BTW, for those of you PMing me with the suggestion to start a support group to help deal with the stress created from this experience, sorry - not going to happen.
Sorry if this came across as callous, here is a starting point for help with PTSD:
I would not pay much attention to the PM asking you to start a support group. More than likely they are just messing with you and really don't think you need to start a support group.
I too would like to know if there is something up. I have plans to visit over New Years and I'd hate to get my children caught in the crossfire. If this is fear-mongering, so be it, but realize that there may be lurkers watching this thread and your commentary and frankly, this kind of talk does not help. If there is a real concern, don't just toss out scary warnings, and please be more specific. I've survived dicier places than Rocky Point, but I'm also not fond of taking unnecessary risks.
To everyone asking if they should go down or not, here is my two cents after just returning.
Our family went down this past Friday, 2 days after the shooting, and we came home on Monday. We were in contact with several local friends who kept us informed on what they heard was going on. Some have close friends on the police force. They weren't concerned at all, more relieved that the military took these guys seriously and eliminated what they felt was as threat to the overall community and business and tourism.
Our experience was that if we hadn't have read the news online or seen the video and photos before we went down, we would have never known anything happened. Same old Rocky Point that we are used to. It was extremely slow at all the restaurants we went to, but to be expected the week before Christmas.
Our biggest challenge wasn't security or fear from the military action, it was dealing with all the pot holes around town and terrible road conditions in and out of Las Conchas because of the big downpour on Friday.
Other than that, another great trip, great weather, beautiful beach and too much eating.
Hope that helps out those who are considering a trip.
We moved to Rocky Point with a fairly nice car... 20 months later and it's all but a jalopy. Cracked windshield, big scratch from scraping the wall in the garage, the paint is fading on one side and it all but impossible to keep aligned.
We are thinking that a 4-door F350 like this is about the only way to go-
Yesplease if you suspect anything as our friends are heading down tomorrow and others after xmas..
Come down to RP & enjoy the beautiful beach as we are. Yes it is slow here now but that's just December. The days before the incident you might see 2 people on the entire beach all day.
Keep living your life. After the Colorado shootings people returned to Colorado. After the Tuscon mass shooting people returned to Tuscon and live safely. The difference in RP is these cartel guys werent shooting or harming tourists and the shooting only happened because the military decided to remove them.
As far as retaliation is concerned. Not worried at all about that. Ive worked in Mexico for many years and cartel guys are killed by the military in other cities in Mexico occasionally and you dont hear of cartel returning and harming tourists to retaliate because they have a beef w/ the military. The cartel wants to keep a very low profile and they understand what is good and not good for their business survival.

If you can afford to have a nice truck like this to get trashed, Go for it. The best way of dealing with the roads and driving skills lapses,
Is to have a beater vehicle and something nicer that's very dependable.

We would never recommend that our friends, relatives or neighbours stop visiting Mexico - they can make their own decisions.
But we will be very honest as to why we will never again go there ourselves.
We were incredibly naive to believe we were safe in Puerto Penasco, despite many of our friends warning us of that PP had changed since they used to go down 15-20 years ago.
Many folks memories will fade, but I'm pretty sure anyone that experienced the war zone for 5 hours won't forget for a long time.
If we hadn't witnessed what we had we would likely not believed it. I have had plenty of experiences where I escaped injury or death over the years - some by luck - others because I could do something about the situation.
By sitting in a condo within several hundred feet of unseen helicopter gunships firing gatling guns at unknown targets, then hours of sporadic gunfire - without any means of protecting ourselves, understanding what was going on or who the 'enemy' was, left me with the most helpless feeling I have ever had in my life.
Then to be presented a couple days later with the worst spin ever about how this was a small skirmish confined to one area, by bad guys who were "just visiting on a holiday" and then to gradually day by day find out that it was even bigger than what we knew we had experienced, was the final straw to convince us to stay away.
Like I said, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I know this won't affect those that know PP better than I ever will now, but please...
...don't insist it is safe, it just isn't.
And BTW, we were also left with the feeling that as tourists, even if it is the slow season, we had absolutely no value - were worthless pawns in an obvious growing war. Not to mention the workers, security guards, and any others that were innocent victims of this battle.
I realize this isn't the best post for Christmas day, but as we sat hugging each other and our children and their families today, thankful we were alive - it was overall a most unpleasant Xmas that was supposed to have been spent in 'paradise'
Canuck, we all understand you will never come to penasco again. You have told us on numerous occasions along with repeating the events on numerous occasions. No one is saying that penasco is safe to all crime (just like any town or city in the world). At this point, it may be best if you seek professional help to deal with the experience. I am sure anyone who experiences a horrible event may be apprehensive about walking into the same situation again (ex. someone who saw a mass shooting at a movie theatre or someone who was a bystander in a shooting outside of a grocery store). To the person who experiences those events, life will never be the same anytime they visit a similar place.

