Google maps now for some reason shows Mexican FMM office at the border in the wrong spot. They send you 5 blocks south to a empty lot with two guys sells dope it appeared.

In reality the office (as ever) is still on the right as you cross.Pull forward and park in the many spots in the middle of the road and walk back. Have your exact address in Mexico ready for the officer.Dont bother filling it out online.

Once you get to the Puerto Penasco part do yourself a favor and hire an agency to help. One little mistake can cancel hours of standing in line in the nice plaza in front of the offices and set you back a day.
I used Proservices who has an office next door and they were great. Really good dealing with old stressed out geezers like me. They also have the luxury of dashing back to the office to fix any typing errors.
The goverment office is very exacting. The appointment took 80 minutes.
I spent afout 5 hours waiting in the plaza to get a spot and got in at 11 am Every one of the the other companies on site helping people were really nice people too.
Some used professional line sitters that may be representing multiple people. They would all be good choices to guide you through this daunting to a newbie process.

Mexican Consulate is the first step:
These numbers change as the peso changes and they really really need to see 12 months of a statement:
Temporary Residency
  • Monthly income of at least c.US$3,275 over the last 6 months (some consulates request 12 months); OR
  • Savings/investments account balance(s) of at least c.US$54,600 over the last 12 months; OR
  • You can also apply for Temporary Residency based on the value of a house you own in Mexico, or if you make a capital investment in Mexico. See the section below for more details.
Permanent Residency
  • Monthly income of at least c.US$5,460 over the last 6 months (some consulates request 12 months); OR
  • Savings/investments account balance(s) of at least c.US$218,000 over the last 12 months

We live here full time and are permanent residents. The primary reason we got permanent residency is because it’s the law.

Having a permanent residence card also makes the tax bite much less when selling your home.
Also it fast tracks you to Mexican citizenship (5 years) which means no need for a Bank Trust anymore
for foreign citizens. But also creates more work for some who will need to file a income tax return in Mexico
too.

Who needs a temporary visa?
Hi Joan , Like I said I needed it to get a digital signature to access a corporation I have that owns properties I am about to sell. The new money laundering laws now require one. Many people I ran into through the process were getting it as a gateway to getting the permanent because qualifying for that one has gotten out of reach for many retired people this year .

and of course the Covid inspired freedom not to be forced to work at the office has freed millions to vacation in Mexico and still work.

If you want to follow the letter of the law you are supposed to get an FFM. In practicality if you are talking about being in Penasco for 3 months you wouldn’t need anything.
