The guys down here always want me to buy a panga from el Golfo the fishermen sell after getting new ones from the Feds for not killing everything up there. They tell me we can get a great one for 5k,put a relative in his boat and he runs the new boat and between grouper and blue shrimp I could make 50 k a year.....not sure I believe them
Jerry, Are they selling the pangas used for fishing and shrimping or the ones for doing runs out to the mother ship to bring in the mota from El Golfo?

The first ones...second choice seem to be full of bullet holes.
I know this was sort of a stupid suggestion but I do think a service that worked out a way to get premium fresh seafood to high end restaurants in Phoenix and Tucson could mark it up enough to make a good peso or two.....the world always needs another middleman
Daily boat trips from sandy beach to malecon so people dont have to drive.
I REALLY like this idea... Only question would be where to pick up/drop off at each location? How long do you think it would take each way? Considering regular taxis are charging around $15 for this, I'm sure there's potential here.
Back to the water taxi idea... A local should give that a shot, maybe partner with a restaurant in the Malecon ($2 off meal with boat ride, etc). I'm sure somebody has an extra panga lying around, would just need to create some sort of signage. How much business could those banana boat drivers really be pulling in anyway?
Other than that, you could also explore some online, freelance type work depending on your skill set.

Where would I start to look for online work? Any ideas?
Making a living here is not real easy. Forget all the professions. Construction used to be a possibility but is on hard times now. Maintenance and repair work creates a lot of possibilities but there is lots of competition.
I have seen an ad for and talked to a guy who said he was setting up a call center. Think there was a billboard in the Malecon at one time and ads in RP Times.
You will want to explore carefully the regs. for what is required for a non citizen to work in Mexico.
If thinking about a business I believe you have to have a Mex. corporation and perhaps a Mex. partner, not sure. Overlay of govt. crap for this too. Tred with care here as if you step on a citizen's business they can create problems. If you are seen as a competitor to a certain segment here you could have a big problem.
The Mayan Palace hires. One US guy told me they offered him a job as a truck driver but who knows. He was a BSer.
So true Roberto, unless you bring your internet job down with you you're out of luck, I know some weekend campers want it to stay primitive around here but we do need jobs from the homeport to get things going and the town to move forward.
Despite the name, many men seem to use it as well. One thing to remember, a lot online jobs won't pay much ~$10/hr... but given the wages in RP, I'm assuming something like this would be better.
Also, I've had some friends that obtained a basic certificate for teaching abroad called TOEFL. Decent chance there could be a school down there looking for somebody to teach English

I've always wondered about this. Wouldn't you need an American IP address? Obviously a strong/fast/reliable internet would be a MUST. I loosely know how sh!tty the internet is in Mexico but I bet some of our LOCALS could fill us in on the fast/reliable part. I know the internet down at Jerry's works awesome one minute and then doesnt work for hours on end. Usually during the day time it lags and or is non existent. Shit, I'd make $10/hr and fish everyday. Fine with me... I might be joining Garyd.
If you are fluent in reading and writing spanish an online document translator is another online business. Met a couple that does this in mazatlan. We have had to have documents translated for immigration and used an online service.
I have some. ".....breaking rocks in the hot sun....."
Gary I was thinking about this and wonder if a person had a product condo/ home owners would really need that he could get a wholesale distributor ship for in the states and deliver and install in Mexico...smart thermos/cameras or things like this..https://www.touchofmodern.com/sales/mylight-b711a028-6e60-42eb-b73b-ee4475c8f89a/bed-light-deluxe.....something the regular guy could not install and work that cost into the total price...claim install is free....

I used to tutor high school students for AIMS. There were people in my group that had telephone jobs teaching English to non native speakers. I actually interviewed and was offered a job about 5 years ago. Then they paid $11 a hr. Basical you had about five students that you converesed with everyday. Mostly they were from Korea or India. YOu would spend about 15 min emailsing then an article from the paper or people magazine and then they would email you a review and you would correct it. Then they would call you and you would converse about 20 min. You have one hour total with each student includidng paper work. You can find those jobs on the web.
The water taxi idea, while intriguing, will only last until the first drunken gringo falls off and drowns. Plus, pangas are unwieldy to get in and out of. No dock at Sandy Beach (or the Malecon, for that matter) and if you want to go out for a nice dinner, you aren't gonna want to traipse through the surf to jump in a panga. Add to that you are also at the mercy of the weather. When the wind blows... when it's hot and humid... people want their AC! Just sayin'...
Roberto's comments about working in Mexico as a gringo are spot on. It's VERY tough. I know I wanted to do charter fishing and looked pretty hard at it. About the only way to do it easily is to marry a Mexican and run the business in their name. Even then, the point about competition is also spot on. They can run you out of business and out of town. If you get over those hurdles, you still have the ones the Mex govt. throws at you with taxes and the banking aspects.
I would firmly suggest you meet with a gringo who actually lives and runs a business in Penasco and hear their story. It's amazing anyone even tries to do it.
and if you want to go out for a nice dinner, you aren't gonna want to traipse through the surf to jump in a panga.
We stayed at a resort in Ko Samet about 5 years ago. To get there we took a speed boat from the main land. Upon arrival an employee brought out a portable ramp to the beach that made getting out much easier (just had to roll up pants a little bit). As for the Malecon side, not sure the logistics on that end.