"Keep living your life. After the Colorado shootings people returned to Colorado. After the Tuscon mass shooting people returned to Tuscon and live safely."
Listen. I'm not interested in bickering about what is safe and what is not. I'm smart enough to figure out for myself when I'm in an unsafe situation and I know how to take care of myself. Hell, I've been to Chicago. At night. But making these kind of comparisons is ridiculous. There is a huge difference between one crazy with a gun shooting up a crowd and two helicopter gunships with mini-guns blazing, armed troops with hordes of military-grade weapons and armored vehicles racing around having rolling gun battles. When the cartels start fighting, or the Mexican Army goes after drug people, there appears to be little concern for collateral damage. I'm not concerned about random danger, I have no control over that and I will deal with it when it happens without worrying about it. However, if some up-and-coming-power-crazy drug lord wants to roar into Rocky Point and take out all the competition, I'm not interested in a front-row seat. If the army decides the town needs a purging, I don't want to be a first-hand witness, I'm just fine with watching it on the news. I am interested in hearing any information on places I should avoid, like maybe the places the cartel people frequent. I'm not judging them or condemning them, I just don't want to be around when they decide to settle their differences with others.
That's all. I'm not some shaking-in-my boots fear-monger wetting my pants when I hear a backfire. I'm just your average old-fart that is concerned about the safety and welfare of the people that trust me to take care of them. I appreciate that there is a community of people that reside in the Rocky Point area. experienced with the local culture and customs, and that you have an online community where you can share your experiences and disseminate important information for everybody. I can read between the lines and I can tell when I'm getting BS'd. I've been around the block once or twice and I know the difference between shit and shinola. When people throw out vague warnings and then disappear, I tend to discount their wolf-crying. Given the recent events in RP, however, ANY sensible person would want to be as confident as possible that they are not leading their family into a dangerous situation. That is all.
Thank you very much for all the discussion, it has been enlightening and I appreciate it. If anybody has any sensible advice to offer, I am all ears.
I understand the fears of the previous posters and I too think it was ridiculous of Roberto to post his remark and disappear. He is not usually that irresponsible and is usually on target about tourist information. I am heading down to RP to go fishing and I am sure there will be a lot less people to deal with at the boarder but this will blow over and people will come down again.

Dry Heat...
...thanks for the advice, but you just don't get it. I have experienced horrible events in past.
Mass shooting or shooting outside a grocery store, while traumatic events to those nearby, isn't even close to the same situation as being stuck in the middle of a war zone.
You certainly have the right to your opinion, but so do I, and to repeat so you clearly understand mine - a War Zone.

You guys need to take this offline in private. It is now looking like a P****ng match. Pretty much everything that needs to be said has been said.

A person told me that 50 cal ammo like they were firing from the helicopters can penetrate solid walls, so you were not entirely safe sitting in your condo. Not only did the helicopters fire along Sandy beach road from the desert but were firing over the roofs of the condos.
And BTW, we were also left with the feeling that as tourists, even if it is the slow season, we had absolutely no value - were worthless pawns in an obvious growing war. Not to mention the workers, security guards, and any others that were innocent victims of this battle.
I agree, when something like this goes down. YOU ARE ENTIRELY ON YOUR OWN.
one's experience with a traumatic event will always be a huge event to that person. One can be reminded of what happened years later by seeing something that triggers a flashback. Some are never able to go back to that place again. I completely understand.
The rug just isn't quite big enough to sweep all that dirt under.
I also noticed that all the photos I posted of the shootout have all been taken down for some strange reason......... Hmmm
Rick I think only you I and Canuck , StephenHeislerand and Edehlermann
were here on Sandy beach the day this event happened. Others that seem intent on downplaying what happened, are doing so from a safe distance, or have other motives for doing so.
By the way the Military threatened people with jail for taking photos.
Yes, it was an awful thing that you went through. But as far as being entirely on your own, what exactly would have been your preferred scenario? Did you expect employees of the resort to come and check on you and risk their lives in the process? Does being a tourist entitle you to special attention in extreme circumstances? Do you think that if you were in a hotel in Paris or London and there was a bombing the local police would treat you any differently? You are entirely on your own no matter what and no matter where you happen to be.

