I was talking to a older ex military guy yesterday and this story happened to come up. His views on this (NOT MINE) was this isn't a drug cartel thing but a cover up for a government command take over. I didn't go into it to deep with him, but he thinks there might be a war for power that's going to happen in Mexico. Remember fellow forum people this was the ex military guys thoughts on this and not mine. So when you start busting B*ll's and slamming, address it to ex military guy whose not on this forum.

Where did you conduct this Interview? On the malecon? Hope he stays XXXmilitary.....
Well since this has happened... Who is offering the best rates on a nice weekend getaway?
I've been wondering myself, because the prices for a night along Sandy Beach back here in Arizona don't seem to be falling at all. I don't know if the condos are filling up or not, but it sure doesn't look like the rates have changed.

It wasn't a interview, we were just shooting the s**t and this story came up. He is ex US military and his wife and her family are from around Mexico city. I just want to share this.

Must be related to the Military that shot up the condo! Just saying....LOL

Everyone is is still in a wait and see mentality. Too soon to talk about prices.
As for any impact on rental and sale prices on Sandy Beach, it's gonna probably going to take a few months to see what type of impact, if any this will have. An example: I usually head down every April for the Rocky Point Triathlon. I'm wondering if the shooting will force organizers to cancel, or if participation will drop. Many of the athletes aren't RP regulars and learning of an incident like this could give them second thoughts on attending.
<Somebody was> carjacked so that the gunmen could evacuate an injured person.
your statement is very loaded especially with the rumor of who was no longer on the scene. Have they spoken to any of the authorities? this is a pretty serious statement.
Get real! There were only 4 or 5 killed. They are only an insignificant tip of the iceberg in Penasco. The Sinaloa Cartel is in total control of Penasco. It would be far worse if we had other cartels fighting for territory with the Sinaloa Cartel. If there were no drug routes to the US, and our border was under control, there would be no drug cartel activity in Penasco. Tell that to Obama!
And W, and Clinton, and HW Bush, and Reagan, and Carter, and Ford, and Nixon. It's been a long war...
New Times?? LOL I've read a few of their articles. I would call them a shock and awe paper spewing non facts for readership.
Ive resided in Penasco for a long time and I would say I feel as safe or safer here now than I ever have. The Cartel doesnt harm tourists. It looks like the Government did not want them residing in the tourist area and I for one am glad the Government is protecting the tourist areas. There is plenty of other remote areas for the cartel to safely reside & oversee their business.
your statement is very loaded especially with the rumor of who was no longer on the scene. Have your 'clients' spoken to any of the authorities? this is a pretty serious statement.
Duh, I don't think Pinky or her clients want to end up Martyr's.
With all due respect, did you witness this? My wife and I did, as I had gone out our backdoor to see what all the helicopter noise was - it was hovering somewhere around the Cholla Bay Rd but we couldn't see it as no lights were on.
However when the gatling gun revved up, then started firing it was most definitely in the direction of the Sonoran Spa. The sound of bullets hitting metal and ricocheting all over was not something we would have made up. They were using 'tracers' and there is no doubt that they were firing towards the condos - maybe a bit further down the road - but towards the condos nonetheless. They were obviously closer to us than the Bella Sirena.
This gatling gun firing continued for a couple of hours on and off, and when dawn arrived we could see the choppers. Automatic weapon fire continued on and off for another 2 hrs with sporadic small arms fire as well.
We eventually found a notice online from the US Consulate warning us to stay inside until we got the all-clear (which never came). Then I found this forum.
You can spin this anyway you would like, but the bottom line was we were in fear of our lives, and didn't have a clue what was happening. We sat on the floor of our bathroom for awhile, every time I cam out to see what was going on, firing sent me back. My wife was hysterical and I couldn't calm her down - she was convinced they were shooting at us.
The security guards were scrambling for cover as well (don't blame them as they are unarmed) but at no point in time did anyone check on us or our well-being. We later saw an elderly lady wandering around the Spa lot looking like she had 'lost' it but we didn't want to leave the condo to help her.
You can say "great job, they got the bad guys" but unless you experienced the sheer terror of having a military grade weapon firing so close to you you will never understand. It was surely as intense as any military operation in a theater of war.
Good on the military for getting them, and that apparently no tourists or workers were physically hurt - but this should have never happened the way it did - even at a time when the complexes are sparsely populated.
We have safely left Mexico, but the emotional scars will last for awhile. And by the way, if you want to call me a 'wuss' - go ahead - I'm a retired cop - and in all my years never saw anything like this and was never scared so much. If you are military trained you should be able to cope with gunships firing near you in the theater of war - but not as a tourist hoping for a quiet holiday in a safe, hassle-free destination.
Up to Wednesday morning we enjoyed ourselves, but it's not likely we will be back to Mexico anytime soon, and certainly not PP.
Take that conclusion any way you want - signing off...
The Canuck
So very sorry Canuck. No one should have to experience this terror. Glad you and your wife got out of there safely. With this latest incident, unfortunetly Hubby has put the Hell No to the 3BD at the Sun we were planning on purchasing in January. Sadly and reluctantly, I have to agree with him. IF we go back and it will be a long time, we'll stick to renting...
and why does the government allow the guy they want to kill to be part owner and a resident at a tourist condo complex? Why is this wise to promote tourism? How is this a safe situation for our grand children? Can I get the official list of which hotels have cartel owners? It seems the Federal Gov has this information, right?

