Did you hear about the road collapse north of Ensenada?

A little off topic, but of interest anyway considering how Mexico builds roads. The toll road should never have been built there, too geologically unstable --- and everyone knew it. Fortunately we don't have to worry about that kind of terrain in our immediate vicinity, but still...

It happened on Dec. 28th, and it's been sliding more since then. The road south is closed at the La Mision/La Fonda exit. About 300 yards of road went down. I guess the libre road is packed, and the Tecate crossing is getting real busy. I don't think they'll be able to restore that road; maybe a bridge? Or make the detour to the free road permanent?

Apparently around Dec. 19 there was a 4-point-something earthquake, followed by several smaller ones over several days, and cracks in the highway were seen fairly quickly. They got bigger but the highway was not shut down until the whole side of the cliff collapsed. If you look closely you'll see that the driver of a big rig was on the road as it went down; must have had the ride of his life. No indication that he or anyone else was hurt, thankfully.