Canuck,
Unfortunately I am not known for my brevity so this may require some patience.
I totally agree with your decision and would encourage you not to put your family or yourself through another possible traumatic situation like that.
I assume by your 'Nam de Plume" that you are from Canada. I have spent many wonderful summer days on the lakes there and have had many business visits. I assume those lakes are still safe, except from bears. We did have one attack our camp one time, but he left and we went back.
You mentioned war zones. We all have had traumatic experiences in our lives. I was born quite prematurely and according to my mother barely made it. Seventy-nine years later I have been in two nasty car accidents caused by teenagers, prior to cellphones. I survived an airplane crash landing in London, Ontario, in which the stewardess jumped up and said, "Well I bet that soiled a bit of laundry, now didn't it?" I survived a bout with colon cancer and a twenty plus year marriage to my first wife. But there is an experience that afterwards was pretty funny, but not at the time.
About 10 years after WWII I was serving in the Army on the Island of Okinawa. My life was pretty bland there until I was put on temporary duty with the MPs. The only thing I can equate my policing abilities would be a comparison to Barney in the old Andy Griffith Show. While the biggest portion of my time was spent in the guard tower at the prison there was a time when I was assigned to jeep patrol duty. Fortunately I was paired with an old time Sargent who knew his was around. We received a call that there was someone shooting a rifle in the village of Shimubuku. We went over and there was nothing going on. We got out of the jeep and out came a very drunk Japanese man with a rifle. We ducked behind the jeep and he started firring. One bullet grazed the hood and zinged past my head. The Sarge noticed a water cistern on the building above him and we started shooting at it. I'm sure I probably hit some poor birds nesting somewhere but Sarge blasted that cistern and the water came pouring down on the guy. He, thinking he was wounded surrendered and we took him off to the station in cuffs. I can tell you, it took a while for my pants to dry after that.
So what's my point? I have known abject fear and can understand your feelings. It is traumatic, but while it may not totally go away, it will dissipate. Now, if you want to know about trauma, look at those men and women who appear on the wounded warrior adds. People were shooting AT them and planting bombs to maim them. I can't imagine what they are going through and it makes our problems all so trivial.
Canuck, I wish you and your family the best. Hug and love your kids and I hope and pray that your family will come through the other side from this all and find comfort in your lives.

I agree. I just want to make it clear to anyone who is planning to come to Sandy beach, not to be fooled into thinking they will be in a safe gated community, with security. You come here entirely at your own risk, and if something goes down you are on your own. You will receive assistance or direction from no one.
Do you think that if you were in a hotel in Paris or London and there was a bombing the local police would treat you any differently? As a matter of fact YES.
Nice if you want a Tucson gun show bought Glock put to your temple....

When we went back to try and get back into the room, we were stopped at the gate. The guard didn't speak english and called the mgr on his cell...."Las Palmas is officially closed now." Can I go back in? "If you go back in we aren't responsible"

Highly doubtful. Americans (yes, I'm GENERALIZING) have a tendency to believe their lives are somehow worth something extra and expect special treatment when in a foreign country.

I disagree. Canuck was a witness to this event. it appears certain parties would prefer he not describe what happened, and are doing their best to dissuade him from speaking.
You left the condo in the middle of it and then tried to get back into the resort?
No, we left around 1:30. Went downtown and ate, drove around, took photos. Realized we left some things....stopped (5 PM'ish) back by. The manager also said the "We're expecting another shootout tonight".....we left immediately. Left the things there.
Karina - Please consider removing this post as anyone allegedly impacted by last week's events certainly would not want to be publicly named on this site or within any other forum, etc. without specific confirmation on their part.
There was some server maintenance a day or so ago with Tyler moving the forum to a temp server and then back. I noticed your pics were gone after that, so probably a hiccup in the restore process. Thanks for posting them again!
I live in Sandy Beach full time. The military did what they needed to do to keep RP safe. It would be scary if the military did NOT do anything.
FACTS are the FACTS How many American tourists have been murdered in RP or died by gun fire in RP in the last 30 years?? Probably ZERO...I for one like that fact and like those odds..I and thousands of American tourists have been driving around RP some daily, some a few days every month for years without any problems.
Some on this forum talk about risks. Anywhere you live or go its entirely at your own risk. Your not 100% safe in ANY country. In the USA for example there are mass shootings, car jackings, home invasions, drug busts, drug shootouts, helicopters chasing bad guys, police shootouts. If you go to a movie theater in the USA its at your own risk. When the bullets start flying in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson do you think a police officer is going to appear in 3 seconds and save your life? Home invasions and carjackings occur in Phoenix & many cities in the US all the time and if you decide to own a home or drive a car in the USA its at your own risk & if it happens to you the USA police are not going to get there in time to protect you.
If your one of those people who are now afraid to come to RP. Great more room on the beach for me and my family & friends. Stay at home in the USA lock your doors, dont drive, dont go to the movies, dont go to the grocery store, pull your kids out of school because of the USA school shootings, dont leave your house.

