Charter flights from Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua will once again make their way to Puerto Peñasco this summer, bringing with them a number of visitors to the area. Javier Muñoz, Director of the local Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV), recently confirmed that for a third consecutive year the State Tourism Office, along with the OCV, have arranged with Viva Aerobus to operate the flights. There will be 10 scheduled round-trip flights between July 10 – August 11. Each plane, Muñoz furthered, is expected to bring in about 145 people and he anticipates each flight will be full. The charters will fly into the Mar de Cortes International Airport (near Mayan Palace) and then passengers will be transported into town, settling into accommodations at seven area hotels (or rental providers): SeaSide, RPR, Peñasco del Sol, Playa Bonita, Laos Mar, Las Palomas, or the Hotel Paraíso del Desierto. The successful charter flight program has been a welcome addition to tourism in Puerto Peñasco over the past three years. While this summer charters to Puerto Peñasco are only expected to fly in from Cd. Juarez, in the past these flights have included routes from Queretaro (in central Mexico) and Tijuana. These flights, along with an uptick in the number of tourists visiting Puerto Peñasco in the summer by car, have contributed to making the school vacation period yet another “high season” for Puerto Peñasco hotels.

Does anyone know about the safety of the Juarez airport? Since so much of the drug violence in Mexico is concentrated in Juarez, I was just wondering if they are keeping the airport safe.

Also, did anything come from the discussions to have flights from Las Vegas?

Lovin it in RP!
People fly in and out of Juarez everyday. I think it would be safe to say the the gangs doing the bad stuff are not at the airport. Juarez is a huge mass of people spread out over a large area referred to as Juarez.

I heard from someone who ate at the Mayan last night (Sunday) that the restaurant was packed, along with the pool, and it was mostly Mexicans. I'm glad the Mexican economy is growing: "Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg forecast Mexico’s gross domestic product will expand 3.7 percent in 2012, outpacing growth in Brazil for a second straight year."

That's almost double the rate of the U.S. GDP of 1.9%

I know these posts are several months old, but I thought I'd ask (and maybe someone knows) - are there still not any regular (non-charter) flights from other cities in Mexico into Puerto Penasco? I checked out the airport's website, and under "airlines & flights" they have two - Aeromexico Connect and Global Air. But when I attempt to search those airlines' websites further, to determine if there are regularly-scheduled flights into RP, I don't have any luck in confirming it.

Yes, supposedly starting February 7, 2013, twice a week, for at least six months. The carrier will be Aeromexico, which currently has a Vegas -> Phoenix -> Hermosillo flight, from what I can tell in attempting to make a reservation. It sure will be HUGE news for Rocky Point and absolutely GREAT if flights from Vegas actually DO start occurring in February!
