Sea of Cortez Grouper- population and biology research and resources

Thankfully, I’m not dead…. Older, busier (with life), and more preoccupied with getting my kids transitioned into responsible young adults than with boating fish, but coming back to revisit this thread has reminded me that the boat needs to be washed, serviced, and readied for a trip to the...

Fish Report for November 11, 2017

Pfft... we use fish that size for bait... ;) Excellent trip Shawno! The largest one we've ever boated was back in 2014, and was 93 pounds on the boat scale when he came out of the water, and was 86 pounds when we took it out of the fish box and re-weighed it at the marina later that night...

last trip of the year = 55 yellow tail

Great trip Chris! No more yellowtail fishing this year for me, either... We were on our way in after our last trip (3 weekends ago), and the pinion gear in my right engine broke, and made a serious mess of the gear box. New parts are on order, but it will be another month or so before I get...

    totoaba vs. white sea bass?

The Whitey (and another one just like it) was caught 2 weeks ago, along with about 20 yellowtail (all 10-25 pounders), and a 20 poundish gulfie, out near the Tio rocks and Caballo. Yeah, the yellowtail fishing has been good this year (and close in! My fuel bill loves it). That big push of...

    totoaba vs. white sea bass?

They are extremely easy to tell apart when they first come out of the water (much easier than some folks seem to think)... Totos are uniformly bronze in color, with some white under the chin. They have small black spots randomly along their sides, and their tail is convex (shaped like a ping...

    Boat Trailer Maintenance?

The trailer under my Mako came with oil-bath hubs. At the time, I had no experience with them, so I started reading. People either love them or hate them, but after 6 years towing back and forth to RP (at least 50 trips now, including 5 or 6 up and down the hell-road to Lobos) they are still...

    Shawno's New Boat

I already told Shawno he should just name his boat "Dead Fish"; but he's not going to listen to me....

    Shawno's New Boat

Yeah, but... how did it get to Lobos and back...? :D and who was the handsome bald guy catching yellowtail on it down there? Wait, How did it even get to Rocky Point...? :p

    Fish Identification?

You said the fish had fangs - only corvina and snappers have canine teeth.... and your fish ain't a corvina. Mullet snapper, golden snapper, and gray snapper all look very similar to each other when they are that size. My money still says your fish was a golden snapper.
