And a Security expert pens this worrying note'

"Raul Benitez, a security expert at Mexico’s National Autonomous University, said that “Puerto Penasco is an area with a lot of movement, a lot of traffic, and it’s perfect for setting up a corridor to sell cocaine, heroin or marijuana and ship it into the United States.” As the Mexican government tries to shut off the other big corridors in Texas and California, “the Sonora corridor was the one left for the Sinaloa cartel,” he said.

It appears at least one other gang is now trying to move in on the corridor.

Mexican law enforcement officials declined to say who was behind this week’s mass killing, but Coulson said it might be the Beltran Leyva gang, which controlled the area around Mexicali to the east before two of its top gang leaders were arrested or killed.

“My best guess is this is the Beltran Leyvas trying to re-establish control in Sonora,” Coulson said.

I know this is a tangled political web . . . Apparently I just don't get it . . . But you'd think if Nieto is so concerned with new commerce and across-the-borders opportunity, to the extent of staging dramatic "security" events in Penasco and the "capture" of El Chappo, why would this (consequential, inevitable) war have been instigated, and then go unchecked?

Take a look at the banks. They can't say no either. They are making billions laundrying the drug money. The feds catch them and all they get is a slap on the wrist. The next day they are back at it.

LA SANTA MUERTE followers in Sonoyta that want an edge in the fight for the plaza are rumored to have been taking pictures of kids at the school .This of course is crazy but it might not be a good idea to be taking pictures in Sonoyta today.

US banks. Banks worldwide. Probably the bank you do business with. It appears they all do it. Google it. It's unbelievable what they are getting away with.

http://www.globalresearch.ca/money-laundering-and-the-drug-trade-the-role-of-the-banks/5334205

"One thing the American government has not done is to prosecute the largest banks in the world for supporting the drug cartels by washing billions of dollars of their blood stained money. As Narco sphere journalist Bill Conroy has observed banks are ”where the money is” in the global drug war.

HSBC, Western Union, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase & Co, Citigroup, Wachovia amongst many others have allegedly failed to comply with American anti-money laundering (AML) laws.

The Mexican drug cartels have caught the headlines again and again due to their murderous activities. The war between the different drug cartels and the war between the cartels and government security forces has spilled the blood of tens of thousands of innocent people. The drug cartels would find it much harder to profit from their murderous activity if they didn’t have too big to fail banks willing to wash their dirty money.

In March 2010 Wachovia cut a deal with the US government which involved the bank being given fines of $160 million under a ”deferred prosecution” agreement. This was due to Wachovia’s heavy involvement in money laundering moving up to $378.4 billion over several years. Not one banker was prosecuted for illegal involvement in the drugs trade."

Money and the drug business in Mexico.
There has been a lot of interest in the money laundering stuff, but here is something I find more interesting to speculate about.

Plug in a number of dollars that come into Mexican economy as a result of drug sales. There are lot of estimates, no one really knows, including the cartel people as they do not share accounting details. There is general agreement that it is a very large number.

Keeping it in cash is problematic, subject to theft or discovery by the police. Can't deposit into the local bank for safe keeping. A very significant part of this money goes directly into the Mexican economy in a myriad of ways. Wages, purchases of vehicles, cattle, boats, land, homes. etc. Building stuff like homes, commercial buildings creating a second tier of purchases and wages. Investing in ongoing businesses, farms, ranches, fishing boats creating more jobs. I think this money filters into most regions of Mexico, adding to the economy in a very significant way, even taxes. You can read about comments made by individual people here who depend for survival on a small income for services rendered to the cartels. I know for a fact that many of the middle managers spend what they get as quickly as possible, buying vehicles, boats, motorcycles and stuff for family members like homes, vehicles and putting stuff in the name of family members. Keeping cash is dangerous.

Now imagine that tomorrow all of this money stops flowing into Mexico. What would you imagine the effect to be? My guess is that is one of the largest contributors to the overall economy of Mexico and if it dried up there would be an economic disaster with lost jobs and wages, major and minor purchases of goods and services and second tier jobs.

Similar logic in the US but maybe more loss of enforcement jobs, vehicle purchases, supplies, fuel, etc. etc. Certainly many millions of dollars.

Now surely some pointy head govt. accountant or politician here or in the US has thought about this problem as it would create problems in the US as well as here. Wouldn't this provide some interest and motivation on the part of governments to NOT stop the cartel business? Not to mention the business that profit indirectly for drug sales.

Hard to express how much I dislike this style of writing:

Mexico is in the grip of a murderous drug war that has killed over 150,000 people since 2006. It is one of the most violent countries on earth. This drug war is a product of the transnational drug trade which is worth up to $400 billion a year and accounts for about 8% of all international trade.

