RV Insurance

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good RV insurance company that will also provide comprehensive coverage in Mexico? (Liability goes with the tow vehicle.)

We have a fifth wheel that we have insured through National General for years. The things I like about them are that it is actually an RV policy rather than a car policy (covers awnings, vacation interruption, etc.) and I can add a rider for coverage in Mexico. I want to compare prices to see if this is still a good choice. We recently changed our auto policy to Geico and they had a good quote for the RV. However, they also said the policy was not valid in Mexico.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Kea.....

Check out the Vagabundos Del Mar RV, Boat & Trailer Club at www.vagabundos.com.

They are out of California. I have my trucks, Jeeps, boat and trailer insured with them and been using them for thirty years now.

They also get you the import permit for you boat, Mexican fishing permits and tourist visas.

Thanks Jungle Jim. I can't see much of their website without creating an account. Do they issue policies that will cover the RV in US & Mex (looks like Mex only, but not sure)?

But, depending on price, I guess that I could get 2 separate policies.

Hello Kea.....

Just call them at 800-474-2252.

Mexican insurance policies are only for Mexico, USA policies are only for the USA with some offering some coverage for short trips close to the border.

Of course there are many options like buying your insurance in the USA for the three or four days you plan on being in Mexico. Add that up times say ten or twelve trips in a year and it becomes a burdensome expensive nightmare. Buying it by the year thru the VAG's will save you a bundle especially if you plan on frequent trips like we do. Everything they give you is in Spanish and English so that every Mexican municipal cop, Federal police, Judge or military type can understand in an instant that your butt is fully covered and you won't be spending the night in caged in the zoo and have all of your toys permanently impounded.

So far, knock-on-wood, y gracias al Dios, I've never had an incident in Mexico in the fifty-plus years that I've been driving and boating down there.

That is not the whole truth, years ago, like in the 80's, I was heading back home from a beach launch fishing and camp-out south of El Golfo de Santa Clara with a boat in tow when a car passed me at high speed cut back in to my lane way too soon and clipped my front bumper with their rear bumper. They went out of control, veered left into the desert and rolled over five times. I stopped, ran over expecting to see a lot of blood and guts only to see six totally borachoed dudes and a chunky half naked chiquita, all lying scattered around the car that ended up back on it's wheels. They were laughing it up and said "lo siento senior" and waved me off. Whew!! I didn't even have Mexican auto insurance that time BUT it was an awakening, never again!

If you had Progressive RV insurance you would be covered for damage and only have to buy a drivers license policy which would save you a bundle and they also cover towing back to the USA.

Mexico physical damage
This pays for physical damage to your motorhome or trailer that occurs in Mexico. Most RV insurance policies do not automatically cover damages that happen in Mexico.†
