate ships capable of carrying 4000 passengers, plus 2500 crew.Projected completion date is January, 2015
That's the downside. I've been thinking about the typical cruise ship passenger and all that comes with them. Think of all the bars and restaurants that will open in the desert. For the local economy its great - for trying to keep the tranquility of what we have it's not the best case scenario. I would hope that they would try to control growth in a beneficial way. I've been on one cruise in my life 20 years ago and never wanted to go again. Trapped on a ship with gluttenous Americans isn't my idea of a good time. Getting off the ship in St. Martin was an physical assault of of vendors, hawkers, menus in your face, duty free jewelry, alcohol, designer bags and perfume. I hope PP never becomes that. But, I realize how hypocritical I sound, when I think of people like LadyJeeper and El Gato, who miss the "real" PP of the past.
Remember this will be a departure location, not a stop on the tour. I think the best impact will be for jobs for locals, both construction and operations. Seems to me that departures would be scheduled to accomodate drivers from AZ and Cali and not require overnight land stay in Penasco prior to departure. That would add significantly to the cost of the cruise for the vacationers. Will not hurt local shopping but my guess is that it will not be a huge boost in those areas of the local economy. Bet they will save the cash for stops in Cabo or where ever. Probably will be a lot of tour busses doing transport as well. Should expose the town to new clientele though.
I for one think if it is properly implemented that it will be a positive booster. I know for a fact that it will add local shuttle jobs and tour vans just for quick excursions into town which even though it will bring competition to that arena will be a great thing for us at Penasco Recreation as it will add legitimacy to what we do to the local government.
Seems to me likely that the airport would finally get utilized - there would be regular commercial flights from different American cities coming and going.
What I see as the biggest impact for PP is it will expose us to people who would have never thought of coming here. Since they will be coming to board a ship they will not even have us in mind but after seeing us they may want to come back to vacation. Even though a home port will bring some money and jobs to PP I see it more as a marketing tool IF we make PP a little better than it is today. IMHO

Time to clean up Sonoyta and all of the rusted out chain-link fencing and trash around the resorts and in town!
Dry Heat, It is Pic #12 from the new photos of the Home Port: Puerto Penasco Home Port | Facebook Puerto Penasco Home Port post, that was posted by Jim R. If that is going to happen to our area and I hope it is a mistake, better sell before everything becomes worth a whole lot less and time to look at some other places in Mexico to vacation. Bottom line is the RP we all love will become a money well for those who own the well if that does happen.
2 for 1 drink tokes For every bag of cruise ship garbage collected in front of the pigeon coops at my soon to open restaurant in santo Tomas...60 miles away from this giant project .

If I may ask sir, what is referenced thee with here with the term if I may be so blunt as to inquire of the meaning of "pigeon coops" thereby being no such reference in the given Czechoslovakian trait pronouns, if thee must perform a research of said inquire there is no time table as such placed on thee,
a crazy, dog hating exiled forum member used the term to warn that they built two towers too many at a project named after said bird. on this project I think it remains to be seen how this works, The political parties are both not in lock step, the Governor has raised taxes on the working man who is not too happily about it and with only a forth of the money on the table,no environmental blessing,no thought about border waits or the massive tide changes effects on sand movement....well I think it will be a wild and crazy ride
Hey ever been down here during the week, deader than hell, every town grows and has to have some type of commercial type Business.
. Read the first article..interesting....what is Cedo saying? As I remember they stopped the pier in 2009 because of reef damage issues. Not saying it is not the way to go but this is not a for sure winner
Not that anyone cares what I think, but I've decided I'm anti-home port after seeing the pictures posted on the Port's Facebook page. The negatives outweigh the benefits. I just wish they could find a way to help the local economy without all the negative side effects that this will bring.
I hope to be selling white castle toilet paper dispensers around the area!
Yeah, I guess if it's going to happen one way or the other, we might as well figure out how to make some money from it, right? Maybe I'll go the tried and true route: "Your Name on a Grain of Rice".
Not a fan of this project, The places I have been that have cruise ships are brutal with, the locals being in your face with whatever they are hustling. That's relaxing.

It's not fun for people like us, but you can't blame the locals for wanting to make $$$. I feel very conflicted over this whole thing, although the route looks fantastic. I'm not a cruise fan in the least - went once, never wanted to go again, but I'd love a Sea of Cortez cruise with the stops it looks like they're going to make.

Brokenwave, since Guaymus is set up to fuel big boats, I understand the cruise ships will take on fuel there. Sorry, I posted under the wrong message.

Full price, of course. :) I'm excited about the home port. But besides the environmental concerns, there are archaeological sites dating back at least 5000 years with invaluable intact buried deposits spread across the route of the the proposed canal. No reason to halt the project, but the data on the peninsula's firsties should be recovered in advance. Yeah, I have an archaeological firm that could do it, so full disclosure there. Just want to see INHA or any other archaeologists taking care of that irreplaceable human record in advance.
I heard Guaymus the other day, sometimes where there's smoke there's fire....but not always.
people in other parts of Sonora that are seeing their taxes go up and the money used for questionable projects like this one or flat out graft also hate it is called"home port".
(Dup of other post) I was hoping they would have a port in Los Mochis- people could get off the cruise and take the train to Copper Canyon. That would be a great draw.

. Try writing Topolobampo on a postcard then have room to write anything else. Still maybe some small ship cruising will get going to places like this. in Egypt we took a sailing ship down the Nile that had 12 cabins....pretty fun

Jerry, it was on the map of stops. Thats one of the reasons, i think passengers will be able to board at any port, because of Copper Canyon's european visitors.

Cruising Mexico - Sailing Blog - N. Pacific Coast Sailing Destinations. Sailer stops in the Northern Sea...I also was thinking how much Euros like the North African Desert ( in Amsterdam they have botanical garden of desert plants too). It makes me think the Pinacates might get loved to death too but if managed right people would love camping out there nomad style.

Eco Tourism is getting big, here in Mexico. A company from Hermosillo that promotes, that kind of tourism saw my pictures form Campo Mosqueda and contacted me, about using one of the pictures.
Those types of cruises I could get behind and sign up for one. Small cruise ships of less than 200 people are great, the mega ships of 3000-4500 people just are just like a cattle round up.