On the malecon side use the marina that the pangeros use it's an easy sand exit, walk up to the main drag (short walk) and either walk into the Malecon or get a taxi for 20 pesitos per person.

Another idea... Handyman service for all the condo's in Penasco. This is a huge referral market. If you speak english, do quality work, charge a competitive price... people will tell others about your service.
Maybe a confidential service for Americans on the run from the law etc....run errands for them they no longer can safely do....cross border, put things in your name, move cash...

Do you know where I can find them to offer the service?
I am looking for a way to move down permanently. Any ideas for work where I can make a decent income?
what do you mean by "a decent income", living in Mexico with american wages or leaving in mexico with a decent mexican wage, which will not compare at all to the american wages, I think you are looking, in Mexico.
If you find something you like to do that other can't live without then you are gold, in other words find a service oriented niche and you got it made, food is huge in Mexico or latin countries but you have to be better than them and in my opinion white man food is very far, far away from being somewhat tasty unless you are from main land europe!!!!! unfortunately the British got here first and left a legacy of flavorless food other than bacon!!!!

here we go, handyman is the perfect example of what I am referring to, you can charge USA prices and get no work at all or get so busy and make money as long as you charge mexican prices (in Mexico DUHHH!!!!) however still do a GOOD job.
Maybe another avenue for me to check into, plumbing, electrical, tile (wall to wall and murals www.artistictileandmurals.com ) painting, wood and metal framing, roofing (sorry NO tile roofing), car mechanics (from checking your oil to rebuild your engine), metal fab and last but not least drink beer and eat good food!!!!
Looking into moving to RP in the next 6 month so if you are in need of anything or everything contact me and let see what we can do

But Jerry you should know that frozen is how the fresh catch of the day comes into port, however if you have all the ins and outs it could work into something lucrative and keep you by the beach more often, send me some more info to my email or thru FB, serious things can not be discuss in this forum, to many thread hijackers in here!!!!! LOL
Can you crack a whip? Hand out some lashes on here. The only biz that really makes money is a pawn shop, only problem you will have is lookly lou's looking for there stuff.
How about setting up a farmers market? When we were in Hawaii a few years ago, they had a farmers market at the resort. You could set up the market at different resorts on different days of the week. Or maybe you could integrate it in with the Mermaid Market. TravelLover had asked about a farmers market in a different thread. I bet there would be lots of people interested in one. When we travel, we always look for them.
Buy a full sized passenger van and give Russ some competition. You could also advertise shuttle service from Phoenix/Tucson or just around town, hauling peoples stuff, vehicles, RV's across the border. Russ is making it work as well as Geoff from Border Movers. Gotta be room for one more.

Yeah a farmers market....like the Mermaids? seriously people//////
Very impressive Russ! We look forward to joining you guys on a trip as soon as the work commitment ends. Never been a doubt that it would be awesome. Still think Gary could do something similar. Clearly & logically there is a demand & as time goes on that will increase, & if you are a good guy good things will happen.
IMO to become a tour guide it would take years and years to gain the knowledge that Russ and Naomi have on Rocky Point and Mexico. Then you have to build a client base.

