Cholla Bay 4 Life
Man, life has been tough since I took Queen and Steve Maduro, Nicholas' brothers advice and got a 4th job to pull myself up by the boot straps. Haven't had much time to lurk around these forums. 2 weeks to the election, nowhere in sight are Steve M and Queen. No worries, I can see my hard work with this 4th job paying off here soon in about 10 to 15 years. War of attrition really. We did however find some time to get down to our second home, our home away from home, Cholla Bay. We stayed 3 nights 4 days at Bella Sirena on the FREE 99. I guess that 4th job really is paying off. Bella is so nice. Hadn't stayed there in years but it was everything I've remembered it to be. The swim up bar can go out of business for all I'm concerned and the bartender is a complete D BAG. Up there with UNCLE T. Worst happy hour in town and the food is mediocre at best. During happy hour a well liquor frozen pina collada $8... No worries there. LOL Such a joke. What is wrong with the world? Now I'm starting to sound like Joan C. I digress. We don't go to RP for the swim up bar. We go for the ocean. We got the Cholla Bay Sleigh Ride tight and right and yanked it down south behind EL HONCHO the white TACO. Sunday the day we arrived we had to be to the dock at 330pm to meet our good friend Oscar Preciado el capitan for Del Mar Charters. It was Claudia's first sunset sail on the catamaran. Oscar did not disappoint. We had a great time. Anyone that does NOT know Oscar needs to get out on the catamaran one or two times and change that real quick. Oscar is the man and that sail boat is way more personable than any other sunset/booze cruise in town. For those that know Oscar, we KNOW! We stopped for a swim over on the east side of the jetty. Got back in and Cheko fed me something special out of the cooler. Must have hit me later when we were driving home because that's when I had the NEED. THE NEED FOR SPEED and bounced the walker out of the truck somewhere in the DEZ. Next two mornings the WATER WAS LIKE GLASS until about 11am Monday and 130-2pm on Tuesday. I fished for about 10 minutes the whole trip. Trying to get back into snorkeling and I'm really leaning towards trying to shoot something. I have the spearfish itch. After this weekend I believe it's possible. Only time will tell. We really did more snorkeling than anything. Cruised the YET SKY over to the jetty on Tuesday and saw Jose BOO, Jim the dive instructor, Oscar and Cheko in the Del Mar Charter catamaran anchored in 35ft of water off of the east side of the jetty. We stopped and tied up with them for an hour and talked. They were doing some dive training with some customers I believe. Cheko came out of the water first and reported seeing some big Gulf Grouper in the 40lb range by his hand gestures in the jetty rocks on the bottom. Kind of have the itch to dive too but we'll start small with snorkeling/ free diving. Definitely buying a speargun. All in all, saw some triggers, couple of nice Cabrilla (leopard grouper), a couple of puffers, a ton of sergeant majors, a lot of these unidentified black or very dark reef fish that get fairly big. They were all on the bottom. Would really like to know what they are. All in all Claudia is addicted to the snorkeling so it was a good trip. We're trying to get down one last time before the water gets too cold so hopefully again at the end of the month. I bought a wetsuit so I think I might be good until end of November if I can brave it. I saw some FISH TACOS I think I could have shot @ PINTO POINT!!!!!!! SHOUT OUT BROKEN WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One last note: Left Wednesday morning. We left the windmill gas station exactly at 11am. Border was uneventful. Got the standard and moved through quick like, no wait, no x-ray. The x-ray lines are quite the sight to see though. Jesus. I thought getting Chapo was supposed to have stopped the drug trade???? We made it home to central Phoenix, 51 and Glendale by 335pm and that was with some slight stop and go on the 10 at 16th st for some donkeys that rear ended each other. Aside from the annoying mask mandate that is obviously not being enforced or strictly random enforcement when they need money it appeared to be a normal trip. Did not get my truck or YET SKY stolen at gun point which let's face it, that's a plus right there. When and where you need to where your mask is anyone's guess at this point but it was a good trip and we'll be back barring some Covid spike that shuts the world down again. Hopefully we can make it back before Halloween. One love!

