Since you're well connected down there, is there any way you could spread the word that this tunnel is going to scare away tourists as long as it's up? I totally understand locals wanting to protect themselves, so if they feel strongly about the tunnel, then I respect that. However it's possible...

I'm debating taking the family down for the 4th of July. The checkpoints seem like a pain, and not having beach access is also a big negative. I guess we'll monitor the situation and see how things unfold in the next few weeks.

This time of year everything is cheap. You shouldn't have a problem finding a 4*+ hotel for $100. I'd just filter your search on hotels.com for that within 5 miles of the airport.

With TSA precheck and somebody with you to hop in the HOV lane you'd have time for a drink or two at the airport bar. Without precheck and another person is dicey, but still doable if you drive somewhat fast and don't stop.