Well your first "FACT" is wrong. Not "probably" wrong, definitely wrong. Trish Willoughby murdered in 1991. http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1991-10-30/news/murder-at-rocky-point/
Oh that's not drug/cartel/gang related you say? So you can point me to the crime statistics compiled and posted for Rocky Point? How about rapes and robberies? Assaults? DUIs? Oh, I guess the "FACTS" aren't available.
SO what you can really say is that "I and thousands of American tourists have been driving BLISSFULLY UNAWARE around RP some daily, some a few days every month for years without any problems." It's lucky I guess that there were two local fishermen driving that black Bronco and not American tourists...
One major difference in the U.S. vs. Mexico, is that when there is a carjacking, shooting at a Safeway, shootout at a theater, or any such violence I CAN SHOOT BACK.
I spoke with someone who was here on Sandy beach the day it happened. I will not name names. Two people left Sandy beach on the road to town but were stopped by a police block. They turned around and decided to take the other road, the one with the arch. When they got there they were dragged out of their truck, and it was carjacked by people in masks. They did not know who they were, military, or cartel. They had to take cover as a gunfight was going on. They never saw their truck again and they can not even collect on the insurance.
I call BS on that story. Ofcoarse your not going to mention names because they dont exist. Were your apparent friends just out for a early morning 5am fun drive around town site seeing?? I was in RP and NOBODY was just driving around especially at 5am. Anybody in the area especially after hearing gun shots stayed put. When you hear a bunch of gun shots near by you stay put and lock your doors you dont get in the car and go for a stroll around town.

Come back when you have some facts.
Wow Sub you really set me straight....One American tourist in 50 years......I will take those stats ANYDAY as that is an amazingly safe record for the hundreds of thousands of tourists that have SAFELY gone to RP over that time frame....
Sub, your example is from 1991?!?! I guess we have to go back a few decades to find out. Also, if a violent crime does happen to an American in Mexico (especially in Penasco that has a heavy American presence, I am sure we will hear about it ten fold). Anything happens bad to an American in Mexico certainly gets media attention up north. Considering we don't hear much of anything of this sort, I think the probability is still pretty low compared to other areas of the world (or much less the US).
I sometimes feel like I am in the middle of two groups... one that promises bubble gum rainbows in rocky point with zero crime and the other than gets giddy and hopeful for any negative rumor or story of something bad happening. Just like in politics, it would be nice if we did not deal with two extremes and people just looked out for the interests of the majority (down the middle).

