Also heard A outfitter from Baja was here looking for a place to do camel tours in the Pinacates or to the south.....which from my trip to Egypt I can tell you is a real pain in the ass but fun. Also looking for a zip line location down south and found a good one in the mountains you access by crossing the tracks before the Alduna checkpoint 30 miles south. He was really discouraged by the level of Homeport progress too..

http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/puerto_penasco As global warnings effects increase the wind will make more problems for the homeport....constant dredging, sand blasting winds, wells drying up...a wasteland ruled by roving bands of armed men in off-road vehicles ....hey sounds like fun.....maybe The Road Warrior/ Mad Max day trip for cruisers....
Translated from another story in there. The distribution of money and where the majority of the money spent on the tours make PP sound like the Parking Garage at an Airport Terminal.
Mexico, DF - Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, will host the first home port for cruises in Mexican territory.
It is estimated that open their doors in 2016, in accordance with Guillermo Ruiz of Teresa, general coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine of the SCT.
This project will leave a poured out economic of up to $12 million per month in the region, but, according to authorities and experts, will also require stronger regulation for the cruise industry.
The home port is in a breakwater, a pier and terminal building, with a combined investment of more than one billion pesos, virtually all from the federal budget.
Although several Mexican ports, such as Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Cozumel, are frequently visited by these vessels, only benefit from a part of the business: the shopping that the tourists do while walking around its streets.
Eduardo González Cid, adviser and liaison of the Tourism Committee of the Chamber of Senators for the cruise industry, explained that the fuel load and the victualling, which also generate millions of dollars in resources, remain in the ports from which these vessels, which in the case of the Pacific are San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Cruise ships in the Caribbean are often out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale or San Juan.
Javier Tapia, holder of the Tourism Commission of Sonora, said that with the construction of this home port, the Mexican Government will increase the economic benefits for the northwest region of the country, because the associated paths were drawing ports of Sonora, Sinaloa, Baja California Sur and Baja California.
With the attraction of a single vessel, will generate an economic impact of $3 million weekly for the region.
A third of those resources come from the services of victualling of food, drinks and other necessary inputs for the journey.
Another million dollars generated by the sale of fuel, in the port of Guaymas, where there is already the necessary infrastructure.
The remaining million would be associated with the expenditure that the tourists do while tours.
Kinda sounds like the ship will come into port with fuel and provisions, pic up passengers and then the last 1/3 of the monies will be spread through out the rest of the stops on the tour?
No matter which translator I use that story is just sad. I thought that this was pretty funny as well... The 'home' port of Peñasco, unknown by the cruise companies.
Guaymas makes out.....but except for the unfortunate hassle this reaccouring event will visit on american visitors it is sort of free money.... no bonds etc.....except the costs of upkeep, extra police ,wear and tear on the already broke down infrastructure...strings are attrached... We just can't see them yet
Penasco being selected by Mexico's Federal Gov. To be the first & only home port in Mexico I believe will be a huge success for the Penasco's economy. The negative comments are from naysayers who always pop up no matter any projects long term benefits to the population. Miami, FL. Has a few dozen or more cruise ships coming and going weekly, there's one or two other home ports on the west coast of Fl. I'm not aware of any pollution issues brought by the ships. IMO & as a cruiser myself, I can only see positives for the citizens of Penasco. The list of benefits the ships bring to a local economy is enormous. Not one person from Penasco need work on the ships to benefit from the business activity generated by the ships. Overall the Home Port is the best thing to happen here in a long long time. I can't wait to see ships docking. Penasco's growth will be awesome and its population will benefit greatly. Don't bet against this one.