How about this alternative:

Over 150,000 Mexican people have been murdered to satisfy the insatiable appetite for illegal drugs in the US. This war on Mexicans and attendant murders have been motivated and supported by US criminal drug users. Every criminal drug purchase in the US contributes money and motivation to this mayhem. A generally and statistically safe and peaceful country has been negatively impacted by US criminals making some towns unsafe for children to be in the streets. etc....

Dejan "trembling" to Sonoyta members of the State Security Police Post PESP by a commander named Varela, complaints everywhere I leave the operational frustrated conducted in that border region, "acorrientandose" said group leader, letting their stolen items to perfumes in some raids they made.

Complaints of citizens have been expected in various social networks, which suggests that "robbery" was the next item in the operation conducted in Sonoyta border.

Alert citizens Altar, Sonora, this group just settle their real in this population, after leaving practically shaking Sonoyta residents, their actions come to tarnish the work of state corporation.

Very unfortunate that these actions are carried out within the framework of impunity unfortunately are PESP authorities who rule this region to fight organized crime, who looks more like coming to the region to loot and rob who leave.

And that to combat organized crime, as is also seen, as the group that heads this Group Leader named Varela, seem to have a strong link with the criminal groups, not grasping or hour, unless to "give away" some kilos of pot to present work.

From what I've been reading it seems like the bad guys are waiting until after midnight to start their shootouts. Almost every night for the past week there have been reports of gunfire in Colonias Papago and Hombres Blancos. Last night the suspected gunmen drove out of town at high speeds to the Penasco highway.

Not posting this to scare anyone, just to be aware - do not drive after dark. Also, just to make a point, Jerry has NOT been posting about each and every incident. So before anyone goes pointing the finger that Jerry's a hater, think again!

I absolutely hate to hear about stuff like this, it makes me frightened to go to Mexico; however after saying that, I am really cognizant that I am in a foreign country and I behave as such! I never do the border at night and party at home ( I'm a drag, lol) knot saying I don't get drunk, rally stinking drunk, but in party with my hub and we eat pollo Luis and drink tokens of tequila and walk the beach and it's pretty damn magical! I don't need to hang with kids to have a good time! Anyway, back to the subject; I wish the news reports weren't always so scary ! I try to remember how many crimes there were in Phoenix the weekend before and how I just ignore the reports, but it does freak me out, you like to think of your vacation spot as being idyllic not filled with murder and heinous crime.

At the end of the President’s speech, those in attendance were surprised by a woman who took advantage of the silence to repeatedly shout, “I am hungry and thirsty for justice!” Though various security elements first tried to calm her, the President himself made his way to speak with her. The concerns were those of Mrs. Leticia Montes, leader of the Aquilas Serdan Association of Communal Landowners (ejidatarios), who demanded to be heard concerning the lack of support for landowners in the area that forms part of the buffer zone of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve.

I wouldn't cancel, but that's just me. I probably would not travel during darkness, but that's not an issue this time of year. But if you're skeptical and scared, what's the point of forcing the issue and not enjoying what pleasure and joy Penasco has to offer.

Really! That bullshit story you wrote about in Caborca by the chuch was just two trucks doing burn outs in front of the church

Caborca is a mess too....guys just wave off the cops by saying who they are affiliated with...wish it was not so but it is...people are just sick of it and speaking out you needed to be on the highway in December as 50 cal rounds wizzed over head like my friends were to get a feeling for the everyday life of the Coastal region. I am just saying it is a time to play smart.

I agree with what you say bout the Bandidos, but Sonoyta is one of the most patrolled roads in North America, I only know of one Norte Americano ever shot on the road from Sonoyta to Penasco! Maybe someone on here will correct me, Happened a while back and it involved Norte Americano's.

Its from the mexican army , sayin' don't let the narco, gun runners and such take your tranquility, turn the thugs in and you will remain anonymous. This blogger from sonoyta is only reporting anything bad and everything that the army or city cops do in not mentioned, like he has a real bad political agenda against the current admin. You have to read the comments on that FB page to get the real facts.

that was me sharing info boosters won't because they don't want people to know what is going on...The blogger believes the Military can be trusted but local law cannot.Anyone who has ever dealt with them knows he is telling the truth.I realize his backing the political party out of power plays a part in this but the majority of the clashes he posts have happened.

AC, the one you are talking about was strange... it happened just before ejido nayarit. At the rest area..But if you consider Mexicans as North Americans, which they are, there have been a few more..

If this is what your refering to,
it happened mid 90s, it was a supposed drug deal, a women was left alive, 2 guys were shot in the middle of the road by the 2 roadside chapels north of the 2 bridges.