Also SUB you need to re read your article from Newtimes. It looks like this American was harmed by her American husband trying to collect a $750k life insurance policy......So the lesson learned here is stay out of RP if your spouse doesnt like you.....
I live in Sandy Beach full time. The military did what they needed to do to keep RP safe. It would be scary if the military did NOT do anything.
I agree no place is safe BUT I do think people should be in full possession of the facts, and decide from that what they want to do.
before I came to Rocky Point there was that shootout on the main street where 5 people were killed plus a innocent person. I read about it and decided it was a risk I was willing to take to come here based on the facts of the situation.
You have to make up your own mind, but you can only do that if you have factual information to go on.
OK so since both of you have your heads firmly up your arses, here is what I was saying:
I PROVIDED YOU WITH ONE EASILY DOCUMENTED, FACTUALLY TRUE, MURDER OF AN AMERICAN PROVING YOU WRONG.
I LIVED THROUGH THAT WHOLE MURDER AND KNOW THE FACTS. I EVEN KNOW TRISH HUISH'S FAMILY AND WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH.
I DID NOT SAY THAT WAS THE ONLY ONE, IN FACT I ASKED YOU TO POINT ME TO WHERE I CAN FIND HOMICIDE AND VIOLENT CRIME STATISTICS FOR PUERTO PENASCO BECAUSE YOU CAN'T.
I'M NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT YOU "THINK" OR "PROBABLY KNOW" I'M INTERESTED IN FACTS THAT I CAN VETT.
MANY OF THE CRIMES THAT HAVE HAPPENED IN PUERTO PENASCO HAVE NOT MADE THE NEWS IN PHOENIX, TUCSON, OR THE U.S. IN GENERAL SO I WOULDN'T ASSUME THAT ANY AMERICAN HARMED IN ROCKY POINT IS GOING TO BE REPORTED. YOU GIVE OUR NEWS ORGANIZATIONS HERE WAY TOO MUCH CREDIT WHEN IT SUITS YOU.
MIGHT HAVE A TAD BIT OF TROUBLE IDENTIFYING AMERICANS BURNED UP BODIES IN CHARRED SUV'S HIT BY MINIGUN FIRE FROM GUNSHIPS DON'T YOU THINK?
For anyone going down soon, our friends went down yesterday and drive was uneventful. There are no checkpoints but say to watch your speed even past sonoyta on the open highway.
I call BS on that story. Ofcoarse your not going to mention names because they dont exist.
This is a eyewitness account from the person it happened to. Not a rumor that I heard from someone else. I am not going to mention names for obvious reasons. if you have a problem with that to bad. Believe what you want to believe.

Oh now I know your the crazy Mexico hater guy that bashes Mexico every chance he gets. I just read your previous posts...
So SUB you have pointed out ONE American tourist that has been killed in RP ,( killed by her American husband for the insurance money), in the last 50 years. And we all know you have frantically searched the net for ANY other American that has been killed in RP BUT there is none. You say its because the media doesnt report them???? LOL are you kidding me??? If ANYTHING happens in RP not only does the American media report it but the American consulate reports it as well.
Nice try Rocky Point hater. Why are you so bitter?

Frantically searched? Hardly. You are the one who said you had all the FACTS. Guess you came up a bit short? As I said I knew Trish's family so that was an easy one for me.
Again you are wrong about the American media reporting anything that happens in RP. I didn't hear about the home invasion and rape in Las Conchas nor did I see the rolling gun battle along Calle 13 a few years ago. Can't you get any FACTS right?
Sounds like your beer might be a little bitter, did the cartel piss in it?
Oh another fact you got wrong. Check out the American Consulate page from our embassy in Mexico. Notice anything missing? Like anything related to violence in Mexico much less RP? I sure did. http://mexico.usembassy.gov/
The lack of intellect on this forum is seriously disturbing sometimes! Right Larry? Look at this JAMOKE Mike for example. This guy in the same sentence uses the words FACT and PROBABLY. "It's a fact that PROBABLY zero...". You have to be a serious moron to say that you know something factually and then use probably in the same sentence. SMH
Please stop blowing hot air out of your mouth. Someone with higher intellect and a simple understanding of math can determine the probabilities of these things happening to you. I have an almost 0% chance that I will ever encounter anything you mentioned above in my lifetime, so why do you continually bring this up?
I also have the same extremely low chance (in the thousands of 1 percent) of getting caught in cross fire in RP.
So please, for the last time. Stop using the "shit happens in USA too" argument.
They changed the sign pretty quick, huh? (Sorry, couldn't resist... seeing a sign prohibiting fireworks with bullet holes in it. I guess the bad guys don't read the signs.)

Can some one translate? I think I know what it says but not that sure of my Spanish - and too lazy to try to translate it elsewhere :)
Frantically searched? Hardly. You are the one who said you had all the FACTS. Guess you came up a bit short? As I said I knew Trish's family so that was an easy one for me.

This case was prosecuted in the states because it was basically planned there by the husband and his transvestite from Mexico. This is hardly valid as an American targeted for murder by Mexicans. This is more a closet queen hot for a Mexican transvestite Sub.
I have deleted my original post that this is a reply to. I would appreciate if all references to my post on this matter be deleted.
This was told to me personally and I posted it on a public forum, without that party's permission. This in no way means it is not true, but I do not want to cite a private conversation, on a public forum.
Dryheat I am with you on this. Instead of extreme views on either side it's time for sober rational reflection, maybe I am guilty of not doing this.
I feel most sorry for the people of Puerto Penasco. if there is any negative blow back from this unfortunate incident, they will suffer the most. Let's hope that's not the case.

