Covid Vaccination

My Southern California Pfizer study clinic started unblinding my cohort late last week. On Monday I was told I was in the placebo group and was offered a transition to the vaccine group. I scheduled and crossed the border into the US. Yesterday in San Diego I got my first dose of the vaccine from a research stock that can only be used for investigative purposes. This morning I have minor arm pain near the injection site. No other effects.

My understanding is that I will have negligible protection for about 10 days, but by day 15 I might see 90% efficacy. My second dose is scheduled for about 18 days from now. I will have a nominal 95% protection a week after the second shot and nearly 100% against cases requiring hospitalization. At least until the virus evolves for another year in the anti vaxxer community.

I asked what fraction of the study cohorts eligible for unblinding had done so. The answer was nearly 100% in the placebo group but only half of the vaccine. Clearly, about half of the vaccine group had sufficient arm pain that they didn’t need to ask.

Covid is a horror story right now in Southern California. The LA Times this morning has a story of “vaccine chasers” running all over the county chasing rumors of vaccine supplies.

In Puerto Peñasco a token (and secret) number of doses arrived a week ago for front line healthcare workers only. Mexico continues to get hammered, and is putting on a show of getting a few people vaccinated.

For people who are afraid that Covid vaccines were rushed and possibly not safe, the Sputnik V vaccine is their best line of evidence. Russia approved it without conducting a clinical trial. Unbelievable. I probably should look into it, but I’m too tired from looking into something more constructive.

We now know that social distancing and masks don't work , the numbers prove that . My doctor told us herd immunity is the way to go. My suggestion is before getting the vaccine is to get the test to see if you are already immune .

How does herd immunity work with variants?

The numbers tell us shunting down the economy didn't work. Just think of all the businesses that where lost and will never return . Hopefully, history will tell us what not to do because there will be a flu season next year and the after.

Masks don't work, that's a silly idea. I was at my Dr's office 3 weeks ago and asked him about the effectiveness of using masks, he said
please do myself and everyone else a favor and wear one when around other people. I asked him how bad the influenza flu season was
he said the numbers are very low vs previous years, I asked why and he pointed to the mask he was wearing (and other factors).
I am sure the herd immunity will eventually take over from the vaccine rollout and people surviving getting Covid,
but with all the new variants of Covid appearing and how operation Non warp speed was handled, it's not going to happen for awhile.
Here is a link to the flu numbers

We have been following the cdc guidelines for 11 months now and look at the numbers . Ya , social distancing and mask work . What's going to happen next flue season. The way I look at it we are doomed for the rest of our lives to be under these guidelines, what great way to live.

Sure wearing a mask and distancing during flu seasons would be a pain, but would it be worth doing to save 1000's of lives,
reduce missed work days and lessen the strain the health system? Time will tell.

I received my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday. I had more arm pain than the first injection, beginning about two hours later. About 24 hours after the shot I have no more pain. I’m a participant in the clinical trial. I had the placebo in late summer and then crossed over to the vaccine group as soon as my age group was unmasked. My wife was unmasked earlier this week. She got the vaccine. So we’re good to go.

If the vaccine availability continues to improve we should see a big boom in visitors and real estate transactions by the end of next month as many retirees and pre-retirees feel safe traveling again. College students likely won’t have vaccine access until the summer, so I hope spring break doesn’t happen.

There was a favorable independent study of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine that Mexico hopes to use. I hope that production can ramp up quickly.

Received my 2nd Pfizer dose on the 14th. No side effects whatsoever with either the 1st or 2nd dose. Now, that 2nd Shingrix (shingles) shot a couple months ago was a whole different story. Horrible.

looking forward to getting the shots - I'm still group 1C, but only 2 months until I'm 1B, so we'll see what comes first. If we can get the non-believers in science, and the anti-vaxxers to all move to Idaho, I'd be willing to never visit there again. The ignore feature is great, didn't know JJ was back.

Yes. I find this forum much nicer after ignoring 5 or 6 posters, most of whom have never posted anything useful about Rocky Point.

Masks and distancing don't work? Can you send me a source for this research? Until 2 weeks ago when I officially retired I worked and virtually met with Virologists and Microbiologists nearly every day. I am certain they would love to see this research since it conflicts with all of the legitimate studies that have been done to this point. Perhaps something new has been learned that to overall research community is not aware of.

Got my first shot last week. It was the Moderna vaccine. My arm was a little sore for a couple days. Apparently the 2nd shot of the Moderna has seen more side effects (feeling a little lousy for a day) than the 2nd shot of the Pfiser.