Joe,
I went into the water today expecting it to be cooler than it was on Friday, it's still plenty warm. 85ish degrees.
With the high temps staying 86+ it will be another 3 weeks before I see much of a cool down in the water temps.
Great pic's under water and of Pinto Point, some with my place showing up.
If you come down end of the month stop by we'll be here until after the Nov. 3 disappointment for many.

45 degree lows in Phoenix next week 2 nights in a row... I think it's going to start dipping a little. Generally the rule of thumb for pools and lake is water stays near overnight low temps. The SOC is different because of ocean currents but I bet it starts to come down next week. My suit is 3mm so I think I'm good till about 64 degrees. I really want to shoot something!!!! These spearguns are damn expensive though.... Oscar with Del Mar said that he hadn't seen dolphins for a while because the water was too warm. I'm hoping if we come back at the end of the month there will be more sea life like my epic trip last October when I was riding the CBSR with a pod of a thousand.... You had also mentioned snorkeling on the west/north side of Pinto Point. We anchored over there because there was a slight wind out of the southwest that was bringing some baby waves across the point. The first day on Monday we anchored in 20ft of water out in front of the 4 ACES area. There's an area there where the water just kind of flattens out with little disturbance even though Monday the wind was heavier out of the southwest it was still relatively calm right there. The problem was the water clarity was 20+ ft so when you saw something you wanted to dive down to, the bottom is further than it appears! LOL It was a STRUGGLE. I got down twice to 20 ft but because I can really only use my arms mainly and the wetsuit was making me buoyant it was tough to stay down. I didn't get it on camera but right before we left the dive spot on Monday I was rappelling or straight pulling myself down the anchor line to 20ft with such ease that one of the times I had to have been down there for 45 seconds... It was amazing. I saw some pretty decent sized Cabria down there near the anchor. I think that's the way I may do it if I want to dive deeper water is clip the gun to my belt and then pull myself down the anchor line. Uses less oxygen. It was actually pretty fricken cool. Kicking myself for not getting it on camera. The pics I uploaded were in the 12ft range when we're on the bottom. Definitely need to experiment with a weight belt.

Joe,
I'll go check the water temp next week after Phx has it's big cool down. Cholla temps at night are supposed to get 58-60 Sun-Tues.
It's already dropped into the mid 60's twice since Friday last week and the water is still 85+.
I'll let you know, because I can be the Cholla weather guy since I'm here.
We had some serious fog here this morning.

That's crazy! Yea Fox 10 updated their temps for Sunday Monday Tuesday. I think it's 49 48 49 now... Still unheard of before Halloween. Hopefully the water stays at least in the 70's for another few weeks if not another month. What do you think the normal water temp is for November?

Really until around Thanksgiving the water will stay swim-able, it's only after 2-3 storms from the NW swing south will the water here finally cool off. It was 80 degrees at 6am today
so not a lot of night time cooling happening yet. I will take my thermometer into the ocean
and get you a reading Sunday and then next week before Halloween. I bet it's still close to
80 since it's still close to 85.
Here's a web site to find out the sea temp.

We were down their the first weekend in November last year. We went in the water but I could not stay in for long. My kid tolerated it much longer than I could. Too cold for me. Grew up in Cle and would jet ski in Lake Erie sometimes up until end of Nov when the water was in 50's...sometimes in Dec if lake didn't start freezing over (dry suits of course). Being out here turned me into a sissy; I prefer 85-90 degree water now! I'm gonna try to go down end of Oct or beginning of Nov again to see the difference from last year. I'm guessing it will be warmer this year since its still pretty hot out. But you got a wetsuit, so you'd be fine either way.

The water clarity was good Joe, and there is an obvious reason why there wasn't a bunch of plastic bags and such getting in your face. Look at the Hawaiian slings they have these days. I used one at Crescent Bay free diving in the '60s and early seventies, and they work great hunting around boulders and rocks. They're fairly cheap, but you could easily make one with your skills and there are lots of tutorials to look at for ideas.
