Miramar....not really....I like the place but don't lie to protect it like you boosters do..
Fact 1 the Homeport is stupid and doomed to failure.
Fact 2 The Puerto Penasco police department are crooked
Fact 3 Lukeville/Sonoyta is a nightmare crossing now...with anextra 4000 the morning of a cruise....oh I'm sure it will be fine

Despite your scares, we stop in Sonoyta for tacos at El Serape for the best we have had, and there are good ones in Tucson!

Some might say your adjectives are about Las Dunas, and you too are an extreme booster of that area, but I find it beautiful also. Heck, their website is down, and it's just not what they promoted 20 years ago! We may not get huge cruise ships, but that's OK with me. I would love smaller cruisers

Where in Sonoyta is El Serape?
MIRAMAR
At the T, by VIP (old Circle K) go right, then immediate left. Best tacos! And tell Abel, the owner, hola, along with Gabbie, Raul, and Jesus. Abel has 3 kids, one is a doctor, one an engineer, and the other still in high school. He is a truly beautiful person, along with his wife, and both real sweet hearts.

Thanks Miramar....we'll try it next time down.

Their bowl of beans are great too!

Hey I eat there too but that town is flat out ruled by the Memos and is horribly failing it's people and visitors....I am not really that much of a ST backer these days ( although the web site exists.. switched under the new management) plenty of people for me as it is and I fear to many more coming....

Carnival is going to develop a terminal in Ensenada to add another stop for their ships, I don't know how this will affect the long struggling RP cruise port cluster.

So at full speed that's a 70 hour trip on the 35 year old shitbuckets we most likely would see .. with the part North of Guaymas sort of dicey depth wise....

Check out the comments below the article too: "The cruise line has already made arrangements for a temporary check in facility (the Civic Center) and will tender passengers to the ship for the first cruise "season," and is prepared to do so for as long as it takes for the facility to be finished." So the cruises will start before the port is finished.

Hoping this smaller cruise ship (540 passengers vs. 1225 ) will be available to cruise the Sea of Cortez. Grupo Vidante is developing the Mayan Palace area. https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/18169-grupo-vidanta-to-enter-cruise-industry-with-ex-voyager-more-ships.html#disqus_thread

Still too big....going on a Seabourne to St. Petersburg etc. in July that is 600...wish it was 400 like it's sister ships...
jerry
That is the same BS rendering they created 10 years ago I believe...a shore excursion to Copper Canyon? Might make everyone on board a little antsy waiting 4 days for the next port departure..

So .... you are all on in "I'll believe when I see it!" mood about the privatization of the port? Or do you think this is credible?

I believe it's credible that a lot more money will get poured into this project and magically disappear into somebody's pocket like the money before it. Call me an eternal optimist. <snicker>
mexicoruss
It will be one of two things in the end.

As I posted on a facebook page (I know some of you won't use facebook, purest or whatever) we were told many years ago that the coastal highway to El Golfo would be done (insert whatever year here) we waited and waited for it and it was like it was never gonna happen. Guess what? It is done and it is incredible. It took longer than we thought it should because you know we all know how things are supposed to work.......because we are all so smart and successful.

So this thing may indeed get finished and may have some ships departing from Peñasco and returning with tons of happy customers or it may not and it will just be an incredible fish ecosystem. Either way....so what? Nobody (that I know of) on this forum has any skin in this game. So if some scoundrel is successful in gaming someone out of dollars on this deal, just be glad it isn't you. If I was to bet, I would bet that a port will be completed and ships will sail from and to it, how it looks in reality is anyone's guess. In the mean time I guess it is great fodder for armchair warriors to talk about the Mexican system of things as if they have any knowledge of it at all.

I will just open a cold beer and not worry about something that does not involve me even though I live here.
jerry
Stewart I picture that rust buckets stuck at low tide pumping out low grade fuel smoke into Esmeralda windows...
Stuart
Nice take, Russ. No issues with that. You know I fish. I would have been the first idiot in line waving Benjamins if they had ever completed the new marina.

Feces occurs. Doesn't mean I don't love the place, because you know I do.

Cruises? Meh. I spent enough time cruising on big ships with flat tops that could wipe out entire geographical regions for months on end with 5000 other swinging dicks on board.

Doesn't mean I think it's bad for Penasco. My frustration comes more with the Viva La Mexico way of getting any of these projects up and running. Private investment MIGHT make it happen, but the track record so far? Not good.

Buy more vans and hire more locals to run everybody around. Be a capitalist. There will be a need. When? Just like I was told when I went to Cabo for the first time in the 90's and asked "When will this hiway from the airport to Cabo be finished?

The van driver looked at me, deadpan, and said "June. It will be finished in June. We just don't know what year."

True story. Wife and I will be in Mazatlan for a week at the end of the month. Our 20th anniversary. Wouldn'T wanna be anywhere else.

Viva La Mexico!
jerry
More of a environment first guy myself Russ...more people will not make the going to shit Sea of Cortez healthier ....4 that's my reason to talk shit about it...I also raise your El Golfo example with the failed southern route along the Sonoran coast and my fav. the cool/stupid idea past...The Nautical Ladder!