It's just that the sunshine and lollipops type posts irk me having witnessed this event. It's just not the truth which as you say lies somewhere in between.

Murder is murder except on this forum. MikeHeadInSand specifically said it was a FACT that there were no American's murdered in Puerto Penasco and I easily pointed out that he was wrong. At this point the only reason Americans haven't been killed by the Cartels or Mexican Military is pure luck. Perhaps along with the flares you guys need to tape American flags to your car rooftops to avoid being the next black Bronco. Oh and whatever you're hot for is all you man. (black widow?)

Mike is correct! There have been NO tourists murdered in RP. The woman murdered by her husband/lover was not some random incident. This is not a threat to the rest of us who love to visit RP. SUB-Human why do you bother with this forum if you hate the place? Read a book, play pool, watch reruns of Perry Mason! Get out of here!
For those that are somewhat new on this forum. about 6-7 years ago we had a great divide between those who wanted the old penasco and those who were a part of the new penasco (development). we had great arguments and looking back, those who were not happy with the development were partially right when we saw the over development of penasco (lots of dishonest people involved and all of us suffered for it). I bring this out because it still bothers some if any positive comes out of penasco and they will certainly jump right in when something bad happens (almost like they are waiting to say "I told you so"). Unfortunately it has led some to prefer the destruction of the place in order to feel better. I have no problem with comments, I just get tired when the comments are simply put out there to 'hate' no matter what.
Headed to rocky point tomorrow..!!! I call b.s. on all this negativity about this awesome town.
RSCHLIG looking forward to seeing you down here on the beach. We were out on the boat yesterday in RP and the dolphins are everywhere and the weather is great.
Dont know how long you have been following this forum but DRYHEAT is exactly right. Their are a few people on this forum that are EXTREME haters of RP and any development in RP and they stalk this forum 24/7 bashing RP any chance they get in hopes of driving away anymore new people from coming to RP. They like the RP of 20 years ago & despise all the new resorts / condos / development / golf courses / cruise ship port project, etc. We all know that these few people are the minority but they are like a nasty fly constantly buzzing around a productive group of humans.
You just have to let it go in one ear and out the other w/ these people. They are going to hate RP forever while WE the majority enjoy the beautiful resorts and beaches....
We arrived in Rocky Point this afternoon. When we stopped to gas up in Why, I started to bs with the owner. She told me there was a huge group of DEA agents that met in front of her gas station before and after the shoot out. She made it sound like the DEA was involved from the start.

Well that can't be me as I liked the Rocky Point of 55 years ago much better than in was just 20 years ago.:D Hey I still love Mexico and parts of Cholla and PP, but I don't much like it when the powers that be leave body's laying around town:eek:, the bad guy's or the good.
Funny...dry heat throwing out the olive branch after trying to club us doubters about the wisdom of building all those faulty towers for years! Then Mike...most likely a real estate genius that appears out of nowhere and 360 another boosterette start slinging insults.Mike, why not share some good practical knowledge for visitors while you fight the good fight? Multitask a bit bro.....
Kenny do you remember when the accountant for Privada was found beat to death by the side of the road after swiping 80k and the boosters claimed it was just a car accident?
RockyPoint 1973 was a great place.....two lobster tails for 5 bucks.....then they fished them all out.....progress
Damn jet lag has me up....Oh also this is a message I sent Tim Stellar of the star on Nov.24. For some reason he wrote nothing......
Jerry Kelly
Tim you should do a story on the rolling gun battle from Sonoyta to the outskirts of Rockypoint last week. The locals on the Rockypointtalk forum kept it quiet rather than warn American travelers because they are trying to protect the local economy.I think the news needs to get out. This tied with the Chicago Cartel Trial, the search for Quintero could put tourists in a the wrong place at the wrong time for a bit.Karen Gonzalez attack and near death in Cochise County by narcos still has not been solved...things may be heating up.
Crossed in Sonoyta at about 8:15 tonight. A few cars in front of me, uneventful drive. The California plated car in front did get the red and I got the green light which was sweet because I was seriously loaded to the gills with toys and clothes for kids and friends. Looking forward to a great week or 2 in Penasco!
Seen this before. Yes, the murder happened in PP, but very controversial as to the facts. Her husband was in love with a tranny from mexico and some accounts of the story say her husband did it. I wouldn't count this one on the list. I know there have been Americans that have been killed while in PP, but it was due to their own stupidity(drunk)

