The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for the Nogales crossing at the Arizona-Mexico border.

The alert said the border city is the scene of an escalating drug war, marked by daylight gunbattles in public places like shopping centers.

U.S. citizens have been targeted, according to the alert.

It advises U.S. citizens visiting Nogales, Sonora, not to wear expensive-looking jewelry or flash cash around. They should carry a cell phone with international service and, if they encounter trouble, contact a U.S. consulate.

In many cases, criminals are wearing Mexican military or police uniforms, the alert said.

U.S. visitors in Mexico are advised to restrict travel to major roads during daylight hours and do not travel alone; stay in well-known tourist areas with adequate security; visit only legitimate businesses and tourist areas; leave an itinerary with a friend or family member; and avoid demonstrations or other large gatherings.

According to the State Department, the increased violence is part of a war between drug cartels for control of major trafficking routes along the border as the Mexican government cracks down on the drug trade.
