Protesters block Arizona border crossing

About 300 people protesting high electricity prices in northern Mexico are blocking a border crossing into the U.S.

The Yuma Sun newspaper reports that angry motorists fumed as they were prevented from crossing into Mexico at San Luis south of Yuma. Cars headed into the U.S. were backed up and those heading into Mexico were turned around by demonstrators.

Protesters had warned last week that they planned to close the border crossing in an effort to force the Mexican government to lower summertime power rates in the state of Sonora. Protesters say they plan to block the border indefinitely.

They want rates lowered so people can afford to run their air conditioners in the summer.

SAN LUIS, Ariz. – The mayor of this city is asking federal government to authorize expedited crossing lanes at the existing San Luis port of entry to ease long car lines at the border.

Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla said the SENTRI (Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection) lanes would at least be a short-term solution to border congestion in the event the federal government decides not to fund a proposed $85 million expansion of the port of entry that would include additional lanes for traffic entering the United States from Mexico.

Escamilla said that is a real possibility, given that a higher-priority project, the $142 million expansion of the Mariposa port of entry at Nogales, Ariz., may not be included in the federal budget in the upcoming fiscal year. http://www.yumasun.com/news/expedited_42902___article.html/lanes_luis.html

Easy Terry ... If you read a bit more widely you would know the protesters met last Friday in Sonoyta to try to organize an action there.