You're just splitting hairs and all of you doing so look pretty foolish. Can you even provide me accidental death statistics for Americans in Rocky Point? What about the kid run over by the panga, was he being stupid?
Oh and by "seen this before" do you mean this murder or have you seen other American tourists/tranvestite murders? Please share.
I know there have been Americans that have been killed while in PP, but it was due to their own stupidity(drunk)
Sorry, Todd. Not always the case:
Spring Break, several years ago. College student doing back flips off the bar at Pithaya. Broke his neck and died (yes, alcohol related).
An old couple many years ago. We were staying at the Best Western and had just talked with them, really nice folks (not drunk). Got into their Suburban and headed up the street to La Curva for dinner. Crossing the main street right by Reggies, a local (he was drunk) in a pickup ran the stop sign and broadsided them at about 50 mph. The Suburban rolled five times, killing both of them instantly. The sound of that accident, crunching metal, and screeching still lingers in my mind, as well as the sight of them dead.
5 years ago (maybe?) American guy swimming just off the beach on the Mirador (not drunk). Run over by a panga pulling a banana boat. The prop sliced open his head and neck. He bled out on the beach and died, there was nothing anybody could do to save him.
Few years back, odd morning thunderstorm rolled through as we were preparing to launch from the harbor. Local struck by lightning and killed (not drunk).
Also a few years ago, early spring. Mexican fishing boat with 8 gringos catches fire (not drunk). We see the smoke from the distance and take off towards them. All of them in the water. Saved them all, including the 400 lb.+ guy that we had a hell of a time getting on the boat. A few minor burns, some broken ribs on some of the guys. Could have been a lot worse.
3 years ago, forum member heading down south of Ajo (not drunk). Pick up truck in opposite lane has sleepy driver, comes into their lane and head-ons them. The wife later dies after months of being in a coma.
Similar story involving a Suburban (doctor from Tucson and his wife, if I remember correctly), small pickup heading south (young driver with other young passengers) past the shrine head-ons them coming around the corner before the bridge. I believe 5 or 6 people died in that accident from both vehicles. You can still see the shrine of laid out white sticks on the ground in that location.
Last year, coming across Dead Cow Highway between Maricopa and Gila Bend. Truck in front of us (coming home from Mexico) veers off the road, tries to recover, rolls several times, ejecting the driver and his dog, catches fire and then explodes (not drunk). We were able to get the driver away from the truck before he literally became road pizza. Administered first aid until police/paramedics arrived and the Lifeflight helicopter came. He was lucky, he was in extremely bad shape, but the MCSO investigator told me the next day that he would live.
I guess what I'm getting at is that there are LOTS of ways to die, coming or going, or while you're there perfectly sober, just enjoying the beach and having fun. The incidents listed above are the ones that readily come to my mind over the years, some I witnessed, some I only have knowledge of. I know of no instance of any gringo being killed by the cartel. However, I DO know directly of a near miss (bullet hole through the door of the vehicle) as they happened to pass a shooting scene taking place just outside of Penasco a couple of years ago where the sicarios told the victims (I think one or two of the victims were local police) to get out and run and sprayed the area with AK-47s. The gringos just happened to catch a stray round as they drove by. Wrong place, wrong time.
Are you more likely or less likely to die/be killed in Mexico? Anybody's guess, no matter how some here want to argue probability. The incidents I mentioned above (with the exception of the AK-47 spray) could have happened most anywhere and the folks involved would still be just as dead (or lucky to be alive) as they are today. Has anything that I wrote above stopped me from going to Rocky Point? Nope. When it's my time, it's my time and I refuse to worry about or even speculate how it might happen.
Yes, I am sarcastic at times about BOTH sides of the 'Is Rocky Point safe?' argument. Why? I've seen both sides and the lengths that both the promoters and detractors will go to make their point -- well, I find it both insane and amusing. ;)

I meant that I had read this story before about the murder in '91.
As far as accidental deaths, I have no hard numbers, but I attended a funeral for two guys that had an accident on highway between PP and the boarder.
It was sad and unfortunate. They were not drunk. Speed may have been a factor. Vehicle rolled multiple times and both died.
I know there have been other american deaths due to carelessness (Speed and Alcohol)
I heard about a kid that was on a banana boat and fell off then when they circled back to get him, the prop cut him under his arm pit area almost died. That was an accident of course. Anytime you participate in any activity of that type (ATV, Banana Boat, Para-sail the Glider rides that buzz the beach) while in any country including the US, they are not liable.

