Friday weather here - cloudy and BLOWING. Changed a bilge pump out in the boat yesterday and thought I was gonna die of heat stroke. Thinking of heading down to La Pinta for some shore fishing today, no way the boat is going out. Oh well...
Well... THAT was an adventure! Went down by the oyster farms, trying to get out to the mouth of the estuary to fish. Hit a very soft spot of accumulated sand and buried the ass end of the truck. Hiked up the trail and found somebody to give us a bit of a pull to get out, after much digging. You just can't say enough good things about the willingness of the locals to help a stupid gringo like myself! Gave them a couple of 20's for their willingness to save my sorry butt.
Decided to go down to the Mirador beach. WOW! You could surf those waves! No fishing, but a 12 pack of ice-cold Indio and crashing waves on the beach, what's not to like? We were literally the only people on the beach as far as you could see. And who finds us? One determined beach vendor!! But he happened to have one thing I needed - Seal bombs! After last time out with Dave and having fish getting raped from us by the sea lions, yeah baby... bring it!
You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you get what you need!
It's all good!!
Well a windy day in Mexico typically beats an August day here as long as your near the water. I can usually find a wind break shore fishing around the tip of Cholla Bay. If not I figure I can pass another day by drinking beer at JJ's. Stay cool
Seal bomb - basically an M-80 firecracker in a red, round waterproof hard plastic shell, with a waterproof fuse. Makes a BIG boom! Generally, not always, scares the sea lions away from the boat, but doesn't physically hurt them or blow them up or anything.
As far as scaring the fish - not on the deeper reefs. The fish are a couple hundred feet down and sound (knowing this from my Navy anti-submarine warfare days) bounces off the thermocline (area of colder water under the warmer water on top) and reflects back up to the surface.
Spent some beach time today (no fishing) and ended up face-planting in the sand a couple times trying to body surf the crashing waves. Doh! It was fun though and actually got a couple good rides. Wind seems to be slacking now (of course, too late to go out). We get back to the casita and I head into the shower and the wife is laughing at me -- "You've got seaweed all over your butt!" Too funny!!
I would be against throwing mini-dynamite at these guys myself but the world is a cruel place
The world is a crueler place when the fat bastards steal a big amberjack, the biggest white seabass of the day, and the only red snapper I've seen in a year. The sea lions need to feed themselves, not learn to rely on the fishermen for an easy meal. That's how nature works, no matter how PETA you feel about it, Jerry.
Went fishing in Cabo for the first time, caught 3 Marlin (released) 2 Dorado and a Tuna. Fun day with my 11 year old grandson. It was his birthday present and am sure one he will never forget.

Well if I was fishing to feed my family I might think differently but picture throwing one of those in Scottsdale at a aggressive pit bull...you would be on the inside of the old crowbar motel looking out.If you guys didn't kill all the sharks it wouldn't be such a problem (well basically the Jap fishing fleet in the 80s)

Stuart, how much do those bad boys cost from the vendor ?
Damn sea lions are a nuisance. I can't tell you how many times I've spent an hour making bait and another hour getting anchored up in the dropoff to have sea lions come, strip all if our rigs, and clean out the bait well in no time. I've tried relocating miles away, but they keep finding us and can easily ruin an expensive day of fishing. Very frustrating.

$5 each in quantity... $7 each individually. Figuring an investment of driving down there, launch fees, ice, gas for the boat, etc. going into the $500-$600 range at minimum, it's worth it. And as Shawno pointed out, moving to a different spot isn't always the answer because the sea lions just tend to follow you, or a whole different set pops up at your new location.

Sounds very much like what has always been called a Cherry Bomb in this part of the world and they have been around at least since the 50's....I've seen them blow commodes to smithereens.
Seals aren't subs Stuart and the way sound carries in shallow warm water I'm sure there's more than one Seal out there that say's, huh, speak up, I can't hear you.
Cherry bombs... Light them and run, DON'T throw them!
Back in the 50's some of us "ditch runner" kids would throw them in the canals down in Phoenix to stun Carp up to the surface. Oh, and don't throw them in a pool to scare your friends no matter how funny you think it might be.
The solution to the egregious behavior of the sea lions is simple. Have a Sea Lion hunt and kill the fat Bas#*#ds off. How dare they interfere with Nature and man's god given right to harvest the seas as they see fit. Those Sea Lions are doing the devil's work causing all that extra expense of a fishing trip, not to mention the disappointment of not killing a bunch of fish. Yes it's clearly unnatural that those sea lions should attempt to eat whatever fish they see. They need to understand that the bait on a line is off limits to them. Yes, a Sea Lion Hunt, that's the ticket. Catch them on shore and you can club them to death too. convince people that there is something in a sea lion that they can eat to improve sexual performance and the harvest will be on.
Any MORE bleeding heart comments??? Good grief! You people take stuff way too seriously then fret over it and continue to beat it like a dead horse. :deadhorse:
I learned about seal bombs from the Mexicans. And oh, the pirate ship that loves to toss them off in shallow water just outside the harbor.
No sea lions were injured in the posting of this message. But if there happened to be one nearby, I'd surely club it to death.
Need a few of these in the waters around La Pinta to make the seals tow the line. Sure looks that is La Pinta in the background. Seals be warned. Fishermen rejoice!:sunny:
This thread is nothing but an online promo for Shark Week, which started yesterday on the Discovery Channel. If you haven't seen their advertisement for "Snuffy the Seal", watch it, it's a hoot! Tag line this year? "It's bad week to be a seal!"

Make sure you save me a few sea lion staeks. I hear it help hair grow.

Wow, this weekend was beautiful-I have never been down in August without being miserable. But this weekend was dry, cool at night, perfect. Enjoyed the meteor shower, the water was not too warm, and the crescent moon setting was bright orange- I've never have seen anything like that.

Save some for me next week. I have been dreading the heat.
One man was killed the other pretty messed up. Making the Sly Stalone movie.
I just read about it. It was a tragic accident involving what one article said was supposed to be a fake explosive device. These guys were talented stuntmen, not idiots.
Better a fire cracker than the way the commercial fisherman handled the problem in the 90s in Northern California.
The small commercial Salmon fishermen up there almost all carried 22 rifles and shot the seals. My dad being one of them.
The ones I know of fished out of Patricks Point.

What talent? Getting blown up, anybody can do that.o_O
Very windy all night and this morning with waves crashing Playa Encanto. Had a max wind gust of 41 MPH @8:30AM and currently blowing @ 27 to 30MPH right now. Going to be like this all day and night according to forecast.
Great...... I'm leaving at 11:30 to drive down......Just what I wanted to do, drive a tall, big tired Jeep loaded to the gills in a windstorm.......Argh!

My son also. I think I'm going to recommend he wait a day. ADOT warning on most roads down to here today:
My son just called and took my advice. I think all who are headed down today think about waiting til morning. I don't think it is worth trying the trip today.
God Speed Chari. Winds on SR 85 at the Landfill are about 15 to 20.
No reports between there and PP, but at 28 sustained at PP. Try getting behind a southbound vehicle
and let him shield you. It's coming from the SW. Blowing like crazy here. Wish I were going with you.
Just checked my weather station here at the casa in Encanto, still blowing pretty hard at 24 mph. Hope it settles down by morning, today was not fun on the beach. But the papas relleno at tacos brisas sure helped salvage the day.
