I have only driven to Rocky Point at night. I come through Mexicalli and once I get on hiway 3 I rarely see anyone.

Rick if you have a flat on a road with a two foot drop off on each side at night in Mexico itchanges your view on night driving.

Jerry,
I would not drive hiway 2 at night any more, but the coastal hiway has nice shoulders. The real hazzard on hiway 3 is sand drifts. I actually got two wheels off the road on hiway 2 in a work truck and it woke me up.

As the Lobos guys will attest to,there is a place on the coastal as you go over a big dune on the outskirts of lobos that sand on the road causes you to adjust quickly or die

When Joe and I went on that section soon after it was finished I was thankfull I wasn't hauling through there at night or we very well could have went for a bad ride.

We drove from LaPaz to RP over a three day period. I must have been young and dumb because we did a lot of night driving. At the time, we went through 17 Federale checkpoints between LaPaz and RP but the Federales were a welcome sight when compared to the insane bus drivers and the completely crazy truck drivers ( not to mention the sand dunes on the road, animals, potholes, washouts, hitchhikers that stand in the way.....) It was truly an adventure and I am talking myself back into making this drive again :)

I learned at a very young age that the mexican truck drivers like their half of the road in the middle. this was back before the toll road from nogales to hermosillo. driving back at night from san carlos or kino bay after 3 day weekends as a kid with my mom and dad was an adventure that my dad hated but we never left early. we stayed out on the water as long as we possibly could.

I drove the Devil's Spine years back, at night from Durango down to Matzatlan. Some of the most beautiful country in all of Mexico with a switchback highway just like the Alps. That road would have hosted an incredible cross country race. The log trucks drove at night because they had to use both lanes to make the switchbacks and could watch for oncoming headlights. Several hours of blap blap blap jake brakes going down the mountain. Driving a rental crapbox out of Torreon did not inspire confidence but the truckers would hit the turn signal when it was safe to pass. It was nuts, steep up on the right and steep down on the left with a narrow road. I was reluctant to pass but my companion assured me it was the way to do it. I was sure we'd go off the edge to a firey death. In retrospect I wish I could make the drive again, with a more interesting vehicle, an old TR3 or even a Miata but the new highway is finished so no more Devils Spine.

Article says it's the area with the big dip and large antenna, haven't been out that far in a while.