Drove down with the wife and 2 kids, grandma, brother and his new girlfriend yesterday (her first time to RP.) All of us aware of what happened re the helicopter gun battle, having read all 700+ posts. Except the kids I mean - I want them reading Harry Potter not Sub's hysterical screaming.
The drive was perfectly normal, although the line at Sonoyta to get out was longer than I would have expected. Arrived at the Sun on schedule, very quiet. Bella Sirena main gate still closed on the right side as you look at it from outside. I did see some bullet holes in the road outside the Bella Sirena. All the other evidence has been cleaned up (looks like one of the busted signs from the avalanche at the roundabout has also been fixed.)
Had dinner at Casa del Capitan where I can report that the Carne Verde was as delicious as always. Restaurant was about 1/4 full, typical of the last few times we've been there on week nights. Brother bought new GF a rose, and got one for wife, daughter, and grandma too. He's really working hard on this one.
John Deere beach zamboni out this morning, workers still making progress on the railing replacement. Heading to JJ's for lunch. All is apparently normal.
Maybe we have our heads up our asses but I am really glad that we weren't here for the gunbattle. I feel very sorry for those (esp Canuck) who's lives have been changed by watching that live rather than hearing about it 3rd and 4th hand on this fine forum. We'll keep coming (and being aware and as safe as possible). And hope that doesn't ever happen again.
If anyone wants to set me straight in person over a beer at JJs I'll buy.
Running gun battle<> I don't think they have a prayer.
Just last month boosters were saying that all the trouble was coming from Caborca. In fact the cartel war is way more complicated.Sonoyta is a hot spot. The cruise ship passengers will just have to deal with the slim chance of being in a running gun battle. it would be a great photo op!

Jerry, did you read about the guy that planned the massacre, the gilo gig in saric, what happened to him.
You summed up my feelings on the whole situation quite well and I have to echo your comments. I believe to do nothing and leave Macho in Sandy Beach, could have seen the entire area get bad over time. Plus, if it was well known that authorities were "letting" Macho live where the American tourists live, that would have had a devastating impact on what perceptions Americans had about the entire security situation there if a high ranking cartel member was living amongst them. It wasn't as if he was living in another section of town that is less lived-in by Americans, no he was in fact their neighbor in Sandy Beach making it a completely different story. From what I have gathered, Macho had not been living in Bella Serena that long. Is that correct?

I am sure this would bring you the greatest pleasure in the world. How humanitarian of you to say one has a slim chance of being in a running gun battle and then being in a picture. Interesting to see how you value human life with a crude comment like that. says a lot about a person.

Come back when you have some facts.
I believe comparing the violence in Mexico/Rocky Point to that of the violence in the USA/Arizona can be very difficult and can be like comparing apples to oranges with correlation problems. There might be more crime in Mexico, but could a lot of that be more petty crimes like vehicle theft and property crimes? I think to properly assess the security situation in Puerto Penasco, we have to take a wait and see approach on what (if any) response we may see from Macho's death and any blowback from it by the cartel. Macho's death does not mean things are out of control in Puerto Penasco or the Cartel will retaliate so we should not jump to conclusions about something that isn't there. I've lived overseas for a good chunk of my life, been to 24 countries all over the world- I can tell anyone that if they do not assess their safety and security situation when they travel to a foreign country, they are doing themselves a big dis-service. I have always done so because as an American traveling overseas, you are more vulnerable especially if you don't speak their language. When I was in the Palestinian Controlled Territories, I pretended I was a Canadian versus an American because I did not want to fall into the hands of the PLO or Hamas or some other terrorist organization, and when asked I was from Canada. Being aware of one's surroundings is key to survival and keeping yourself safe at all times. Prior to all this when I traveled down to Rocky Point, I always took security precautions and had different safety plans should something happen. But I do the same thing too back here in the USA when I go to places as one should never let their guard down.
You summed up my feelings on the whole situation quite well and I have to echo your comments. I believe to do nothing and leave Macho in Sandy Beach, could have seen the entire area get bad over time. No, you're wrong on both accounts. You're missing the point. Not only did he live there for more than a year, everybody knew and nobody cared. The military didn't do this because it was good for the town or American tourists. The only reason why we're talking about this is because MP got fired. If he wouldn't have been f****** up for the corporation he worked for, he'd still be living there and we wouldn't be having this conversation. The #1 said, "you're fired!" and then called the military to deliver MP's unemployment benefits.
