Also on the way into the Malecon there are guys selling on the right hand side street by the marina. I take groups to them and they do a good job getting my folks what they want for a "fair" price (subjective)

Niceee. Went to LP Dental. They were really nice. But could not do the work. I had a abscess & they would have to open it & leave the tooth open for more days then I would have been able to stay:( But I started on Antibiotics and will go from there.

Sorry it didn't work for you at LP. Went there today (after reading recommendations on RP Talk) for an extraction and was VERY impressed. Cost was only $90. Asked about a toothguard (bitesplint) that would cost $500 back home and they charge $140. They have better equipment then my dentist in Michigan. I'm sold!

I know where to buy shrimp but where do you go to buy fish? I have bought talapai at Walmart once or twice but last time they had nothing. What other kinds of fish can you buy and where?

Sea products. Flash frozen -10 degrees. Lenguado, get the small fillets. The medium ones are huge.

Aka flounder ,if you didn't know

So Sea Products is the place to go for what would be considered fresh since it's been frozen since day of catch?

Shrimp season closed in April and reopens in September... So there shouldn't be any fresh...I'm not saying there isn't, only that there shouldn't be any..

Freshhhhhh.......

We bought a few to eat for dinner last time there. Two local chicks with three big cooooleras on the street on Sinola Sunday afternoon. Fresh, cheap and safe since they were being marinated in Clorox Bleach. Always knew they did it but not so obvious.

Not bitchin....

They tasted pretty good and whitened my teeth as well!

What I meant by fresh was to say that some of it is frozen in blocks of ice not long after catch. What I have heard is anything you buy after April is most likely been frozen. So would you recommend getting some shrimp at Sea Products or is there a better place

This is from an article in the U.S. SMELL. Just good common sense here. Conspire to get a whiff of what you’re thinking of buying–either pick up a shrimp in your hand, or, if possible, bend over to sniff. As with all fish, the smell should not be “fishy.” However, in the case of shrimp, a mild aroma that’s reminiscent of cooked shrimp is just fine. Look out, obviously, for olfactory signs of spoilage and deterioration. A couple of specific olfactory no-no’s are a chlorine smell (it is legal to wash shrimp with bacteria-killing chlorine, but this leaves a bad taste), and gasoline (which can come from poor storage conditions on a harvesting trawler.

Sea Products sells them frozen. You just need a cooler, but no ice if you buy the boxes of shrimp. They are colder than the ice. I have kept them in my freezer for as long as a year and they are still fresh tasting when I defrost and cook them. No smells. Not cheap, but well worth it.

thanks...this what i was looking for

I buy the large which are pretty big. 4lb box will be about $44. You have to defrost them all at once or put a portion of them in room temperature water and break them off the block as they defrost. Then put the rest back in the freezer. It's a hassle, but there are only two of us so we can't eat 4lbs unless we are having a party. Very clean, all the same size.
Landshark
Another option is the vacuum sealed 1/2 kilo packages. Just the right size for a dinner for 2 or 3 and never any freezer burn.

How many pieces do you usually get in the 4lb box?

I went to Sea Products for the first time last week and bought a 2kg box of U12 Blue. That is 4.4lbs. There were 56 shrimp in the box. I am no expert, but my theory is that U12 means 12 per pound. True? If true 4.4 pounds should be about 53 shrimp...so 56 is about right.

I'm just tryin to find the best product at a fair price. I have never been there. Sounds like the place to go. Do you know hrs of operation?
There will be 7 of us over a 4 day period. Should be able to devour 50+ shrimp. I can't wait :)
Hillbeartoe
I love the place. No hassle, no bullshit. Tell them what you want, they get it and ring it up.
They accept and have change in both currencies and will take cards.
If you get stuff to take home, have a cooler with NO ice. The frozen stuff is at -10 degrees and ice is warmer than their products. After 5 hours in transit we get back to town and they are still frosted.
tequilatodd
If I buy the frozen....will I be able to eat same day?
We are getting there this Saturday. Wanted to get them as soon as we can.

Sure, just bag chunks or float them in cold water. Never use warm.
Thats if you have water... lol.
tequilatodd
Ya...we'll be at a condo.
I usually buy from 3 brothers at the market. I do know that the season ended in April and I have bought from them exclusively off season for the last 8-10 years. Never had bad product.
Just thought I'd give sea products a try. Whatever they are selling has to have been from a catch in April or maybe March....right?

Maybe, maybe not. Unless you buy from a panga guy you'll never know for sure. At Sea Products you don't have to be concerned about when they were caught because they know how to package them and how to freeze them to maintain the freshness.