I don't know what you meant by this comment, but thought I better explain myself better. Lots of farmers markets also have booths set up for artisans to show and sell their stuff as well. I've never been to the Mermaid Market, but thought that it was artisans selling different things. A farmers market along with it could draw more people in.
Maybe get a van like The Shaggy and take groups bar hopping...
I tried that while I was doing the shuttle, unfortunately the first time I did it was with friends and of course the drinks starting coming my way we ended up staying in the 3rd bar, way to much fun to stay away from and do not drink, specially if you are talking and site seeing with the clients, I love an ice cold Tecate as much or more than any drinking bar hoping passengers, so it did not work for me but I gladly be a customer!!!!
I like an assisted living facility. Or a Mexican version of visiting angels for all the ex-pats in need of some help.
I know an ex-pat who moved to Ajijic (near Guadalajara) and opened an assisted living "facility." While I don't know what specific documentation / certification might have been required, it seemed not much more complicated than buying a multi-bedroom place on the outskirts of town, hiring a caregiver, and taking on a few residents.
The idea of assisted living centers is a great one, we have been discussing it amongst ourselves for a little while. When I take people into Las Conchas and we see a few "dead" condo projects on the left side it is pretty much what we think it could be used for. It would take $$ to make it happen and would be a long term project but I think it would be great to see those buildings being used....

Russ, that is a great idea however it seems just a little to big of a place to start however a house at Las Conchas with 5 to 8 rooms will be the perfect place to start something in a smaller scale, I know that the permits and certificates and red tape needed is big here in USA, which in Mexico might be a little easier as USA has way to many rules and regulations for simple things as retrofitting light switches or door knobs, etc, a friend of mine started one here in Tucson, it is a very demanding job and for certain you need to have a bit of knowledge on the field but it is very doable but be sure that you will be needed to work almost 24/7 at the beginning, unless you have the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ back up to hire knowledgeable stuff able to care for others and for you to be able to sleep well, there is a lot of elderly abuse in places like these so be prepare to spend more money in a CCC system so emps will be discurage on abusing the old customers!!
I love the idea of "water taxi's" to/from Malecon / Sandy Beach. We've taken advantage of those in Vancouver Canada to go to /from Granville Island. I also think a shrimp/seafood delivery service to the beach. If a couple of the vendors could sell shrimp from coolers on a boat, I'd be buying, rather than taking the trip into town.
I think a upholstery shop that advertised in Phoenix, took the down payment up there then farmed the jobs out to Penasco and better yet Caborca shops would be a money maker...
Maybe you could be an Economics teacher and educate the population on the importance of competition in the market place. Maybe some other simple business practices like customer service, not ripping off your customer, moving inventory. Maybe teach them about market equilibrium, how price meets demand. Teach them how following these principles will in the long run benefit them with sustainable business and profitable income.
I think some really good mechanic should specialize in repair and service ONLY of VW buggies, ATV's, and golf carts. But you better be good.
BTW, can anyone recommend someone to work on a VW buggy?
If you need the frame rebuilt Jesus Maria in Santo Tomas is great at repairing rust damaged atv'...this is a side job but he can use the companies equipment so it has a to happen on his days off....I can arrange a meeting around thanksgiving
New idea...setup a workshop to make higher end tourist stuff..superior panga models.....useful objects with a Mexican touch......then hire your own sales team

There are a few really good mechanics, however it all depends in the relation that you have with them, for example while I run the shuttle I used Baja 1000, for me they did great work, never had to go back for repair or fix in a job they have already done and they were always on time or early to return my vehicle done and ready for the road, however I have heard a couple people complain about their work, go figure must be that I am bilingual and communication is perfect!!
When it comes to motorcycles, ATVs and I believe he also does UTVs (polaris, etc.) Thor, he is located on Calle 13 across from Sushi Sun, really good he even helped me get that very expensive part for my quad in eBay at less that half the price from the dealer, he has been there for many years.
There is a guy in PP that builds buggies and rails from the ground up, do not know if he is also a VW mechanic, I tried to find his info but had no luck, a while back Rick busa and John Monteiro ( from FB) had a buggies built by him, if you know any of those two you can contact them to get his info, however VW are as easy as bicycles!!! just make sure that cylinder #3 gets lots of air flow!!!!!

. The sad fact that I can get a far better Quesadillas and Craft Beer at stinking Whole Foods than I can in Penasco for less money is depressing
I had a couple ideas a some years ago. While we were sitting on the patio of our condo, we thinking how cool it would be to have pizza delivery right to the beach. So the Jet Ski or ATV pizza idea came up. Sounded good after we had been drinking. :D
The other idea was a pool bar. Not swim up bar, but a floating bar that comes to you. Haven't got all the schematics drawn up yet, but sure seems doable.

Todd while sober you really think you can design the floating bar so the first big wave doesn't Fiesta Cruser it on top of the Bar flies?

Not in the ocean. HAHAHA.
I was thinking more along the idea of in the pool. When the swim-up bar is packed and the guests just don't feel like moving.
Sounded good in my head.