The fact that you are comparing Miami Florida and PP tells me that you are irrational. I do not need to know anything else.
A friend just returned from Manzanillo to look at coffee plantation a buddy owns and play golf on the family private course. The city has plenty of fish to fry but is poised to capture the Mexican cruise market when it becomes a reality. Wading in the surf on his first day he stepped on a nail in a piece of wood...right through his foot it went...."with growth there is pain" his Mexican buddy noted.. Air

Bastards are planning one of those evil " swim with the Dolphins" parks....makes me sick
From the Sonoran "What me Worry" blog
"In our Home Port X blog Wendy mentioned they would need a total of 73,000 one ton concrete cubes to complete the need for that size cube. There are approximately 6,000 poured right now. They will also need approximately 8,000 of the 10 ton cubes, of which they now have approximately 400 and are waiting on the arrival of more molds for both sizes."
OK Jerry, I never thought I would say this, but we found common ground! I can't stand those Dolphin parks either. If you want to swim w/ the dolphins, go out on a fishing boat, and jump in! Don't break up a dolphin family for your pleasure.
And the pay......
How does that compare to a cleaner from Jamaica who works on a Royal Caribbean ship 10 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no time off and no benefits? A cleaner on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship makes around $550 a month performing strenuous work under difficult circumstances, far from the comforts of home. That turns out to around $1.75 an hour. They are tied to contracts lasting anywhere from 6 to 9 months without a single day off.

Hey Jerry I think you and this gal have something in common!
Was that a Dolphin Taco shop? Man that must suck dragging a kicking and screaming Dolphin to the killing floor!
Sorry, to all vegetarians and vegans but science has proven that the final push to our brains evolutionary development was eating cooked foods and meats.
Just one of many links to reports and studies. SCIENCE! lol. http://www.livescience.com/24875-meat-human-brain.html
How ever back to what Jerry is saying is just leave the damn Dolphins where they belong, swimming in the Ocean and feel fortunate to see them when you are out.
Here is some interesting and disturbing info about these swim with programs. http://www.prijatelji-zivotinja.hr/index.en.php?id=92
"Hazards to Health
In their frantic pursuit of profits, the operators of petting pools and swim with programmes will not tell the participants that they risk a hazard not to just the dolphin's health but their OWN! Certain illnesses can be transmitted, such as salmonella from dolphins to humans. Add to this that there is also the possibility of being injured by one of natures the top predators. Due to the stress of being caged and the fact that they do not have an escape mechanism, dolphins have been known to butt and bite swimmers. A few years ago the US authorities suspended "swim with programs" because of concern to the health of dolphins and the injuries sustained by swimmers."
As they say at Dickman's meats in Tucson: "Meat is murder: tasty, tasty murder". The only thing better than Guerro is BK carne asada in South Tucson. This makes me want to go out and buy a extra large Burrito right now!
Have an opinion on food? Keep it to yourself. Invade my space (where I pay rent) with your message uninvited....kicked out. This was lacking all class. It was an invasion of private property and disgraceful - dont want meat? don't eat meat! Pretty simple. I will eat meat, pork, asada, goat, occasional fish - but it is for me not for you. and I dont care what you eat.

What BK's over Canelo's? I do frequent Canelos on Oracle but don't do BK's on first ave. When I used to go to the south side I would hit up BK's over Guerro but its been a while.

I saw that the dolphin park in guaymas only has Lobos (sea lions) or seals performing now, wonder what they did with the performing dolphins.

Bk's on first is sort of dirty....I try to eat locally sourced meats....I want my chicken to see the sunset,my cow to spend a few years on the range......then I murder and eat them.......still this girl made me think about it....
I love meat. These days I eat less and less pork, more fish and chicken. When I want red meat it's not usually a steak. I like cheaper cuts used in mexican food or just good old fashion roast.
I think about methods of production and it sucks. But food in general is getting so expensive that the "how" becomes an after thought if a thought at all. I need to feed my family and we try to not waste as much as possible and cook what we buy well.
But this got me thinking about how things were when I was a child. My family would get a calf, raise it with a name and then slaughter the poor thing. One day moo cow was there and the next we were having a huge BBQ. I don't know whats worse, thinking about how we get what we eat or giving it a name then chopping it up and eating it...
But this is kind of relative to the original subject of progress, progress for the sake of progress isn't always good. Raising anything in mass just creates issues. Antibiotics and so on.
I just looked up Meats on cruise lines and there was a story about how Carnival got rid of the porterhouse in the steakhouse on the ships. But what people are upset about is they can't get a 24 ounce chunk of dead cow now! WTF, who the hell needs to eat 1.5lbs of any meat in one sitting and be upset about it?
To much of anything is a bad thing I suppose, just eat more sensibly and don't take what you eat for granted. Maybe that cow, pig, chicken etc. lives will mean more if it isn't just for the sake of gluttony...?
Inability to maintain the necessary infastructure is a worry for the Homeport...case in point the airport today......
Also the situation with roving criminals in Sonoyta has heated up again...school has been canceled by the mayor...

