Child with hearing loss needs diagnosis...

A local friend's 2 year old granddaughter is deaf, and they need to have her checked out to diagnose the cause. They are very poor.

Does anyone know of any local charity or visiting specialist that might be able to help them out to get some tests done?

I don't know of any charities or visiting specialist's but I do know Dr. Jesus Zumano (he is the president of Ej. Lopez Aceves). He is an ear doctor in RP. The name of his practice is Centro de Sordera y Mareos. His address is Ave. Constitucion #297 phone # (638) 383-5334. If you can get me some more info I will call him and send you a pm.

Rocky Point Joe, This is my profession that I am trying to retire from. If the little girl is totally deaf or subtotally deaf, she may need hearing aids, or a cochlear implant or the use of sign language to start inmediately. She may have a partial hearing loss, and then need hearing aids and the family needs help in how to deal educationally with the little girl. The child will have a chance at learning language if she is treated correctly and quickly medically and educationally. Does the school for special needs have a certified, specialized teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. If they do, which I really doubt, but is possible, that person can really be of great help. I haven't gotten down that way again yet, because of our cooperative work here on the border in NM, and family issues, but I would be so glad to consult by email to anyone who is involved with the family. The other help that could assist the child are Spanish speaking professionals that are already in Tuscon. Some or one of them might be very glad to consult with the family. Oh, I forgot to mention that our adult daughter is deaf. She is married and has four children. We entirely communicate in sign language. So good of you to advocate for this family.

Oh, I forgot to mention that if the little girl is deaf, subtotally or totally, if there are educated deaf people in the RP community, they can be of inmense help.

Janet......the mother doesn't know the cause of the hearing loss....that is why the little girl needs to be tested/diagnosed....but from speaking to the mother, it sounds like the little girl is totally deaf. I didn't try any loud noises when I saw her on Sunday....I actually didn't know my friend had another older daughter (who I hadn't met before), with a grandaughter......

We're still waiting for the doctor to return to town...lagrimas85 and his wife are keeping me updated.....and he, or I, will keep the Forum updated as we learn more.

It's gratifying to see the concern on the Forum....

We talked to Lorena the girls grandmother yesterday and she said the girl is totally deaf but they have never taken her to see a doctor. So who knows. Joe, Fabiola it turns out knows Lorena.

La Montana School for Special Needs Children would be where to look for help, especially with sign language

If any of you used to go to the old Margaritavilla (when Marty had it, and Jesika was there), Lorena worked there. She also worked over at the Coyote Ugly for Marty's son and daughter-in-law.

Will watch for more information. If there are resources needed, I would like to know and try to find them, but again, I think in Tuscon, there may be incredible resources also.

The School for the Deaf for the whole state is in Tuscon.
