The Coast Guard announced 7-Jan. that it plans to permanently shut down the Loran-C navigation system that has been used by mariners and aircraft pilots for the past 53 years. The Coast Guard said that broadcasting of Loran-C signals is scheduled to cease at noon pacific standard ( 2000 GMT ) 8-Feb. with some exceptions.
Mariners and other users of Loran-C are encouraged to shift to GPS which officials said makes Loran obsolete.
Department of Homeland Security said it anticipates that all Loran stations will cease transmitting by 1-Oct.