They flash freeze them

Thats what I was getting at. Even a catch in Feb would still be good. Thanks
Wood Spinner
Not only the smell. Take a small bite and you can tell for sure that they are good.
Sounds bad but they do have a nice flavor.
marybna
I always buy my flounder and shrimp at Pacifico and I used to buy tilapia at Walmart. The last 2 time Walmart didn't have any. Is there a season for it? I can't buy it here because it is all farm raised in Indochina and they won't eat it.
Roberto
Super Ley seems to always have a good selection of fish. The recent remodel has really improved the look and the total in store selection has improved also. Vegies and fruits are good there althought its nicer to go to Fruiteria Sinaloa
marybna
We need to go down after the first of year and pick up our resident cards. I will go to LEYS. My family loves the shrimp we buy at Sea or whatever it called. The flounder is wonderful. Last time we spent almost $300 but it is sooo much better than what I get locally,

I bought some shrimp from 3Bouys on the Malecon ("downtown" area)today...the left-most stall when facing the water from the street. The scale said 5lbs (2.27 kg). $640MXP, or about $40USD. these were the biggest size shrimp they had, and there were 51 shrimp in the 5lbs...so if the scale was accurate then they were U10s. Anyway, they were AWESOME! By comparison, we stopped at Sea Products and they were selling the 2Kg box of U12s for $45USD. Anybody know of better deals?

Did you check the scales with a bottle of water or specifically ask for "the real scale" at 3Boys? If not, then you probably did not get 5lbs. And at $8/lb, its doubtful you didi either. When I buy there, I always check the scale with a bottle of water at which point the other scale comes out and the price goes up $1/lb.

They know I'm willing to pay a real price for real weight and I won't give them up when they are selling to others .... but for shrimp, Sea Products is still the way to go.

Well, I assumed the scale might be rigged a little. How much do you think it is off? You indicate the price for the other scale goes up by $1...so maybe 12%. Is the scale likely off by more than 12%?
Landshark
If they were U12's you got about 4 lbs. Still a good buy for $40. Personally I still prefer to buy from Sea Products because I trust their scale and I know the shrimp are good. I don't play the crooked scale game and don't trust the freshness when buying from a cooler, especially in the hot months. But that's just me...

Was looking on old threads as to not start one that's been answered already but I want to make sure this weekend we get SAFE yummy shrimp, my fiancé almost died from bad shrimp at Gammas or Gamis or whatever the heck its called next to Penasco Del Sol (yes two weeks in the hospital is really considered almost dying) , Is Sea Products the only place that freezes the shrimp right away for sure. We don't care if its fresh just safe and good. Any suggestions? If the consensus is Sea Products, which it seems to be, how do we get there?
Hillbeartoe
There is a street across from the Burger King , Benito Juarez/Benito Juarez..... yes I know but turn on that street and it on the next corner.
Heading into town it will be on your left just as you pass the BK. Heading out of town it will be on your right before you pass the BK.

Awesome, quality and safety is worth an additional cost as long as it's not outrageous which it sounds like it's not, we are excited to try. Thank you so much!

No haggling, prices are listed in peso/dollar on an electronic board.
Take a cooler, no ice. The products are frozen -10 degrees and ice actually defrosts them. We picked up fish and put them in a cooler and drove back to Mesa and the fillets were still frosty after 5.5 hours.

Well you could but the prices are posted on a LCD TV which allows them to change the price with the market so it won't do you too much good.

I shudder ever time I drive by one of those streetside shrimp Sales places. Huge white coolers sitting usually in the sun. I have never stopped but should out of curiosity. What temps are maintained in those coolers? How often do the sanitize those coolers? How much ice do they really use afterhours? How do the sales folk wash hands? How long are the shrimp sitting there?
Those and more questions put me off. I used to buy from Cisco at Mary's on the Malecon. The owner, Pancho, buys in bulk and stores them in a frozen locker till he needs them. He uses lots of shimp in the restaurant so they do not sit too long. They used to sell in front of the restaurant but do not any longer.
Jungle Jim
Hey Roberto.............

No worries about streetside camarones! Ice? We don't need no stinking ice! They are perfectly safe to eat! We keep em soaked in Clorox Bleach! That's why our grande Blues are so white! Even if they were rotto when WE got them they are perfectly safe and sterilized now!