Oh duh re read. Okie dokie. Still sucks. I hope things are looking a lil better in April.
The whole world going crazy yo!
If you can translate this, there were no shots fired or anyone killed in Sonoyta this past week, schools were not closed either.
Your pretending this was nothing but it shook the major who is in the game....,
This is what the mayor said, you provided the info, you must of deciphered it wrong, I mean your hearsay don't count. JMHO.
The Mayor, Julio Cesar Ramirez indicated that there were no reported clashes, injuries or deaths, only reports of explosions, so the existence of the newsletter.
Meanwhile, the state Attorney Carlos Navarro Sugich declare that Sonoyta is calm, so has issued a warrant to the Mayor of Sonoyta to rescind the suspension of classes.
To do this, a letter was performed with four important points about the situation that exists in Sonoyta:
- There is no report of fighting, wounded or killed in Sonoyta, this research bases to the Army, Federal Police, Attorney General of the State and the City Council.
- Recognize that if there was a document issued by the municipal authority where it is recommended to suspend classes.
Mexican Consul General Roberto Rodrigues confirmed shots were fired on Wednesday and schools closed for a few hours.
“It was something isolated. There was some kind of shooting and the authorities immediately took the appropriate measures in order to control the situation,” said the Consul General.
The State Dep
We were in Sonoyta on Wednesday between 2 and 3PM, seemed pretty normal to us.
Didn't see any extra police or Marines patrolling. The taco stand by Vasquez's store was tasty and busy.
Only shooting we witnessed were police shooting radar at the southern end of town ;)
We also saw another police truck stopped at the Modelorama near the border, getting beer for the night
from all the phony tickets they collected on that day.:)
My friend that works at a funeral home in one of the effected cities thinks business is looking up...... From a Sonoyta report "
Although state officials say there have been no shootings in Sonoyta, versions of the inhabitants collide with the official discourse, as some claim to be witnesses of violent acts.
"No violent acts?" Said Lourdes, a resident of Sonoyta, "but we saw two blocks in front of my house, two trucks down the hill at full speed and before we hear gunfire and the soldiers follow".
"And the bullets and trucks speeding?" Questioned another neighbor of this border town.
"I know, I witnessed yesterday of how a group of three cars closed the highway to Caborca, with chickens that are next to the Red Cross. And many armed and hooded men got running and shooting of right now also I composed ".
Kary, another resident also claimed why say that nothing happens in this population, when families are at risk.
I think it is a well established fact that the official reports of violence, from everywhere in Mexico are incomplete and inaccurate.
Talk to the ordinary local people and you will find that seldom are police reports made and seldom is their presence requested. US folk will insist on calling the police, locals only when necessary. Lots and lots of stuff happens and is unreported. Lots of stuff is misreported. A bullet ridden body laying int he street does not necessarily mean murder, could have been suicide !! Most believe the officials will do nothing so why waste time. Also the police can get predatory toward the victims, another reason to not report.
Check out the recent episode where a man was abducted for ransom by two of Penasco's finest after he phoned for help. I had an occasion where I was being threatened with violence by an irate intoxicated gent across the counter. I phoned the magic number 066, got no answer after 20 or so rings. Called back, same deal. Called a third time and the person answering spoke not a word of english and hung up in frustration after my inadequate Spanish was not understood.
Reliable reports of summary justice dispensed by law enforcement abound in Mexico. If they believe it is cartel against cartel they feel it appropriate and OK to just ignore it and it goes unreported or to solve the case with a gun. Dead people tell no tales ya know. A murder is a murder irrespective of who the parties involved are.
Then there is the post crime justice system to deal with. Years back as a believer in justice I went to the station house to file a simple burgulary report. Long lines and unresponsive staff. It's annoying to say the least to wait for hours in line all the while hearing laughter from a nearby office and seeing people come and go, carefully ignoring the line of people waiting for service. After 4 visits over several days I gave up. Come back after 6, come back in the morning, tomorrow, etc. and my then live-in's Tia worked there. It's no joke.
Last year, right at the spot where donations are solicited on the edge of town, I was stopped waiting my turn when vehicles pulled up along the side of the highway, 4 gents in civvie clothes with automatic weapons got out and deployed on both sides of the road, crouching down and peering down the highway where a line of vehicles aproached from the south at a high rate of speed. No warnings offered to those of us on the highway. The line of approaching vehicles turned and sped west down a dirt road. The armed guys jumped into their trucks and followed the other vehicles. No shots were fired but I was looking around for the film crew !!That is the kind of thing that does not tend to get reported by the Government but maybe through social media. "
Sonoyta is an important plaza mostly because of the area to the east. The T.O. Res. in AZ is a transhipping point with support from the locals. I think the crossing at Lukeville is given some throw-aways just to distract from the real action. That highway corridor up to Why draws a crap load of staff and vehicles. Easier duty than on an atv in the outback too.
Social media has been a game changer for many. People learn who is accurate and honest in reporting through experience over a time period.
People cross every day by the thousands. Just travel in the daytime, mind your own business and don't even think about guns or drugs and you should be just fine. If there should be trouble in some specific area, you will learn about it or only be delayed briefly. The stories you hear are about the cartels fighting each other, occasional police or politicians and hardly ever innocent civilians. Tourists are not involved if they keep their noses clean and their eyes open.