Major port, great airport,on airline routes, bus routes from population centers and near the places the cruisers would want to see. Remember , the Homeport is aimed at the homeboys...not you...
GringoZona
Yeah, I guess I forgot that this was supposed to be Mexico's "Homeport," not just a regular port. That is insane to think they could just become more relevant and useful than Manzanillo, even as it currently is, from scratch.
joester
I'm trying to figure out how the Port of Manzanillo has anything to do with Puerto Penasco.

Not exactly like it's close. 24 hour drive, 2038 km. Cruise ships already port at Mazatlan and that's closer.
jerry
Ok ..,you guys aren't getting the big picture. The Homeport was supposed to be the only one in Mexico.Someone lost his juice that was pushing this scam and now Zilo joins Acapulco https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/articles/18341-mexico-acapulco-calls-and-homeporting.html
You can fly round trip from Mxico City to Zilo for 260 bucks.Leaving from their gives you a way better itinerary than from our condo blighted rathole. You can come frame Europe and fly direct to both cities.
MIRAMAR
4 hour drive and I could be on a cruise, visiting the Sea of Cortez, which is what I really want to see!

Acapulco doesn't sound like such a great place: https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Clowns-in-Acapulco-Protest-Violence-Killings-20180508-0010.html

Can't imagine that many people would want to go to Acapulco: https://www.thesun.co.uk/travel/5595862/how-acapulco-once-mexicos-top-tourist-resort-was-ruined-by-crime/

"An investigation by Sky News reports that 30,000 people were murdered there last year – the highest number in 20 years - around 82 people dying per day.

Bodies are often found dumped on the beaches.

The situation is so bad that the American government has issued a warning not to visit."

Those numbers are totally wrong, almost 30,000 people were killed in all of Mexico, you need to wade through all the inaccurate Headline grabbing articles.

Per CNN article: "In Guerrero -- the state where Acapulco is located -- murders rose to 2,316 last year, about the same as 2016, but up from 1,514 in 2014.
In Sinaloa, the former turf of notorious, imprisoned drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, homicides in 2017 soared 39% over last year to 1,332."

Not denying Mexico has a big problem with Cartels, killings, being brutal and how authorities leave bodies on display for awhile,
The USA had over 17,000 murders in 2016, So we have some issues too.
Choice of going to Chicago or Mexico, Mexico will usually win in my book.

Our current truce could break at anytime......tourists will still come until they end up washed up on the beach not the guy they buy coke from....

Sorry About that, I have run into Jerry here in Tucson at a plant sale of all places but I will be down next weekend to go look at the Encantame Palace before the prices are 699k.
Maybe get together if anyone down was good friends with Roberto.
Jungle Jim
I'll be there next week Playa....

Checking up on my Vaquita skeleton at Salinas Point then head back south to see what Capitan Scotty has been killing offshore from Santo Tomas. Maybe document another thirty or forty murdered dead Ridley's washed up since the last first of July on that stretch of playa. Maybe dig out a dozen or so burrowing rock Piddocks with my rock hammer from the intertidal clay beds south of ST on our way to El Desemboque then meet up with our shrimp cartel buddies and get a few kilos Godzillas Azul for home and the barbie later in Mirador.

Gotta performance Jeep? Maybe you might want to tag along.

JJ
MIRAMAR
Jungle Jim, is there really a vaquita skeleton in Salinas? They're smart animals and it seems if they're getting trapped in San Felipe, they would move to Penasco, where they used to be sighted. I hope there are more in Bahia San Jorge
Jungle Jim
Yes Miramar....

We see three sometimes four or five Vaquitas every time we make that beach run. Have been seeing them there for many years now. The one that I mentioned we found fresh dead on a receding tide about three miles south from the fish camp at the tip of the point. It had been killed by a boat prop. It was a juvenile about three and a half feet long. I took it into the dunes, buried it and marked the spot with some ancient Indian fire pit rocks and conch shells, a photo and the GPS on my phone. I check up on it every time we venture out there. It's been there for three years now. The Coyotes dig around it but have not pulled it away from my marker. It is fairly stripped of all meat now by the Dermestid Beetles. I plan on bringing it home next year to display in my backyard skull and bones carnal pit.

I mentioned it to one of the so called "scientists" at CEDO this past spring. He said they have several reports of Vaquitas in that area but have not had time to verify it themselves. They have a nice one there all bleached out and articulated but not for public display for some reason. He wasn't particularly interested in my story though????

I think the population that lives there in the shallows between Isla San Jorge and Salinas Point have probably always been there with no connection at least in modern times with the San Felipe population and have never been part of the bycatch related to the netting of the Giant White Sea Bass.

Later,

JJ

The new Sonoran Governor is still trying to figure out where the Peso's are going to come from. Traditionally the previous
administration's spends/steals any Peso's still in the treasury before the next regime comes in.
The cruise port has many obstacles in it's way, so don't hold your breath.

The point is Rob that the people with outstanding monetary claims against the Homeport have settled so new money can be invested without running into the “ well you should have done your due diligence research “ trap. This is a good thing if true.
Be happy or sad but this thing is about to get going again.I personally hate it.