I bought a dozen a few years ago from the two chicks that operate from the three cool-eros grandes blanco under the streetside lean-to on Sinaloa just past the fruiteria Sinaloa, after getting into town too late and too wiped out to deal with the malecon. Got em to the condo and it was then we could smell the bleach. I washed and soaked them for an hour and couldn't get the smell out of them. Finally took em out to the basura barrel cause they were stinking up me casa.

If you ever do feel adventurous enough to risk you life for a ((FRESH)) shrimp dinner off of the roadside vendors in RP do a sniff test of the coolero first. If you get the slightest whiff of chlorine...they're BAD. If you get the even slighter whiff of ammonia...they're potentially DEADLY and expect an all nighter alternating sitting on and hugging the comode then get revived with electrolite iv's at the clinic the next morning. Ah, la sabor de Meh-Ico!!

Last year while making a major ($350.00) shrimp purchase at the big frozen fish store on Sinaloa I was feeling frisky after seeing two really big Spiny Lobster tails in their freezer. I paid way too much for them but the guy assured me that they were fresh from Bahia San Carlos. That should have my first alert, how can they be fresh if they are frozen solid in a zip lock bag? Well, we took em home, put em in a pot of water to thaw out and after an hour realized that they were like a hundred degrees below zero!

After they were finally thawed I split em down the belly to then discover that they had not been properly gutted and their digestive systems were still filled with stinking decaying black poop and infecting the meat with a yellowish taint of foul smelling bile. Of course the odor of ammonia was now engulfing the kitchen. I knew that I had been totally SCREWED and from the looks of them they had probably spent quite some time dead and slow cooked in the sun on an open panga way down there in Guymas. So, they too became residents of the basura barrel out on the street.

Next morning we went back to the fish store to let him know about the ripoff. He said just bring em back and he would replace em. We went back home to the barrel only to find that the aroma of those delicious rotting lobsters was more than the hood dogs could take and they had knocked the can over and devoured them. In fact it looked like they had eaten what they could then rolled in the leftovers to impart an aromatic canine camouflage on themselves as dog do.

So Roberto this is my take on the Camarones del Calle.

Fewer than 30 vaquita porpoise are left in Mexico's northern Gulf of California, and experts have said that if the government of Mexico does not enact a permanent ban on the use of all gillnets, the vaquita will be extinct in less than three years. For decades, this tiny cetacean has been killed by entanglement in gillnet fishing gear used to catch shrimp for the US market. More recently, gillnets have also been used illegally to catch totoaba, an endangered fish whose swim bladder is in high demand in Asia.

In 2015, Mexico established a two-year ban on gillnet use within the vaquita's range, but enforcement efforts have failed to stem the precipitous decline in the vaquita population. Illegal fishing vessels, including shrimp boats, continue to ply the waters of the Vaquita Refuge, a no fishing zone. A loophole in the ban permitted some fishers to continue to use gillnets legally, a situation that has served as a cover for additional illegal fishing.

On June 30, 2017, the government of Mexico announced that it was implementing a permanent ban on gillnet fishing in the Upper Gulf of California. There are some positive aspects to the new ban, such as limits on landing sites and the mandatory use of vessel monitoring systems. Unfortunately, the agreed plan expands the gillnet exemption to include an additional fishery and fails to ban the possession, sale and manufacture of gillnets in the region.

The government of Mexico has failed yet againto make a commitment to a complete and permanent ban on all gillnet fisheries in the Upper Gulf of California. Time is running out for the vaquita, and decisive action is needed. Please join the Boycott Mexican Shrimp campaign, and help send the strongest possible message to the Mexican government that it must act now.

Yo Jerry...........

I'd like to help but I have an addiction............to delicious FRESH WILD CAUGHT SHRIMP! The farm raised crap fed excuse for ((SHRIMP)) that is sold at any supermarket in the FUSA isn't fit for human consumption. If they aren't properly and thoroughly cooked you run the risk of getting a deadly serious exotic strain of Vietnamese E-coli, since they supplement their pellet farm feed with human and animal excrement and that's gotta be tasty!

Last Monday we saw at least forty pangas out of El Golfo de Santa Clara probably there still scooping up the last of the tan jelly fish.

The only message the Mexican government will take note to is when our President orders an immediate halt to all money transfers to Mexico by Mexico's parasite citizens living here in FUSA!

Sea Products on Sinaloa is the best for shrimp - we always stop on the way in, and sometimes on the way out of town too.
Found the U12's are just as tasty as the U10's - and a couple dollars cheaper too. Still a VERY large shrimp!
And they do last for months and months in the deep freeze - no freezer burn at all, as they are frozen in ice.
excellent!