A bit more to worry about if you linger in Sonoyta these days like the recently deported stuck there.....really watch them in grocery story parking lots....

I agree completely with what you sayDog !! I forgot a line on the description of that Sonoyta episode " That is the kind of thing that does not tend to get reported by the Government but maybe through social media. "
Having been in many "Ports" ... they are always in the "nasty" part of town. Across town, away from public areas, etc,
Think of oil slick, servicing the ship, cleaning both human and service waste.
As one would say, you do not eat in a bathroom, regardless how fact decorated it is. Not sure whose Idea was to start this project in the same location as the Número Uno beach?
Rocky Points namesake beach.
One word,
"Let's see - Puerto Penasco has world class golf, fantastic fishing, either from shore or on one of the many boats available for hire. It has some of the best cantinas available, we do a lot of desert riding and exploration, we do almost anything you can think of as far as water sports. If you need Sams club and Walmart, it has both of those. The food is spectacular. "Mexico Proper" that is sort of a perspective thing I think, there are many Mexicans that call Puerto Penasco their home and many more Mexicans moving in from other parts of Mexico as well as folks moving back to Mexico from the USA. I believe it is Mexico proper. There are 400 RV spots on or near the beach, thousands of luxo condos available. Yes we live near the beach and the desert so there is a fair amount of dirt here, but calling the town dirty is simply a slam and an opinion. I enjoy my life here it has all I need and more. When you talk down about where I live it is like insulting my mistress. By the way it took me 3 tanks of gas to cross Texas, that seemed improper to me.
On edit, My wife and I love Kino bay too! We get there in about 4 hours from Penasco. "
What's the point Hillbearto? I agree with what was said. I wouldn't be visiting Penasco if I didn't love it. We also stop for tacos in Sonoyta - we've met some truly dear Mexicans who we count as our friends.

Things I learned from this link....
Russ has a mistress in Texas?
Russ fights with other people on the internet
Russ has never been on a stinking last generation cruise ship but loves them
Russ keeps hustling for customers on line and they keep deleting his posts
Russ tells a guy that questions him that he is not part of the hospitality or real estate hustler community in RP!!!!! Really!!!!!
What's the point Hillbearto? I agree with what was said. I wouldn't be visiting Penasco if I didn't love it. We also stop for tacos in Sonoyta - we've met some truly dear Mexicans who we count as our friends.
Some of Miramars best friends are Mexican. her foothills mansions maid, her weed dealer...Hector the pool boy for example
Hey just kidding but let's join the real world....RP is a close to Arizona getaway at the beach...nothing fancy but it in no way is really Mexico...

