Fish Story for March 16 and 17

My friends Bill from MN and Dave from PA came down to Penasco to fish with me last week. The seas were rough on Saturday and Sunday, but really nice on Monday. We ended up catching 14 California White Sea Bass, 16 Leopard Grouper, and 1 Yellowtail over two days of fishing in separate locations. All of the fish were really good size and caught on live or dead mackerel and 16 oz diamond jigs with 50 lb test line. The White Sea Bass were all between 40" and 50" in length, and the Leopard Grouper were all 28" to 34". Big White Sea Bass like those are really hard fighters and super fun to catch.
We also had a few really big fish hooked up and lost using 2 pound live Corvina for bait. I seriously think they were 100+ pound Gulf Grouper, but we will never know. I can't wait to try again to see if we can get one of those BIG BOYS in the boat next time.
My new boat is a dream. It is a 28' Cobia center console with twin 225 hp Yamaha 4 stroke outboards. One day last month with 4 guys in the boat, we had her up to 52 mph for several miles, and it wasn't even at full throttle. Lots of fishing space and a great electronics package. It's like I died and went to heaven ...:p