He had a " Shadow Macho Prieto
About 15 days before the shooting in the Sonoran port, a federal agent infiltrated the Bella Sirena set to become the shadow of Gonzalo Inzunza Inzunza , "El Macho Prieto '; watched him day and night .
The mysterious federal agent rented a villa, as part of the strategy to arrest the alleged offender , chief henchmen Ismael " El Mayo " Zambada .
Tucked into the lion's den , the agent almost did not sleep , did not use the beds and sometimes walked the halls with apparent insomnia, have in the villas.
People not paying attention and service staff looked at his " eccentricities " as rare behaviors of someone who " came to relax , to let go of stress," narrated.
Their blankets were behind the door , sleeping rough or behind the glass door , where everything looked .
Their reports were instrumental in operating the 18 December. The action started as at 4:25 pm with a panel that " invaded " the Bella Sirena.
The shooting began immediately, the response of the bodyguards ' El Macho Prieto " was so violent that the element of surprise was lost , so the intervention of two Black Hawk helicopters of U.S. manufacture was necessary , whose arms 50 caliber wreaked havoc in cars of the Assassins . Two gunships also participated.
Inside the rooms the battle lasted a long time, at least two hours before it began arriving reinforcements 'Macho Prieto ' and federal forces attempted to prevent them from reaching the Bella Sirena.
With two cars blocked the entrance so that not more cars from entering reinforcements 'Macho Prieto ' .
The battle took place in the Villa 8 which was destroyed , where it is presumed living Izunza , who took up residence in this port , constantly changing address.
But the operation did not stay there, some suspects attempted to flee and a chase began , the vehicle overturned .
The result: five dead , including Inzunza , although his body was gone, but the federal government has no doubts. Speaking calls criminals , they knew was killed .

All,
Our family is supported by my work as a columnist and that occupation requires a very high degree of character and integrity.
In times of crisis one really finds out who their friends are. A friend would never have publicly challenged the credibility of what I said on here or in the media. That's too bad because I really enjoyed working with her for a few hours on Saturday.
There is no need to apologize because I understand that the truth was not in the best interest of the wallet... and that's always the most important thing. Friendships be dammed. Luckily we are surrounded by real friends and family that would never think of such a thing.
Mike, I know nothing about Pinky's claims, but the gunfire was definitely not over by 5:30. Just look at the times from the posts on this forum from eyewitnesses. Also, your theory about no cartel guys getting away has to be wrong because otherwise Macho Prieto's body wouldn't be missing.

Never said the gun fire was over at 5:30am...I said the heavy gunfire was over by 5:30.......

Top cartel bodies go missing a lot....Another poster talked about that in earlier posts.....It happened recently in Baja...
The stories from some are actually more exciting than the events (its awesome, who needs my telenovela). In a way this is great for penasco, the more 'out there' the stories get the more tourists will say... "ok these stories are getting a life of their own and maybe everyone is just loving the crazy rumors".
the guy who sells your name on a grain of rice told me that his cousin had a banana boat waiting for the state sponsored cartel in case the roads were blocked.
Now, this info is very private and I am only sharing with a small group of people on this public forum. If anyone questions my account i will know who my true friends are and I will promise to never type again on this forum until I forget that I said I was no longer going to go on this forum. Also, for safety of my discounted banana boat operator, I cannot give out a clue as to who this person may be (other than his banana boat is yellow).
I am not anonymous...I am pretty open about who I am. You are the keyboard warrior who trolls the forums looking to argue everything in the hopes of sounding superior and gaining favor with like-minded mental midgets.
I'm sorry pinky. I don't want to discourage you from telling us another 'breaking news' story with partial info. I often find that when one gets frustrated they will start to throw out generalities... its ok, I see it in my line of business from frustrated attorneys.
Maybe you are just giving us clues like a game so that we can put the story board together... if so, I'll play along. I'll wait for your next clue, because this event is getting juicier by each post.
I just find it interesting how two members here are quick to sing like a canary so that they can get attention. with comments such as I would like to not say who told me but let me tell ya. or I would like to remain anonymous so let me give you the play by play of what happened to the media. It reminds me of bored housewives that are more concerned about saying something just so that they can tell someone something. Of course with the disclaimer of "I cant tell you who told me it is very secret secret but someday you will know.
silly girls
It's always much better story when someone starts with, "I really shouldn't tell you this, but".

