Baby Pelicans

I love watching the pelicans - the way they fly in formation, so close to the water - watching them fish, etc., Why don't we ever see any baby pelicans? They're always full grown.

I've always felt that in the fall (as right now) , that after pelicans dive for the anchovies (or what ever those black pools of fish are) you see the babies follow them hoping for a tid bit of fish. Every time hi-winds occur they love to ride the free
air lift that it provides. Up and down the beach back and forth, I call it recreational flying. I've always assumed that the skimming just above the water gives them a helping lift from the compressed air under their wings.

always a pleasure to watch them.

I agree watching pelican behavior is entertaining. You might enjoy this older post we were developing.

Just read the whole thread. So interesting. I could watch them all day. But I hate when I see the lone one on the beach because I know what it means.

It means they're too old or sick to keep up with the rest and are most likely going to die. I've seen several dead pelicans on the beach over the years. I hate it!!!!
Thanks -- was afraid that was what it meant. But I never necessarily associated the sight of a lone pelican with a sick one.

It's not always the case, but if they hang around the same beach just sitting or walking for hours - sometimes days - then that's what it is. It completely breaks my heart.
