NOGALES, AZ -- The Sheriff of Santa Cruz County said the murder of the deputy police chief of Nogales, Mexico, and his body guard Thursday night is very disturbing.
Sheriff Tony Estrada told The Associated Press Friday it's also troubling that drug cartels are targeting Mexican police command staff.
Estrada called the killings unfortunate and worrisome because the killings are so close to Nogales, Arizona, the county seat of Santa Cruz County.
State police officials in Mexico said a small group of men opened fire on them with AK-47s from a passing truck.
The attack occurred near a shopping mall parking lot a few miles south of Nogales, Arizona.