"Not sure whose Idea was to start this project in the same location as the Número Uno beach?"
I was answering the question with out mentioning any names, simple.
The other links were exactly as stated.
As far as the violence and so on I agree, play safe, pay attention, be smart and your visit should go as planned. Though, reality could change that at any given moment. I have never experienced any crap on any visit and state it as such. But I am not going to go in blindly thinking that bad shit can't go down, nor should anyone one that is thinking of visiting.
That's why I continue to promote Puerto Peñasco to damn near everyone I talk to including Mexican nationals that have lived here for years and are scared to death about visiting!
As usual, when someone posts something that could be used as a heads up to potential visitors to PP or Mexico, it gets branded as if that person is trying to keep people from visiting. I don't see it that way.... o_O To me it's more like "Heads up".
Then the whole thing turns into a battle of sides. One side presents maybe less than Rosie information (and links to said information when requested) and the other side presents Opinions and ignores or disregards the information being presented.
I don't think anything presented here has caused anyone to decide not to come down and take food of of anyones table. And I guarantee that when a charter bus load of college girls head south on Spring Break that regardless of anything said here, their parents warn them and tell them to be careful!
There is one other factor in all of this too, Shit happens.
I guess I know where Jerry stands on ....me, funny, he doesn't know me - has never met me, yet he knows more about me than others here on the forum that indeed do know me.

Jerry, you should have seen her a the Tequila Fest a couple years ago, she had made such good friends with Fabiola and Melissa's husband (also Mexican) that she had them bringing her drinks, food and making song requests to the Mariachis all night long...and was tipping them like a millionaire...'
I guess I know where Jerry stands on ....me, funny, he doesn't know me - has never met me, yet he knows more about me than others here on the forum that indeed do know me.
Jerry used to work for the CIA. He knows lots of stuff about lots of stuff. But those CIA LSD tests in the 60's scrambled a few eggs upstairs and he sometimes has difficulty making normal neural connections. Don't sweat it, Russ. He still thinks I worked for Richard Nixon and Dick Cheney. ;)
I understand Stuart but he is allowed to turn this into a negative fest without adding any helpful information. He obviously has enormous amounts of time to scour the web for un-helpful negative info about a place he doesn't even live or care for. I really thought this forum was about Rocky Point - not the hills 20 miles east of Sonoyta. I will watch for a while then decide if this forum is right for me. I don't think the personal attacks on me or miramar should be allowed. My opinion.
Sorry Russ but if you think I came up with all these inconvenient facts on my own time you are mistaken.People that think the HOMEPORT is a mistake pass many parts of the story on to me.In other cases they beg me to shut up because they may never be able to sell their condos if the homeport becomes the disaster I believe it just may become.( I tell them no one reads this stuff anyways unless they already have made up their minds...plenty of fish in the sea)
, I just noticed you told the guy on the RV forum you were not part of the real estate/ hospitality community. His point was you really can't get the lay of the land from a guy trying to sell land. The fact is you have been a spokesman for RP in Yuma and Vegas.....no big deal but why not admit it.....
Sorry Mirramar, picking on you is unfair ,you were just sticking up for your boy.
Russ Love your info but you only give the side of the Angels.....more of a devil man myself. For instance you gave people tips on a whale trip in Baja and I tell them stuff like this "

Stewart I was actually in a paid Scopalimine test in 72.... Two weeks of twilight sleep to kick a made up heroin habit ...they used mescaline as a chaser......miss those days or was it weeks.
Russ.... Jerry.... kiss and make up. Miramar, you don't have to kiss Jerry. Just kiss the pool boy instead.
Jerry? Try not to bash our family members so hard with personal stuff, okay? I don't care if you want to argue opinion all day long until you have a mescaline flashback, but leave people's personal lives out of it, okay? Thanks!