Well from what i recall it was more of a DV dispute, The wife had a falling out with the old man and just plugged him, made up a blogger story about getting ripped off and ran up to Phoenix as soon as she could, The Mexican police were asking for her to come back and she did not comprehend anything after the incident.

But remember, there was a Mexican kid also with them, the boyfriend of the pairs daughter...

So she was Hispanic, still a norte americana, unless born in Mexico, I'm not saying Brokenwave is off, who knows the real facts, I'm surprised our in house Raconteur (KENNY) has not kicked in since he's been coming down since the days of Evangelina!

She got pretty testy with us on the old forum. There was an awful lot about her story that simply never made any sense and she suddenly developed a bad case of lockjaw about the whole incident. But yes, I remember it well because it happened at the Shrine.
MIRAMAR
It happened in the year 2000 (I remember because a lot of our daughter's friends weren't allowed to come to Penasco after that) :

That whole incident was weird from the first reports, everytime you read something about it the story changed hey I was only off a few years. It just seemed longer than that.

We were in Peñasco with a caravan and were heading North and we saw this probably less than 15 minutes after it happened so did about 16 couples behind us in our caravan (the body was still in the road). At the time we were told it was a drug related /love triangle mess that went bad.
Seeing it first hand was tough. I will say though that every single one of those Rvers in my caravan came back down with us the following season.
HILL BOY
That was a long time ago my take on this was a drug deal gone bad. Sorry but if you are going to play that game you are going to pay.

I've either got to quit drinking or start drinking more. I understand the Spanish version better than the English and I don't speak it.

We have been partnered with Chapo...gave him guns and he was allowed to move weed and coke via Caborca and Puerto Penasco. Now the wolves are at the door...

"The same partner told El Chapo operator and administrative leader of the criminal organization he served, in which he also was responsible "for providing security to keep out Beltran Leyva and Los Zetas to the city of Nogales, in charge of kidnappings and executions. "

He explained that "the drug we passed to the United States came from Sinaloa", and that there is a safe house between Puerto Lobos and Caborca to the seashore, where he saw a boat with 400 kilos of marijuana, a yacht and four jet sky where in March 2010 had to hide, because it would have the Federal Police operatives in Caborca, and would have to wait for them to finish, and then continue with their activities that also involved a guy named El Gordo 32 ".

Sandoval Interial also revealed that cocaine is racked in the area "comes from Panama, Puerto Peñasco reaches hence the ground up to Mexicali or San Luis Rio Colorado, then brincarla America", transactions for which also was necessary to pay local authorities. (El Universal)"

Heating up again...."
Yesterday heavy fighting between gunmen and police in Sonoyta in Loma Bonita colony left as stock four detainees, weapons and a vehicle insured, registered facts around about 16:30 Saturday 18 October.

The facts transcend unofficially version and witnesses who were raised on 15th Street and Avenue Mario Morua, which started the brawl between gunmen first, hence the miscreants fled towards Obregon Street exit east of the city toward the Desert Sonora, being chased by members of different corporations that had already been alerted, culminating near the municipal cemetery where they were arrested by the army and Municipal Police, after confronting the authorities with bullets.

The place was assured a Trail Blazer gray, addressing the four subjects who were wounded apparently by gunfire, whom I was assure them four assault rifles, Ak-47, known as "goat horn", a rifle .223 caliber, 4 metal disc chargers for Ak-47, 20 metallic chargers Ak-47 8 plastic boots Ak-47.

The subjects were brought under heavy security in ambulances of the Red Cross to the city of Puerto Penasco, Sonora, whom transcends could be Ivan Almazan, alias "El Chacarron" who was the driver of the vehicle, Daniel Lazcano Gonzales, Néstor Pablo Quintero Ramos and Pablo Ibarra Arechiga.

The ongoing violence in Sonoyta, every day continues to grow, with a cry of citizens who ask stop executions and crimes where the citizen is at the mercy of organized crime in this border town. More important to note however is that this time the authorities of the three levels of government acted quickly and managed to secure these dangerous individuals. Photo Taken from Facebook

Note this occured last night....the cops just disappeared.....To warn people and as an experiment I posted on Rockypoint360 Facebook page.....the warning lasted 30 seconds before it was deleted .....bread and circuses!

Can't imagine that happening, I don't think that people that live in Penasco care about Sonoyta, because like Roberto they never cross back, did you try posting on the http://www.borderlandbeat.com/ forum?

That was a while back. My point is theseTourist magazines donot offer much in the way toward helpful advice when the possibility of danger, fraud or inconvenience appears.....Chief Brody from the Jaws movie would not have lasted a day in Puerto Penasco...trouble maker..
