Another beautiful, calm day, lots of whales, blue, blue water, and sweaty hot!!! We had to use diamond jigs as we could not catch any live mackerel for bait, but still had a great day. Nice triple hookup on big reds. Chuck caught a monster sardinera +25#. We had a mix of gold spots and yellowtail to round out the day.
Captain Ralph endeavored to swing a 20# red, the red shook the 8oz. jig in mid air and was thus set free. Ralph on the other hand managed to catch his own elbow with two of the three big treble hook barbs buried deep. We decided not to air vac him out and ripped the hooks out using the flying string technique. We said, "we feel your pain." It was painful for us to see a grown man cry.

Grateful are we to experience the bounty and beauty of this special place.

Nice catch, congrats Chuck on that catch of day! You know Ralph don't take it kindly being out fished, maybe that's why he hooked himself, Tks for posting Ted.

We didn't do so well on Saturday, started out with a big grouper break off 13 miles out and then headed out 40 miles and found Shawno having trouble with his boat so we lent him a phone and headed to 51 where we fished hard for gold spot s for several hours but at the high tide the current was too strong to hold bottom. This was true at the 43 also but we did manage to hook up to a 8 ft mako for 25 minutes but he finally made a run and snapped the line.
You guys have some quality snappers there Ted. Jigging and diamond jigs seem to be the ticket when there's no bait like this weekend. Good job.

What exactly would you do with an 8ft Mako?

Eat it! Mako shark is fantastic eating, the best of all the sharks with thresher a close 2nd. You may not realize it, but shark USED to be the primary fish used in fish tacos until their numbers fell from overfishing. We've had this discussion before about makos being served, even in restaurants. Very nice white meat with mild flavor, if you didn't know better, you might think it was swordfish.

Lucky for the makos, one that size is almost impossible to catch unless you're specifically fishing for them with heavy steel leader and a huge hook. Catch them on "normal" fishing tackle and you've got about a 100 to 1 shot of actually landing it.