The draft thousand 400 million pesos, which could trigger an economic impact of 12 million dollars a month in this population the Sea of Cortez, you must wait at least for the second half of 2016.
Javier Tapia Camou, Sonora tourism commissioner, said there was a change of materials in the project recently resumed, and although no shipping involved, must first ascertain the progress.
"We had to modify the project for reasons of nature, because the stone was considered to be had, it was not so, they had to make adjustments and details of the project. They have to do with concrete pipes, already are building concrete pipe "revealed Tapia Camou.
Besides the change of materials, the differences between transport unions charge of moving the materials, who conducted strikes in 2013 and 2014, delayed the work.
The work, which began in January 2013 in the Sandy Beach area of Puerto Peñasco, consists of a breakwater, a platform for building a cruise ship dock, an avenue of access and a pedestrian boardwalk to beach reclaimed sea.
Tapia Camou explained that after the changes in the project, in early March, the works focused on the jetty, but soon begin construction of the pier.
To do this, on the beach are to be emptied into molds 150 cubic concrete blocks a ton to form cubes 8000 10 tons requiring the dock.
"I hope that next year could be, but it will depend very much also that resources are not cut out for this project that is so important to the northwest of the country, it is not just for Sonora" he said.
Between 2013 and 2014 490 million dollars contributed by the Federation for the project were implemented, while 300 million pesos are expected to conclude in 2016 with about 600 million in 2015.
Despite the delay, shipping companies that have docked in Sonora are interested in making Puerto Peñasco their point of departure and return, as Holland America, Princess and Azamara

This is big and before more booster poo gets flung my way keep in mind this statement is from the Sonoran head of tourism who sees the writing on the wall.
Back to the point of this thread that seems to be upsetting all the usual suspects.....the friggin head of Sonora tourism is afraid the Feds will bail in the next year if local crooks, the lowest bid construction group and the mormon Fixers/ union crews take to much of of the fed money without showing big time results.Govenor Padres is going to be facing criminal charges to spice things up some more. The homeport money from Mexico City hangs by a thread.

I suggest it's less than smart or wise to throw around libel or slander of any leader, much less the Governor of a powerful state in a foreign country. I'd say he might just have sufficient power to deal harshly with a foreigner who has something to lose in Mexico and who vehemently opposes a state project like the Homeport. A Tucson lawyer friend says truth is not a defence in Mexico. I've already heard about this from local Mexicans. I recommend a retraction and apology be published inmediatamente. We don't need one of our own in trouble.
Threatened by a gringo....if you read the news you might have heard about the dam. Right? http://m.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11398187. Report from Hermosillo is this is just the begining of his problems....he has pissed the federal officials off so much they will use any means available to sink him and his Homeport

Anyways after this and a threat from A realtor type to have me killed I think I will stop here. The fact the the Sonoran Tourism officials are worried the funding may be pulled is good news to the many American real estate owners whose quality of life in Rocky Point will be damaged by this garbage collecting nightmare..,sooner the better is our best hope
Hill you can take a Diamond & turn it into a turd in no time flat. Nothing sad or funny about 12 million monthly being spread around the region. A large % of PP residents have relatives living in the region so the $ being spread around on a continuous basis over a long term will be positive. However many direct jobs are created will be a nice boost for those individuals & their families. Wealthy Mexican Nationals that never visited the Sea if Cortez will take a cruise & many will return to PP for future vacations with their families friends bringing more positive financial impact to PP. All in all the young generation of kids living in PP will grow up in a much better city offering greater economic opportunity for their futures due to the new Home Port. That is a fact & the MX Fed Gov. Plan. It's called "vision ".
Well, I hope that how it turns out, I am just a bit more pessimistic than that.
I actually have never said anything but that. If its going to happen I hope it helps the native, poor, have not but a shack held together with rope residents of PP. You know the ones that you probably have never seen....
By the way, how about a link to the documentation that guarantees this. And the projections based on your guarantee. Seeing how this kind of venture has never failed before. I can't believe I have been so blind as to the overwhelming success awaiting the peoples of PP.
Not sure what being a conservative has to do with the Home Port, Heelbearto. No vomiting necessary- let's stick with the facts and keep politics (Conservative) and Religion (Mormonism) out of the conversation. That belongs in Rants and Raves (which I don't go to) and is no way to debate!

Sticking to facts, well that doesn't always work now does it? ;)