I am an owner at the Spa. it was Sonoran Spa residents <name here> and his neighbor <name here> that were the ones carjacked.

Stephen,
I was chatting with you on this website early Wednesday morning. I was close by at the Princesa.
I left on Thursday - and my question for you is what happened since then? Is security high there? Have you walked by room 8? Are there people in room 7 and 9?
Do you own your condo?
I have heard for some time that the HOA is ran by the cartel. They don't share numbers or budgets. They just do as they please.

the HOA is ran by the cartels? oh boy.
I'll give out a likely scenario... security guard 'A' is probably given a little bonus to keep quiet. Maybe one of the reasons why some security personnel were questioned. Lets also remember that security guards tend to be the lowest paid workers in a condo association in Mexico.
he rents at esmeralda but he may have had a good view over the sonoran property into the Bella property.
yes, people were in one of the villas pretty close to the villa #8

We've gone to a few stores during the day and returned rather quickly. Security seams normal.
We are in the second year of a lease.
HOA here is operated by owners that are mostly American.
I went for a walk over to the scene yesterday and can say this. Everything we saw that day was easily confirmed and life for all that shared the experience of living through it will never be the same. One can not undo fear. One cannot erase reality. If anything, we might be lucky to suppress the memory. To think that we have this feeling and were two building over, I can't imagine the terror one would feel watching this unfold with a front row seat.
Here is what I would like someone to explain to me…I was there on Tuesday and saw tons of Military, Local Police, and Federal Agents came racing into town with sirens blaring and lights going all with guns out.(All this the day before) They made 0 effort to come in quietly it didn’t take much thought on my part to figure out something big was going to happen so I got the hell out of there. I find it hard to believe none of these guys figured it out. Also the rest of you, are you telling me you had no idea something big was about to happen.
We got into town about 11:30 Tues morning.....We couldn't chk in till after 1:00. Went into town, drove around, ate lunch, and drove around some more. Went into Cholla, went over by Manny's, Las Conchas...went everywhere. Didn't see 1 military person all day, anywhere.
Only thing we saw strange was going out of Cholla Bay. There was a boat on a trailer that we thought looked like it was falling off it. Blocking the road...went by, and there was a middle aged woman laying in the road. Blood appeared to be coming out her mouth as she was laying on her side. Police was already there, and as we pulled away, a ambulance was now close with sirens blaring. It appeared she was the victim of an accident...auto, we assumed.
Other than that....it was as normal a day as I have ever seen there. No indication of anything strange, at all.
It appears the Mexican government agrees with you, this from Pulso de San Luis...
Mexican government statement:
From Raul Benitez, a security expert at Mexico's National Autonomous University:
"It appears that this guy (Inzunza) was opening a very important border (trafficking) corridor," said Benitez. Puerto Penasco is an area with a lot of movement, a lot of traffic, and it's perfect for setting up a corridor to sell cocaine, heroin or marijuana and ship it into the United States, Benitez said, noting the government is shutting off the other big corridors in Texas and California.
The Sonora corridor was the one left for the Sinaloa cartel, and the federal government is trying to prevent Sinaloa from setting down roots there," Benitez said."
That being said, how are they trafficking the drugs into the US? I thought we had all the latest tech stuff to prevent that shit from happening.

it's simple, $$$$
Planes, trains, automobiles, mules, catapults, tunnels, ultralights, and 1000 more ways. You can't stop it....no matter how much money is spent. They find a new way overnight.
War on Drugs...if we had all the money that's been spent in a losing battle, there wouldn't be a homeless-hungry person in the U.S.

Sounds like any other day in Rocky Point to me. The troops come in, the troops go out. Maybe I've just gotten immune to it. I don't even think twice about seeing military vehicles/trucks full of army going up and down the road or riding around town.

In reality, the military was a welcomed sign that the "good guys" were in control. How do we explain the entire situation to our children? Good guys vs bad guys and the good guys won. My little boy asks, "like a hockey game daddy?" All I can do is respond with a "something like that Tommy...something like that."

The "Cartel" doesnt scare me its the law enforcement that scares the hell out of me. Doing a raid where innocent by standers are at. They put alot of peoples lives in danger, second thought they were mostly Americans and its Mexico so who cares.
I completely and totally agree - make it legal already!
(Cannot wait to see what I stirred up with this comment:cool:)
This was written on the other thread.
This guy I know is a part of the culture and he can seriously say that he wouldn't be able to get sh1tty marijuana like the stuff you're talking about to save his life. If his life depended on getting Mexico brick weed, he'd die. He could call 100 people and have 0 chance. 100% of the people he knows buy domestic grown marijuana. With technology these days, nobody needs shitty brick weed from Mexico. If they legalized marijuana tomorrow it would have ZERO impact on the cartels. Just by reading what they are seizing these days, cocaine and meth are the top two.
If pot was legalized and free to import to the U.S. like tomatoes-citrus the market would be overrun with top shelf Mexican Hydro....don't fool yourself.
they'd figure out to move indoors pretty quick. With 4 harvests per year indoors vs 1 outside. Duh

the info is interesting. one major flaw in the article is the complex mentioned where the event took place (it was NOT Las Palomas, it was Bella Sirena).

Everyone keep's saying Bella Sirena as though the only gun battle was there. In fact most of Sandy Beach was involved. There was obviously a gun battle down by the traffic circle with 2 dead bodies and a burnt out truck. That's far from Bella Sirena. there were 2 other trucks along the road at different locations that were involved in a gun battle . I learned today that there was another gun battle near the arch that says welcome to Puerto Penasco. there was also a dead body on the beach. Add all these together and it's a much larger area than one villa at Bella Sirena.

Does anyone have any information and/or pictures of the gun battle at the arch? Understand it involved a blue van? Thank you.
One source denies that Macho was killed, but says he lived in PP for 2.5 years and "everyone knew he' had a home in Las Conchas and moved between the there and Bella Sirena and Puerta Privada - as well as having a plane.
BTW, for those of you PMing me with the suggestion to start a support group to help deal with the stress created from this experience, sorry - not going to happen.
I suggest contacting your family doctor to be referred to an appropriate resource.
Looks like there were some fisherman caught up in "friendly fire" after all?
No matter what the government tries to spin, the facts seem to continue to leak out slowly.

I was just reading that. Translation for others: Some fishermen were driving down to the road towards Cholla Bay when the shooting started at the government thought they were some of the cartel members and started shooting up their pick up truck. They fired dozens of shots at the pick up and a 20-year old was injured and is in the hospital in Hermosillo. Wrong place at the wrong time.
Google Translate
Following the federal operation in search of suspected members of the drug trade in tourism development "Bella Sirena " and where part 2 " Blackhawk " helicopters same guy who fired shots from the ship and targeting vehicles of criminal suspects a vehicle type Ford Bronco , black color ... the backward mode , in which a group of fishermen was traveling on the coastal avenue towards the coast of La Cholla were at the crossroads of fire , resulting with bullet wounds at least one of them, same as reported is admitted to a hospital in serious condition as Hermosillo received a bullet caliber in one of his legs.
What is called "collateral damage" in these cases occurred after a very early hour and that is when local fishermen carry out their activities , were at the exact time of the confrontation , having tried to flee the scene in panic , but that misfortune , federal police mistook criminals and therefore make shots at the target, the vehicle being hit dozens of times as you can see in the picture taken during the events .

I suggest if someone is thinking of coming down soon that you delay your visit. Too much is up in the air. I'm gone for a few days so Feliz Navidad.

Little bit of hearsay you think, wanna share what you heard at Capone's?
When Bob makes a comment like that I pay attention since he traditionally has been anything but a fearmonger. Since I am planning to come down this week, is there something breaking I should know about that would stop me from visiting Penasco, other than what has been discussed already? Would anyone care to share insights?
Thanks.
I am also coming down later this week, have been checking with friends regularly ... and there have been no incidents since 12/18. That is about 5 days with no "action" ... so if someone is suspecting something like retaliation or more conflict ... I agree with JimMcG it would be good speak up now. Anyone?
I too would like to know if there is something up. I have plans to visit over New Years and I'd hate to get my children caught in the crossfire. If this is fear-mongering, so be it, but realize that there may be lurkers watching this thread and your commentary and frankly, this kind of talk does not help. If there is a real concern, don't just toss out scary warnings, and please be more specific. I've survived dicier places than Rocky Point, but I'm also not fond of taking unnecessary risks.
